Title: the official city of Howard, KS website
Post by: the shadow on July 18, 2014, 08:15:24 PM
In recent events the HHS rolled out Obamacare with their website and nothing worked on it. This reminds me of that. I have went to the Elk County Kansas Official page (http://elkcountyks.org/) and looked at our city of Howard page. All I can say is WOW! I hope to hell that we are not paying for this page. I hope that we are not paying anyone on city time to create this page, because obviously they don't know what the hell they're doing! It is illegible and incomprehensible at best and city officials should take note and fire whoever is incompetent on the creation of this page. This does not look well for our city and anyone across the country can look at it and see exactly what kind of incompetence runs amok in this town. Please take a look at this and let me know what you think! I am appalled! I doubt that there will be any backlash over this worthless site. In fact, in my years of experience in watching local government or national, stupidity will get promoted and rewarded!

:o :o LOLOL  It would appear that the "web architect" has neglected to fill in the ready-made boxes!! lolol  How funny!  ;D ;D  Yeah, that doesn't leave a good impression, does it?  Ah, well...I am willing to wager that either someone already on city payroll is doing this (or it's being done gratis by someone attempting to bring Howard into the 21st century).  Either way...It's the weekend...Do web architects work on the weekend????? lol  Oh, this did bring a smile to this old cat's face!!! lol

It's nice to see, Catwoman, that you jumped to the defense to whoever put this monstrosity up before it was ever finished and as always you're having a laugh at our expense. This makes our city look ignorant as hell. If they had their granddaughter make this page, someone should've looked at it before they gave the OK to put it up. I believe my great granddaughter could've done better than this and she would've probably done it for free.  Our city department is always closed on the weekends and I know that this page has been up for more than a week. Moline and Longton pages look pretty good and are legible and easy to navigate. Howard is the only one that continues to make us look incompetent and WE are the county seat!

And what kills me is that it has been 5 days and it's still there! Does no one that works for the city of Howard look at this forum? Has no one that reads this forum ran and told anyone that works for the city of Howard? It amused Catwoman so much that she didn't tell anyone in the know? I find this hard to believe! Maybe it's because they are ALL incompetent! This site should have never been put up without having been completed, edited and approved by the governing body. The failure to do so shows the lack of leadership and incompetence on our council and proves as reason why they should be voted out or removed. Inkompetence komes with being konnected apparently!

Why don't you contact the city hall and voice your concerns directly to them?  Their number is 620 374-2202.

Thank you Wilma but I'm quite capable of looking up the phone number without your help. It's on my bill. Everyone around the country can see how ignorant people are here. I'm glad you showed up for the dance. You're helping to make my point. And don't just direct your comment towards me. Everyone living in town here pays the city. We are paying for this atrocity of a webpage; so EVERYONE should voice their concerns, not just me!

What did they tell you?

???  I figured that if I, as computer illiterate as I tend to be, could have found it, then it was common knowledge.  I apologize for not having notified anyone...But I sincerely figured that whomever was working on it would get it rectified quicker than it evidently was accomplished.  I don't tend to tell people their business when it comes to computers, just simply because I stink at the endeavor.  You will NEVER hear me give advice or commands when it comes to computers.  Except for the fact that they keep me connected to my friends and family, I'd chuck them completely and never look back.

There is one more good thing about my computer.  I can play endless Solitaire and not get tired from the shuffling and dealing.

It has been 12 days since I started this thread about the City of Howard's website and from what I've been told everyone is fully aware of the problem. Ten working days tomorrow and this website has still not even been changed or disabled. So we know this has been up at least a month and nothing has been rectified. It's ridiculous. Even the city workers just laugh about it. I'm glad our city dollars are being well spent on illiterate individuals to put up such an atrocity and just call it good. We, the county seat, are the laughingstock of Elk County!!

So what did the city people that you talked to tell you about why the web site is the way it is?

