True West Magazine's 2010 Best of the West.

READERS’ CHOICE: Frontier Knives by Chuck Burrows (Wild Rose Trading Co.) • Durango, CO • www.wrtcleather.com

The Bowie you made for me, using one of Gib's forged blades always draws favorable comments.

For those who haven't seen it - the blade's hand-forged by Gib Guignard, the hilt is the beam of an Elk antler and the hilt and buttcap are from a wagon rim found near the site of the Fetterman Massacre.

The sheath's beaded in the Crow style.

Take a look.

Congratulations Chuck!!! Thats a fine looking rig St. George.
I have a dagger and sheath made by Chuck. The blade was
also made by Gib Guignard. It's a heck of a rig.

Well, show them off, sometime...

After we'd talked about the blade style - Chuck took it from there and kept me in the loop with photos as it came together.

Once it finally got to me - it fit my hand like an old friend - and the sheath was absolutely amazing, since all I knew about were the Buffalo hair and cones, and the rest was a surprise.

Thanks guys! as I noted this one came completely out of left field and the fact it was the readers voted me in was real nice!

Glad you both like your knives and sheaths, while not direct copies of any one piece they were based on various aspects of several originals.

Here's Steve's set which was based on the Southwest dagger pictured in the Fur Trade Cutlery Sketchbook....

The fittings are iron guard, buttcap and pin with poured pewter ferrules. The grip is mesquite - a typical dagger SW style of the 1830-1890 period. The sheath is rawhide over bark tan with So Cheyenne style bead work on the brain tan cuff......

Congrats Chuck !

Certainly a fitting and deserved honor !

As you mentioned the fact that it was a "peoples choice"  award  is really cool.  No Executive Politics involved just the true voice of regular folks.

Take care-  Josh

Chuck's skill and knowledge are legendary.

But I would address his kindness ...

I have a fixed income that sometimes waxes but most of the time wanes ...

I had given up ever affording a knife by Chuck Burrows when he offered (talk about nobless oblige) to take a standard Indian (as in the country India) good quality Wootz/Damscus Bowie and work his magic with it ...

The results are below .... and in the little pic is the original catalog pic of the same knife and sheath ...

Now, that is a large dose of skill and knowledge with a heart as big as the moon thrown in!

Thank you Chuck!!

Marshall,

It's all about the passion and compassion ... a person can be the most wonderful 'smith or knifemaker, or leathermaker, but where there is no heart it twill all be smoke and whistles ... and with that same passion it raises both the man and his work ... like between the project and the man and his mind is an angel turning his hands in just the right way, making both the man and his product a little more that it could be by themselves ...

IMHO, but I believe it to be true ...
