If you make a replica, post the deets. I'd consider making one as well.  I bought a nicely made replica cartridge crate for my Martini-Henry, and it's made a wonderful accent to my "Martini Corner."

Ok here are my efforts to date.

Pics 1 & 2 - Ammo crate.  16.5in by 12in by 9in.  All hand sawn and plained.  This is my fifth box - the first three were experiments that now hold most my reloading odds and ends.  4&5 will be my Spencer and Henry crates.  I'm still looking for good stencils.  Once I had the hang of it and had patterns it took me about 1.5 hours per box, not counting glue time.

Pics 3 to 6 - Spencer two rifle shipping crate.  Again hand sawn & plained, looking for stencils as well.  This one is not based on a design but my take of a couple of rifle shipping boxes I've seen.  I'm thinking of stenciling it something  like Spencer prototypes AoC c/o Col. J Wilder - or something like that.

I'm looking for suggestions on finishing - I want it clear so I was thinking linseed oil or some such, but please if someone out there has a better idea please let me know.

Stencil suggestions would also be appreciated.

pvt Greg,

Nice work on the crates . . . but maybe too new looking.  If I were going to make a Spencer Rifle box I would use distressed wood and if the lettering looked a bit faded that's OK and part of the image I'd be trying to show.  But, you do terrific work just the same.  BTW, my Spencer Rifle ALSO has a distressed look about her ::) ::)

Just adding another link on shipping cases, maybe not posted before in this thread!

US Army Ordinance requirements were that 20 arms were to be packed per crate with their appendages.
No less than 500 arms would received at one time per month. All of this would have been laid out at the time the contract was signed.

This illustration is copied from the 1863 Confederate Manual, which was copied from the 1860 US manual.
I hope this info helps?

I've made a couple ammo boxes for reenacting using the example I found here: http://www.charliesboatworks.com/

Great boxes and decent prices, mine are not dovetailed or exactly the same dimensions, but fairly close.  Mine have the following outside measurements:

20.75" long
11.25" wide
10.00" Height

The lid has a template to hold either rounds rolled for a Sharps or holds Spencer rounds.  Plenty of room in the box for all your rolling/filling needs.  I made the paper boxes from hanging file folders, and they hold 42 rounds of either the blanks from Veteran's Arms or the shotgun rounds.  If anyone wants a more indepth description of the box construction, let me know.

PvtGreg & Big Goose,

You both have done very nice work on these Crates/Boxes.

Both Winchester and Spencer sold large numbers of arms on the commercial/private market. These arms would have been crated in the proper numbers to meet those sales. So, please do not misunderstand my posting regarding the Army Ord. Depot. requirements on crating and shipping of contracted firearms. Army contract were often let for thousands of firearms.

Basic paint called for "olive color" for most Military equipment.
Pigments for this were Lamp Black, Yellow Ocher, White Lead or sugar of lead (lead oxide), Boiled Linseed Oil and Turpentine. Vary any one these pigments much, and you can come up with a wide range of  shades of the color "olive".
I hope this information helps.

Blair - no offense taken at all!

I was just doing something that looks period for camp reasons etc.  A crate would be better than steal gun case!

Hi Major,

I'm thinking one stencil for the front of the case like this:

2
SPENCER'S
1860
PATENT
RIFLE

and

SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE COMPANY

and

ORD. DEPT AoC

I'll send my address in a personal email.

Many, many thanks
