We got this request from Barbara Thompson from Denver:

Dear Elk County Forum,

I am hopeful that you may be able to assist me in locating work by an
artist - Arthur W. Hall (1889-1991) who resided in Howard, Kansas
from 1922-1942. Hall was an artist who supported himself and his
wife (also an artist) Norma Bassett Hall, with the sales of their art work
and also his salary from his work as a court reporter for the 13th Judicial District.

I am writing a catalog about Hall which will accompany an exhibition
of his work in 2016 at the Wichita Art Museum.

From old letters and news clippings I know that residents of Howard as
well as others in nearby towns purchased his paintings and prints.  I am
hopeful that some of these prints still remain in family collections and
that their owners might lend them to the exhibition and/or to be photographed
for the catalog. Titles of some of the prints - Fleak Farm, Jontra Farm and
Pond at Severy might be familiar to Elk County residents.

The other pieces of Arthur Hall's history in Howard that I am hoping to
find are: photographs of the home he rented - 194 North Pennsylvania,
possibly the name of the home's owner, and any information that might
confirm which building he rented in downtown Howard for his art studio.

[To every member of this forum~Teresa and I have noticed an increasing number of posts where things are getting a little too personal. This occurs for the most part in the political section and now is occasionally running over into other threads and topics. The whining and sand box fights are happening on both sides of the aisle, and more and more are becoming involved and getting their 2 cents thrown in, in a negative manner. As forum owners, this means we have to spend time being babysitters to a bunch of sand throwing "adults". And frankly, I'm not liking it much. I realize that politics can become personal and very emotional. Heck, I deal with this every day in my job, so I DO understand! I also feel frustrated and emotional many times on issues and the personality's surrounding them. I also realize that some individuals spend most of their social life online either by being themselves or living out a different persona simply for entertainment value, which also includes stirring the pot. Then when the pot starts boiling over, they stand back and cry foul. I also realize that if you clash with a certain person or personality, anything they say can get under your skin. But we ARE adults! Each of us need to filter through all this and sometimes, as hard as it may be, simply ignore the people who get under our skin. There are those that nitpick and jab ..and there are those that continually whine and play victim.. BOTH are detrimental to what this forum was supposed to be about. I built it and gave it to this county to be used for a fun and informative place to share, gather, debate, talk and find out what is happening on a local level and a national level. We have had many people tell us that without this forum, they would never have been properly informed of what is happening in and behind the scene in our community and county. We also have people telling us that it is getting way too serious and cut throat, and the bickering and whining has driven them away. Please.........Regardless of differences on topics, please NO PERSONAL ATTACKS ON A PUBLIC FORUM! Post what you want in the manner you want and debate, argue, disagree...but leave all the slander and personal name calling and the "you said it to me so I'm going to say it back to you" crap out of here. Do not make personal attacks anywhere on our forum. Comment as much as you want on content, but not on the contributor. Personal attacks do not help make a point; they only hurt our community and deter users from reading and posting. I don't like to do this but I will. Derogatory comments about another contributor may be removed by any moderator. What is it about this design that disturbs me?
Not only does that symbol show up on his page it's the ONLY symbol on the DNC's homepage.

Anyone who is an elected official need to remember that they are our representatives to congress,
not the DNC's representatives to us.

He came from the Friday night lights of John Brewer Field to being the kind of football star and sports celebrity he became in Nashville. Now he dies in a Nashville condominium with a 20-year-old woman not his wife, multiple gunshot wounds, one to the head, the young woman dead there next to him.

    The gun was found next to the woman, Sahel Kazemi. Where did the gun come from? Where it always comes from: Somewhere.

    Once I asked one of McNair's high school coaches, a man named Madison Magee, what the next biggest thing was to happen in Mount Olive after Steve McNair and the man said, "Nothin'."

    He bought a big spread for his mother there, a 600-acre ranch, made millions playing pro football, even if he had to quit younger than a lot of other quarterbacks because he was just too beat up, like a fighter who took too many punches. Even after he stopped playing he was a big guy in Nashville. This weekend he was famous again, this time as a crime statistic, homicide victim, dead by gun. ...

