Hunters HD Gold Brings Live Coverage to the SASS Triple Classic

Cowboy Action Shooting is made for spectators, but unless you’re standing on the range, getting a real feel for a major match has traditionally been difficult. Brian Conley ( SASS alias: Light Bender ) and the crew at Hunters HD Gold are working to change that.

Brian Conley aka Light Bender

Conley, founder of Hunters HD Gold, has built a mobile live-production operation designed specifically to take professional streaming coverage directly to shooting events. Built around a dedicated production trailer, the system gives his crew the ability to cover matches from the range and produce a live program rather than simply recording individual stages for later viewing.

The concept isn’t limited to Cowboy Action Shooting. The mobile production setup can be deployed at shooting events ranging from SASS matches to USPSA and IDPA competition, opening some interesting possibilities for bringing shooting sports to viewers who can’t attend in person.

A couple of weekends ago, Hunters HD Gold brought the operation to Indiana for the SASS Triple Classic, putting the
system to work covering the match live.

Below is Hunters HD Gold’s complete live coverage from the final day of the Triple Classic.

Taking the Range to the Audience

Live coverage of a shooting match presents challenges that don’t exist in a traditional sports venue. Competitors move between stages, shooting takes place over a large area, and cameras, communications and production equipment all have to operate safely around an active range.

That’s what makes Conley’s mobile approach particularly interesting. Instead of trying to make a shooting match fit a conventional broadcast model, the production system was built around the realities of covering shooting sports.

For Cowboy Action Shooting in particular, there’s another benefit. Major matches aren’t just about scores. They’re about the stages, firearms, costumes, competitors and the people who make up the Cowboy Action Shooting community. Live production has the potential to show much more of that experience.

The Triple Classic coverage gives us a good look at where that idea is heading.
