1849 pocket six shot.

Last Saturday I purchased a 4 inch barrel 1849 Colt - I didnt look at it too closely after all I went tot he auction to buy it and buy it I was going to do. I assumed it was a five shot as the catalogue description never said otherwise!

When I got home it turned out to be a six shot.

Can anyone tell me how scarce the six shot 1849s are - for example the ration of six shots to five shots as I have seen the six shot as being described as 'rare' which I dont believe and 'scarce' which I could believe...any information greatly appreciated.

I've seen and owned lots of both.  Neither is particularly scarcer than the other.  The five shots were exclusive up to 1861, after that most were six shots.  About equal numbers of both.  Very nice gun.  Looks like it has a considerable amount of original blue.

Barrel maybe 80% and certainly 70% with 50% colour case hardening to frame 10% plating to brass so yes it is a better than average one for New Zealand where firearms saw a lot of use. Its the best I have seen or owned.
