How about shifting this to THE CUTTING EDGE.

I have a Hawken Shop throwing tomahawk.  Not sure he's around anymore.  Lots of sources for 'hawks though.  Track of the Wolf, Dixie Gunworks, or any buckskinning supply business.  I cheapened out, and make my throwers out of garage sale hatchets.  modify the blade to look like a "hawk, and trim a piece of broken axe handle to make a straight handle.

Sir Charles...some of them garage sale/yard sale hatches...the ones with better steel,,,make a good first form for a bladesmith to beat out a real work of art tomahawk or belt axe.
I'm like you,,I always lookin for a way to not spend a fortune on that kinda stuff..use the 'good money' on guns and bullets !

I made this one a few years back,  it was drawn from a throwing hawk a friend had,  I made several with a hole for a wooden handle and made this one with a steel handle to use around camp.  I thought I had one with wooden handle, but I must have gotten rid of all of them.

It's 5 inches across the blade from tip to tip and 5 1/2 inches from top to bottom,
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

I have a throwing hawk that I bought I'll bet 20 years ago from www.trackofthewolf.com.  Hasn't failed me yet.  Their catalog is very detailed - or you can call them.  Very knowledgeable folks, who have been in business for many years.

Thanks Pards ever much! :)
Ozark Tracker, If I get you right, on the end of the blade it is 5" tall if you were holding it strait up and down, and 5" from the middle of the blade to the handle. If that is true, i can add a little, and make it so a 2" around handle could fit threw.
I am great full to all of you!

Ace, that would work, just heat it and loop it.   it'll may take a little more than 2 inches but your on the right track.

Original trade hawks were made by wrapping a piece of iron around a mandrel to form the eye.  Then a smaller piece of steel was placed between the front part of the iron and it was forge welded together.  Steel was expensive and used sparingly.  On some felling axes, a steel cap was welded on the poll so it might be used as a hammer as well.

Thanks for the advice Bob, I think I might not of worded or what ever. ::) I am not going to go into the axe making buiness.
Remember, when I made a hacket cover for Curley, and I made it way to small  ??? I took it over to the gun show here a few weeks ago, and if I would of had the right size and shapes, with everyone being different, I could of sold at least 10, I had a lot of lookers, and they would tell me, i wished it was larger i would buy it. I just would like to have some stuff made up for the next time I might go set up!
thanks for all the help!

Ace;  There is a quick way to weld up a thrower.  Get a two to three inch piece of steel pipe of the proper diameter for your intended handle.  You might form it to an egg shape.  Then weld a blade to this ferule you formed from the pipe.  Not the historically correct procedure, but for something you are willing to throw away - frequently, it'll do.

If you want to make an historically correct tomahawk sheath, I saw a good one in a book of buckskinning stuff.  It was carried by a USA General in the war of 1812.  Two "D" shaped pieces of leather about 7-8 inches across, and about 6 inches deep.  Rivet in between the two large pieces, thick leather fillets the shape of the 'hawk.  Sew the points of the "D" together with a shoulder strap between the points.  Finally, punch holes every 1/2 inch or so around the circumference except where the handle comes down, and use long leather thongs looped in each pair of holes, and knotted with the ends of the thongs hanging down to form a long fringe.

Marshal Wingham;  If I don't have the book, my brother might.  I could sketch it, but will look around first.
