Virginia Banning is  Cleland Wells's and Shirley Blake's niece, so it may still be in the family if she has bought it.  Thanks for the information.

William Henry Wells was my great-grandfather, and I am delighted you have some information on the Flag Day activities, Marcia.  I will see if I have some additional documentation on this gathering.

I recall going to Fairview School every June 14 for the celebration as a child.   My grandmother, Pearl Wells Hebb, and her close relatives continued this tradition until it was discontinued (I don't know when). There was always a program after the covered dish lunch.  Grandma would always "volunteer" me to play a piano solo, and others would sing, play instruments, give readings, etc.   In the 1950s when I have memories of going there, Jessie Kling, was one of the main leaders of the association.  She was Henry Kling's mother. John Wells was also a faithful leader to keep the occasion going every year.  Most of those attending had grown up in that part of the county and gone to school at Fairview.  These people all were so devoted to the heritage of the flag and created so much respect for our nation.  I think about Flag Day every year to this day.

Cleland Wells bought the land where the school sits, and his siblings used it for large family gatherings for many years.  After his death, his siste, Shirley Blake,  now owns it, I believe.

College football games start on TV today, as well as hunting season has started.  Many may be traveling or doing Labor Day weekend activities with their friends and family.  It looks like a beautiful weather weekend to welcome the autumn season and enjoy being out and about.  Happy Labor Day to all!!!!  Have a great three-day weekend!!!!

The www.caringbridge.com site is such a wonderful way for people to keep in touch with families and lend support and encouragement.  We have a friend in Arkansas who is battling cancer, and it has been great for those of us who can keep communicating with him and his family from afar and is a great source of strength for them as they know how many people are praying for them.  One link leads to another sometimes, and you may find yourself following the progress of someone you don't even know.

I encourage everyone on this Forum to log into the site and type in TimHolsinger and leave a message for him and his family.  I'm sure they would appreciate all of our concern.

Thanks for the info., Janet.  What hospital in Wichita is he in?

Hazel Moore's tradition for many, many years was to make popcorn balls every Halloween.  Since she had taught so many students in the Howard Public School and the Methodist Church, she had lots and lots of trick-or-treaters and always kept a log of those who came by on Halloween.  When I was young and her mother was still living, they would be making the popcorn balls fresh as the evening progressed. I can still smell the aroma from her kitchen of freshly popped popcorn!!  Since she has been unable to keep this tradition up, her niece in Washington has been preparing treat bags and FedExing them so she can greet all the trick-or-treaters.

I really doubt that she is up to an interview at this point.  She just turned 98, and although she is still fun to stop by and visit with, her memory is really slipping.  She is such an amazing lady and so special to so many.  Although she never married, she and her mother raised her sister's two girls from a very young age after the deaths of their parents and also several of her cousins after their mother died.  Their home was always open to anyone in need.  Many people in Howard cherish her as their 1st grade teacher, and I have fond memories of her as a wonderful lifelong neighbor.

What a great piece of advice.  It is just as true today as it was in the 1800s!!!

Marcia,

Was the title of this article "Gas Explosion at Severy"?  I don't think Smith & Goodwin ever had a store in Severy.  I may be wrong,
but I think it was always on Main Street (Wabash) in Howard.  Of course this was long before my dad was associated with it, but I have never heard that it was ever located anywhere else.
