Marshal;  I found the book;

FIREARMS,TRAPS, & TOOLS OF THE MOUNTAIN MEN, Carl P. Russell, 1967, Knopf & U of New Mexico Press  ISBN 0-8263-0465-6

Mine is a trade paperback, and I'll break the spine if I open it to photocopy. Luckily, the item in question is on the cover.  I'll scan it and send a PM or email.

It is the personnal Kentucky model hatchet of General Samuel Hopkins dating from the late 18th Century.  It is, or was, owned by the Audubon Museum, Henderson Kentucky. It is discussed at page 264.

By all means, don't open that book too far. I value my books and it just isn't worth it. The cover pic is fine. To post it here or pm it will work good. If you would rather email, let me know and I can pm that to you. I appreciate the book title, too. I'll keep an eye open for it at the next gunshow. Thanks.

Those are really great pics, Sir Charles. I like the way that sheath was made. It really looks like it would be a fine addition to the right outfit. Thanks for posting them. I see I need to round up a copy of the book, too.

On close inspection, it looks like the sheath was sewn with a stitch line that fits the tomahawk a little more closely than the overall shape of the piece. Nice design.

If I were reproducing this 'hawk carrier, I wouldn't rely on just stitching to hold the hatchet.  I'd insert welts, and maybe some sheet copper to protect the leather AND the owner.

I'm like you,,I always lookin for a way to not spend a fortune on that kinda stuff..use the 'good money' on guns and bullets !

Crazy Crow has excellent throwing 'hawks for $22.00.  IMHO, that doesn't qualify as a "fortune"...

Here is my "3J" hawk in a belt case that I made.

The best way that I have found to make your own hawk is by buying a cheap ballpeen hammer. You can find these Real cheap and a lot of times in big sets on ebay.  They can be heated and flattened to make a nice hawk. Even if you don't have a forge a wood fire and an anvil will have you throwing a new hawk in no time.
