On October 19, 1781, at Yorktown, Virginia, General Charles Cornwallis surrendered to American and French forces. The American Revolution was over.
In fact, the British did not surrender. The war did not end. Cornwallis only surrendered his army of 7,000 and did not surrender the British Empire.
Several other British armies remained along the Atlantic seaboard.
In 1782, several battles were fought along the Ohio River, in South Carolina, and in western Virginia. Neither side gathered any momentum.
On November 4, 1782, an attack by Washington's subsidiary forces against the British in South Carolina was one of the last of the war.
On February 4, 1783, King George III issued a Cessation of Hostilities order to his troops in the US.
On April 19, 1783, with British troops still on American soil, George Washington issued a proclamation to his troops fighting had ended.
On September 3, 1783, the Revolutionary War ended when Britain and the USA met in Paris and signed a treaty. Among other things, the treaty allowed for the safe evacuation of Redcoats from American soil.
