Drop loop holsters- Authentic?
« on: July 13, 2006, 12:01:38 PM »
I heard these were not around in the old west, is that true? I intend to get some books on the subject but in the meantime what kinds of holsters and belts are authentic other than mexican and slim jims? Thanks

You don't need 'some books' - as long as you buy a copy of this one:

'Packing Iron - Frontier Gun Leather of the Old West' - by Rattenbury.

Buy that one first.

The 'drop-loop'  - also known as the 'Buscadero Rig' - is a 'Silver Screen Cowboy' affair.

Slim Jims, Mexican Loops, Cheyenne-style, Meanea or Miles City style, Half-Breed - Pouch and more - were all worn during the Frontier era.

Vaya,

The "Buscadero style" it's a hollywood affair but if you take a look at a picture of "Commodore Perry Owens" you'll see an example of "Hystorical" drop loop holster.................

Duelist it's a way of life..........

The "Buscadero style" is different from the Drop loop style.  They both acomplish the same thing lowering the holster.  But do it different.  the buscadero style does it by having a slot that may or not be below the rest of the belt.  The drop loop style does this by extending the belt loop to drop the holster down.  I have seen several drop loops in use but do not care for them much.  Some use them to swap classes between BW & CC and use the same belt.  That have another set of their holster made that either raises or lowers the holster.  I use a different method.  I started out with a single buscadero selt with a cross draw and shortly there after switched to gunfighter so I just made a adapter to lower the new holster mush like I use on a fitting belt for buscadero rigs to place the holster drops in th eright place.
