El Topo
« on: June 24, 2007, 10:06:38 PM »
Does anyone remember a film from around 1970 called "El Topo?" It was a Mexican film by a director with the good old Mexican name of Jodorowsky, and it was a western based on a Zen Buddhist legend and was best appreciated if you'd ingested a number of mind-altering substances. The "hero" was a black-clad gunslinger who murders innumerable people only to become a saint by the end of the picture. It was a filmed head comix. What can I say, it was 1970. I guess you had to be there.

Alejandro Jodorowsky was born in Chile, not Mexico.  He didn't to Mexico until his 30s.  Also, he portrayed El Topo in the movie.

El Topo was released on DVD by Anchor Bay on May 17, 2007 individually and as part of a box set: The Films of Alejandro Jodorowsky
