Any interest in 351 Winchester lead bullets?
« on: January 21, 2016, 06:47:11 PM »
I've got a friend who makes bullets and he was asking me if there would be much interest in a correct style lead bullet with hytec coat for the 351 Winchester? I'm interested of course but I didn't know if anyone else would be interested. What say ye? Dusty Boddams

That would be about 180 grains hard lead with hy tec brand coating. Dusty

I've never had any luck with 180Gr. lead bullets.  Copper washed bullets work so the hi tec coating may just help.  I would like to try some of those as well.

The other thing I had been thinking is that a slow burning powder with a little heavier bullet might make it easier to get the rifle to function properly at the maximum 1400 fps that Zoot Shooting requires.  Would it be possible to take a heavier (200Gr. or more) over size bullet, say a .357 and size it back down to .351?

Bat , sure it's possible but he way the factory 351 bullet is made with most of it exposed outside the case when you try and use a regular  bullet the grease groove is well north of the case mouth. With jacketed I tried some swaged down to 351. I could not get the gun to run with heavily reduced loads. Of course you are on a possible track using a heavier bullet to build more pressure. Another thing would be to modify the rifle by spring or "gasp" :o modify the inertia block which would maybe  make it only usable with the lite load. I toy with my 351 because it seems like it would be fun in competition  but instant gratification is my Thompson or Suomi ( both semi's) and I've actually used both these in some area combat matches. One more thought with our BAMM (bolt action military match) games that we shoot monthly after wild bunch we have AR 500 targets and those things are really tough if a club had those for rifle targets velocity wouldn't be an issue if the club wanted to wave the 1400 fps on a local level. Draw back would be of course money but if the targets are bought off eBay as a 2/3 ispca/ IDPA  type target ar500 buying the plate only and building the base with local talent they are affordable.
