Why the 1911?
« on: July 09, 2012, 06:26:11 PM »
Here is a 1911 site that I found.  Not specifically Wild Bunch, but a lot of historical material as well as this article;

http://www.sightm1911.com/lib/other/why_the_m1911.htm

My 1911 was manufacured in the first half of 1918 (U.S.Army), and still living up to the nickname "Ol' Loudmouf!"

In WW I, the first contingent of the C.E.F. was armed with 1911s - it was deemed the best gun available.

I don't think that a man with a MK VI .455 Webley, New Service or S&W '17 was under armed by any means, but owning both a Webley and a New Service in .455, I'll take one of my 1911s as a 'go to' every time.

This Colt was manufactured in 1914, saw service on the Western Front in 1915 by a member of the Canadian Contingent and got me 3rd place Traditional at the Montana State Championships earier this month. Name me another 98 year old pistol that can still perform at that age?

NOTE: The picture was taken in Simms Montana, noticed the flag in the background flying in the RV camping area  ;D ;D ;D

I will say this about that...

Original M1911 frames are softer than the WWII-issue frames.

How do I know?

I used a 1917-built Colt - re-built by them in 1926 to M1911A1, served in WWII and Korea, then fitted with a new Colt QAP slide and S&W chrome-lined barrel for Vietnam.

All work was Government-done - and met all standards then in effect, and when I got it, it was in great condition.

During one competition summer, I put 5000 rounds through the weapon, and ovalled-out all of the pin holes...

I applaud shooting the originals - just use common sense and install new springs - and 'maybe' even a recoil spring buffer - and shoot nothing hotter than Service Ball, and leave the 'shoot-fast' stuff to .45's of later vintages.

That's why I got one of the new M1911s that Colt built a few years back.

Good Luck!

I'm not shooting anywhere in the neighbourhood of 5,000 rds in a summer, a tenth of that actually and as mine was bubba'd by some IPSC wannabe a few years back I've had to replaced the barrel, springs and I did install a Wilson "shok-buff". I'm hoping for a few more years use. I'm looking forward to shooting it in a match in 2014, when it is 100 years old.
