38/357 loads for rifle
« on: August 09, 2010, 10:17:29 AM »
I am just getting started in Cowboy Competition and having a hard time finding a load for a Rossi 24" 92. I am planing to use the LEE 125gr 358-125-RF or LEE 158gr 358-158-RF bullets. For Powder I have on hand a boat load of TightGroup, but I don't mind the use of other Powders ;).
My Rossi will throw the 38's if I lever too fast and I am going to fix this soon. ::), that is why I'm asking for both 38spl. and 357mag.
Thanks

Howdy 5150, go to page 30 of Hodgdon Basic Reloaders Manual PDF (Cowboy Action Data). Titegroup 3.2gr is a popular load around these parts for 125gr-158gr 38sp. I've used the same load in 357 also, however thier data starts at 3.5 for 158gr. Good Luck.

Thanks for your info. I have loaded up about 200rds of the 125's and the same for the 158's. I was going to run them over my crono. but I left the stand behind. Thank God that some things are permantly attached ;D. Both were accurate enough hovering around 1 to 1 1\4 inch at 50 yards.
The 38's shoot SOFT stoked with 3.2grs, other than the bang and the hole in the paper I really did not feel a thing.
The thing is with the 357 it was soft, but according to the Hodgdon's latest book( the 2010 Annual), the start load for the 158's is 4.5grs. Now according to them thats pushing that little bugger around 1028 out of a 10" barrel. I'm not sure if that would be too fast for CAS out of my Rossi 24" Octagone barrel. :-\.
Also thanks for the info in the website ;D.

Most fellers around here use, and love, Titegroup for action competition.  That's because it is not position sensitive, not temperature sensitive, and goes bang the same way every time.

I ran a Rossi '92 for a while.

I shoot a tuned Rossi '92 that only feeds .357's.  My CAS load is a .125-grain lfn over 3.2 grains of Reddot and Winny primers.  This is a heavier load than some like but knockdowns are knocked down and the loads are consistent.  If I do my job, I can double-tap 10 rounds on five targets in under 6 seconds.  I am not sure that a lighter load would make me faster than that with the '92, but I regularly shoot with guys and gals faster than me.
