The public is invited to attend two free concerts at Severy on Labor Day – Monday, Sept. 6th – at the Severy Senior / Community Center.  The first show will feature the singing group "Red White & Blues," which is made up of three women who love to sing and perform together – Marsha, Polly and Shonna.  Their act follows the talent contest, which starts at 1:00 p.m.
The Red White and Blues started in 1999 singing the national anthem, a capella, at car races and ball games.  They have performed the National Anthem at the Kansas State Fair for the past seven years before performances of entertainers Carrie Underwood, Josh Turner, Sara Evans, Blake Shelton, Gary Allen and Foreigner, to name a few.  That led to the girls performing their own show on stage at the state fair for the last three years.  They have performed with a band at the Winfield Country Roundup and sang the national anthem at KFDI's Listener Appreciation Show.  The group will also be singing the National Anthem at the beginning of Severy's Labor Day Parade this year.
Next month the Red White & Blues will be performing at the State Fair as well as singing the National anthem prior to the Kansas Lottery 150 Race at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City.  The high energy the girls put forth with their performance is very refreshing and entertaining.
At 6:00 p.m. the talent show winners will be performing, followed by Mark Scott.  Mark has been playing music for twenty-six years and plays a variety of music – mostly classic country from the 1950s to the early 1990s.  He played in a family band for over ten years then decided to go solo and has played almost every Saturday night since.  He loves performing and he sings from the heart.  He also takes requests for songs.
Please be sure to attend these two free concerts, sponsored by SKT and Community National Bank & Trust, on Labor Day.  We'd love to see you there.

Just wanted to remind everyone about the big Severy Labor Day Celebration presently going on.  Tonight (Sunday) there will be a Singspiration at the Nazarene Church at 6:00 p.m. with cake and ice cream following.  At 7:00 p.m. a softball co-ed fun game will be held at the Severy Ball Diamond.  Anyone can play in it, and sometimes this event lasts into the wee hours of the morning.  Both of these events are free and everyone is invited.
Tomorrow, (Monday) there will be a breakfast, sponsored by the West Elk FFA from 7:00 - 9:00, with donations being accepted.  Sign-up time for the poker run will be at 9:00 a.m.  At 10:00 the parade will start, with Frank Bills being the Grand Marshal.  The parade will be followed by turtle races, then the hay scramble.  The hay toss event follows those.  Monetary prizes will be awarded to the parade winners, as well as the race winners and the hay toss winners.  Also there will be a car show from 10:00 - 2:00 with prizes awarded.  At 1:00, a talent contest will be held, with prizes, followed by entertainment by the Red White & Blues.  Also at 1:00, free watermelon will be served north of the new Severy Sr. / Community building.  At 2:30 p.m., a lawn tractor pull will be held.   Monday afternoon (after the talent contest) there will be kids foot races and other games, plus there will be a dunking tank, moon walk and other activities going on for the kids.  Arts and Craft Booths and Food Vendors will also be here.  At 6:00 p.m., the amateur talent contest winners will perform, followed by Mark Scott.  A drawing will be held in the evening, as well, with numerous prizes, such as meat bundles, a quilt, a charcoal grill, etc.
Hope to see you here.  If you have company this weekend, these events should entertain and please them.

It was a lot of fun going back to Severy!!!  Jerry had a car very similar to that one when he and Mary got married.  It was fun seeing old class/school mates and renewing friendships.  Sure seems like everyone has changed a lot!!!LOL  Anyway, it brought back lots of memories for Mary and I as the signs on the car were remembering the Booster Trips we made each fall to help advertise the fun that the Labor Day celebration brought.  We had pictures of people who were very active in promoting it back then and we went along and sang.  We all plan to be in Howard for the Elk River Festival that is coming soon!  So, you all come!!!  It's a lot of fun too.

Harky the Clown was a big hit today at Severy.  Harky, who lives in Independence, brought a little helper with him this time and she played tricks on everyone, too.  This is the third year Harky has been in the Severy Labor Day Parade.  Most of the afternoon Harky was busy making animals, etc., out of balloons.  Harky is a really nice man and we enjoy having him.