Wilma, I'm going to ignore you and assume that you're around my age. Therefore, why do you continue asking ignorant questions repeatedly? If you cared about your community as much as I do and our community's image as much as I do, you would call and complain too. But you keep coming back to me and only me. Therefore, you're just targeting me. Apparently, I'm important enough that you read what I have posted, you care what I have posted but only want to ask ignorant questions to me. Why don't you ask what kind of ignorant person would put such an atrocity up and continue to leave it up without fixing the problem? Why don't you help to be the solution instead of being part of the problem going on in our little community? Maybe if you call city hall and could have something worthwhile to contribute to this conversation, we could compare notes. Stop playing solitaire and use your phone and computer for good, not evil!

Sincerely,

Kent

Because I am not worried about it and you are.

Perhaps a better way to get results would be to take your concerns to the City Council.  I doubt that any of them read the Forum and are probably not aware of the situation.  This Forum isn't really the way to accomplish anything in Elk County.  Dealing directly with the people that can make changes works better.

Wilma,
There have been 583 views on this subject in less than 2 weeks. Someone has read it and I'm sure someone has informed our city council and city employees. And the reason I don't respond to your idiocy and your insistence on who I have talked to, is only because you would jump to their defense, yet again. There's a reason why I don't post much on here and mainly just read. There's an old saying, with age comes wisdom; now that's just not true in every case. For example: here's a quote:
This Forum isn't really the way to accomplish anything in Elk County.
Ross has accomplished quite a bit with his reiterative thread on Elk Konnected Handouts. A lot of backroom dealings were brought to light on that thread and it has had many thousands of views and as a result we now have a new county commissioner in our district!
Because I am not worried about it and you are.
You know as well as I do now who put together that appalling website as the official webpage for the city of Howard; but I was informed they are no longer employed by city hall. It's apparent that their previous employment with the county was somewhat questionable as well. And if I'm the only one who cares, why do you keep coming to this subject to scold me?  Is it because you approve of a website that is not legible? How about this scenario: let's say I have a secretary and my secretary types up a document that doesn't quite make sense. Do I send that document to the intended receiver without proofreading it or does she redo it in a timely manner or do I just terminate their employment? Maybe, like many other branches of the government, I would promote them and move them onto a different branch in office. Let's see how long until that branch is irreparably damaged.

You have just confirmed what I only suspected.  What would your solution be for this situation?  It is obvious that the  city needs a computer literate to fix it.  That person would expect to be paid for their services, yet the city is as in need of money as anyone else.  Perhaps when the position is filled again, the new employee will be able to take care of it.

Otherwise, would you want the city to rush out and hire a specialist to come in to fix a page that doesn't seem to be bothering anyone else?

If they can't find someone in their midst to FIX the page, then they should at least DISABLE the page! That is my solution. They don't have to THROW MONEY at EVERYTHING! That is what is wrong with this county as it is, the mindset that to fix problems you have to throw money at them!

I GIVE UP! If it's not bothering anyone else, fine. Leave it up. Let people who actually do want to look at the page and see what we have to offer, think we are all a bunch of idiots and not come here. It can't be left up to only ME to care about this community. But I would at least DISABLE the page if I didn't have a solution to fix it!

It appears to me that the page is just missing info data. I don't think it would take a rocket scientist to fill in the missing parts, only access to it. I imagine it will take a fair amount of time, how about you giving it a try shadow? May just be a matter of copy and paste on some of it.

Looks like something around only half of that site contains useable information.  And much of that is outdated, poorly formatted or incomplete.

And yes, that appears to be a 'cookie cutter' website. The template is provided by a service provider and the user just adds content.  Shake n Bake at its best.  In this case, it looks like the 'provider' is the Kansas Rural Water Association.  As a way to raise revenue, the KRWA is offering this 'service' for $500 up front and then $100/year.  Here, look for yourself:  http://www.krwa.net/demo/demo.asp  (http://www.krwa.net/demo/demo.asp)

The catch... you gotta keep the content filled in & fresh.  Not unlike that thing the county was sold several years back (for a much higher cost, of course).  And I suspect that the same employee was behind both projects.

I did notice the employee page contains a couple of names that are no longer in their referenced positions.... for very different reasons.

I wonder if they could employ a high school student with interests & aptitudes in such technology to keep the thing current.  It sure would reflect more favorably on the city.