    There were so many wonderful statistics attached to McNair's career, the most important being the one Super Bowl, the four Pro Bowls to which he was selected, all the games he won. But the last was the only one that mattered. He is the 36th homicide victim in Nashville this year. That is down from 41 at the same time last year.

    Only in a country of gun lovers is that considered progress.

White House Disputes Criticism That Health Care Town Hall Meeting Is Staged 26173220
WASHINGTON -- Americans who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than $1,000 under a health care overhaul bill unveiled Thursday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Obama's top domestic priority.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated the fines will raise around $36 billion over 10 years. Senate aides said the penalties would be modeled on the approach taken by Massachusetts, which now imposes a fine of about $1,000 a year on individuals who refuse to get coverage. Under the federal legislation, families would pay higher penalties than individuals.

In a revamped health care system envisioned by lawmakers, people would be required to carry health insurance just like motorists must get auto coverage now. The government would provide subsidies for the poor and many middle-class families, but those who still refuse to sign up would face penalties.
Called "shared responsibility payments," the fines would be set at least half the cost of basic medical coverage, according to the legislation.

In 2008, employer-provided coverage averaged $12,680 a year for a family plan, and $4,704 for individual coverage, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation's annual survey. Senate aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said the cost of the federal plan would be lower but declined to provide specifics.

The legislation would exempt certain hardship cases from fines. The fines would be collected through the income tax system.

The new proposals were released as Congress neared the end of a weeklong July 4 break, with lawmakers expected to quickly take up health care legislation when they return to Washington. With deepening divisions along partisan and ideological lines, the complex legislation faces an uncertain future.

Obama wants a bill this year that would provide coverage to the nearly 50 million Americans who lack it and reduce medical costs.

In a statement, Obama welcomed the legislation, saying it "reflects many of the principles I've laid out, such as reforms that will prohibit insurance companies from refusing coverage for people with pre-existing conditions and the concept of insurance exchanges where individuals can find affordable coverage if they lose their jobs, move or get sick."

The Senate Health Education, Labor and Pensions bill also calls for a government-run insurance option to compete with private plans as well as a $750-per-worker annual fee on larger companies that do not offer coverage to employees.

Sens. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., and Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., said in a letter to colleagues that their revised plan would cost dramatically less than an earlier, incomplete proposal, and help show the way toward coverage for 97 percent of all Americans.

In a conference call with reporters, Dodd said the revised bill had brought "historic reform of health care" closer. He said the bill's public option will bring coverage and benefit decisions driven "not by what generates the biggest profits, but by what works best for American families."

The two senators said the Congressional Budget Office put the cost of the proposal at $611.4 billion over 10 years, down from $1 trillion two weeks ago.

However, the total cost of legislation will rise considerably once provisions are added to subsidize health insurance for the poor through Medicaid. Those additions, needed to ensure coverage for nearly all U.S. residents, are being handled by a separate panel, the Senate Finance Committee. Bipartisan talks on the Finance panel aim to hold the overall price tag to $1 trillion.

The Health Committee could complete its portion of the bill as soon as next week, and the presence of a government health insurance option virtually assures a party-line vote.

In the Senate, the Finance Committee version of the bill is unlikely to include a government-run insurance option. Bipartisan negotiations are centered on a proposal for a nonprofit insurance cooperative as a competitor to private companies.

Three committees are collaborating in the House on legislation expected to come to a vote by the end of July. That measure is certain to include a government-run insurance option.

At their heart, all the bills would require insurance companies to sell coverage to any applicant, without charging higher premiums for pre-existing medical conditions. The poor and some middle-class families would qualify for government subsidies to help with the cost of coverage. The government's costs would be covered by a combination of higher taxes and cuts in projected Medicare and Medicaid spending.

You know who's been telling the American people Obama wants to take away guns? Members of his own administration, that's who.

Such was reported Wednesday evening by CNN's Bill Schneider in a piece addressing a new poll that found only 39 percent of Americans support stricter gun laws compared to 46 percent who want no change to current legislation .
It may have to do with President Obama and the new administration.
