Carol Elizabeth Pope, age 83, of Eureka, Kansas, passed away January 14, 2020 at the Eureka Nursing Center.  She was born January 28, 1936 in Dupree, South Dakota to Carl and Gerda Johnson.

Carol was raised on the family homestead alongside two siblings.  Her early years of school were attended in a one-room schoolhouse built on skids that would be moved around the area, depending on where the largest concentration of kids were.  She graduated high school with top honors and was her class valedictorian.  After high school, she attended Black Hills State College for one year before meeting her future husband while working at the local grain elevator.

On October 20, 1955, Carol married Leon Pope in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.  They moved to the Eureka, Kansas area in 1977, raising two sons together.  She is remembered as a dedicated wife and mother.  She loved to play cards with her sons, enjoyed taking them fishing, and had conversations with them about real life.  She worked at the Greenwood County Courthouse for many years, retiring as the County Clerk.

Carol is survived by her husband, Leon Pope; her sons, Boyd (Tarah) Pope of Rose Hill, Kansas and Brian (Tallie) Pope of Fall River, Kansas; her grandchildren, Brandon (Melissa) Pope of Wichita, Kansas, Bethany Pope of Nashville, Tennessee, Brooke (Nate) Hughes of Wichita, Kansas, Heath (Jeni) Pope of Severy, Kansas, and Jerrad (Katelyn) Pope of Howard, Kansas; and ten great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Harold Johnson; and her sister, Viola Shrader.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 20, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at the Severy Baptist Church in Severy, Kansas.  Interment will follow in the Janesville Cemetery, Hamilton, Kansas.  Memorial contributions in Carol's name may be made to Harry Hynes Hospice and can be mailed to the funeral home.  Countryside Funeral Home, 206 E.
