I have a Uberti 1873 in 44 Special, and I've loaded for it and have figgered something out. When I began chronographing loads I'd shoot hem out of my pistols then out of the rifle and compare the velocity. Most loads were with Unique in velocity from the pistol (4 3/4") to the rifle (20")were around 150 - 200 fps, but with AL2400 and W296/H110 the gains were up near 300 fps as the slower burning powder was optimized in the longer rifle barrel. I wound up achieving over 1400 fps with a 260 gr. SWC in my 20" .44 Special and figured that was good enough.
So, I'd suggest using really slow burning pistol powders. Since the 1873 is also chambered in .357 and .44 Magnum, I didn't worry a whole lot about overloading it with normal pistol loads.
