BP .44 colt mv
« on: October 01, 2013, 07:04:50 PM »
Does anyone have data on the muzzle velocity from a 24 inch barrel for  .44 colt loads? Loads should be 25-28g BP 200g lead.

thanks

Griswold,
A couple of years ago I dissected some original Henry cartridges and tested the powder charges in my Marlin Cowboy .44-40.
Bullets were deep seated to = the same compression found in the original Henry Cartridges.

UMC cataloged their 200 gr. .44 Henry Cartridge with 26 grs. of b.p.
Winchester catalogs showed 28 grs. with a 200 gr. bullet.

Using 200 gr. cast bullets....
two 26 gr. charges from UMC cartridges produced 1,042 f.p.s. average
one 28 gr. charge from a Winchester cartridge produced 1,133 f.p.s. (very  close to the 1,125 claimed f.p.s.)

By comparison,
26 / KIK FFFG = 1,092
28 / KIK FFFG = 1,127
28 / Goex FFFG = 1,124
28  / Schuetzen FFFG = 1,115 (older lot)
28 / Swiss FFG = 1,148
