William Smith died at his home four miles west of Howard after an illness extending nearly four years.  His death occurred at 11 p.m. Tuesday, November 16.  The deceased was born in Cochocton County, Ohio, July 8, 1838, and was 71 years of age.  He moved to Illinois with his parents when a boy, and while still a young man tendered his services to his country in her hour of need, serving four years and six months in Company F, Fifty-Ninth Illinois Volunteers.  He moved to Elk county, Kansas, in 1883, locating on the farm where he died.
Besides the widow, four children survive him, as follows:  Mrs. Grace Gilmore, of Wichita, Mrs. Ruth Lee, of Arizona, Miss Sadie Smith and Lewis Smith, who lived at home.
The funeral services were held at the home, conducted by Rev. C. E. Creager, and the body was laid to rest in Grace Lawn cemetery.
Mr. Smith was a powerful man physically, and until three years ago, when he was stricken with paralysis was very active.  He owned a fine farm and made money.  About three years ago he was suddenly stricken and since that time has been a helpless invalid.  He was tenderly cared for by his wife and children and though a great sufferer bore his pain without a murmur.
The family are grateful for the many acts of knidness of neighbors and friends and wish to thank all who assisted them.

(Even though there was mention of a wife, her name was never printed in this obit.)
