Which spare parts for win 1897?
« on: October 26, 2015, 03:12:23 PM »
I have an old win 1897 shotgun from 1909 and I am going to use it for cas.  Which spare parts should I bring when travelling around the country shooting  matches?  I don't want to ruin myself buying all sorts of parts, just want the crucial parts that could ruin a great day..

Howdy McCrower.  Go here:
http://marauder.homestead.com/files/97parts.htm
It is a parts diagram to the '97 and the parts list is marked as to what parts fail the most often.

Plus more tune-up hints, etc. see this page:

This is not meant to be a smart aleck reply.  If you are going to be travelling around the country, I would seriously consider buying a spare 97.  I have a spare.  I've had to break it out a few times.  Seems like when these things break, it has to go into the shop.  I've yet to have the repair be something that could be done in the field.

About the only part you can really change at a match, in reasonable time, is the Ejector Spring that sticks thru the side plate.  The answer
suggesting a spare shotgun is spot on.  I shot a '97 at one time (not cowboy, gave it up) and all I took with me, besides the spare '97 was the Ejector Spring.

Thank you guys for replies. A spare 97 is out of the question, I paid 1100 dollars for my Winchester 97 from 1909 in Norway where I live. So I better stock up with spare parts for the one I have.  ;)

Left hand extractor.  The originals are a one piece extractor/leaf spring and do fail.
