Genealogy / Re: Lyman Family Reunion (1962)

Sorry to take so long to respond.  My great-grandmother's maiden name was Lynam.  I don't know of any other Lynams that lived in the area.  Larry

I went looking for a letter that my aunt Mary Ellen Snodderley had sent some years ago.  In it she states that she was babysitting Edith when some men brought Forest Redmond home. He worked for the phone company and had been struck in the side by a pole.  In a short time, Forest died of pneumonia.  About two months later, Bill and Bob were born.

So now I've heard that he died six weeks prior and two months prior.  A book I have shows that he died in September 1929 and the twins were born in November 1929.  I think he might be buried at Grace Lawn.  So his actual date of death would probably be on the tombstone.  larryJ
The Good Old Days / Re: The Andrews Siblings

I would like to impart my fondest memory of Howard and I guess this would be the forum to tell it to.

When I was a small child, my mother, Iva Jane (Andrews) Jordan became very ill.  At that time we were living in Artesia, NM.  I can't remember now why it was just the two of us.  Perhaps both of my brothers had gone on to school or the military.  At any rate, my mom asked me to make a phone call to Howard to get someone to come and stay with us until she was better.  Now, for all you younguns out there, this was before there was a dial telephone system.  To make a call you simply picked up the phone and waited for the real live operator to talk to you.  Then, in order to make a long distance call, you had to ask for the long distance operator.  So this is what I did.  When the long distance operator came on, I told her I wanted to talk to Howard, Kansas.  To which she replied, who did I want to speak to in Howard.  I told her I just wanted to talk to Howard, Kansas.  This went round and round until the operator finally got tired of dealing with a child and just connected me to the operator in Howard, which happened to be my Aunt Bernadine Redmond working the late shift for the phone company and help arrived within two days in the form of my grandmother and one of my aunts.  I have never forgotten that time.  LarryJ

Jo, somewhere I have seen or read that Forest Redmond died of pneumonia six weeks prior to the birth of Bill and Bob Redmond.  The twins were mostly raised by their grandmother, Edith Andrews.  Larry

Just so there won't be confusion in the future, the article incorrectly states, (Lyman family reunion).  It should read Lynam instead.
Thanks for the welcome.   A cousin told me about this site and I find it quite enjoyable.  No, I am not from the Jay family.  My mother was Iva Jane (Andrews) Jordan and my grandmother was Edith Collins Andrews.  I used to spend many summers and holidays in Howard and Moline.  At one time I honestly believed that according to my grandmother I was related to everyone in town.  She used to always mention some sort of family connection whenever someones name came up! I can remember going to the barber shop (Cooleys) to find out about some haying work for the day.  Larry
