Never did figure out why there was a US Marshall in Dodge City and why he had his nose in everything not his business, a Deputy Marshall, maybe, but about all he'd have to do with out another commission would be keeping alcohol from entering the Nations to the SE, lot of extra distance to haul it also, Great Bend or Wichita would be a better base.

A U.S. Marshal would be needed for federal crimes, of which there were far fewer then than now. As well, it was political patronage.

On July 1, 1870, Congress created the Department of Justice and gave it supervision over U.S. Marshals and Attorneys. 

1872   U.S. Marshals assisted Internal Revenue agents (who had no arrest powers) in enforcing the whiskey tax laws.
