Title: Commercials you Love/Hate
Post by: Tobina+1 on October 14, 2009, 12:00:09 PM
So, in another life I'd like to be involved in either marketing research or doing marketing for companies.  It's interesting to me to see commercials and wonder "what the heck?" or "wow, that was cool".  I get it from my dad.  We over-analyze every commerical that comes on when we watch TV together.

So, my question for you is... what TV commercials do you either LOVE or HATE?

I can't think of any I LOVE right now, but usually beer commercials are pretty creative, especially the Budweiser ones.

The two that really annoy me are:
1)  The Geico commercials with the money stack with eyes.
2)  The new Pistachio commercials

Geico is bad.  Calvin Klein is freaky.  Local Cal Worthington Ford dealer has been making late night commercials for TV before there was TV (he should be dead by now, but NO).

Likes---------Budweiser, aflack, anything with a silly punch line because that is what gets my attention.  I will probably think of more, but I am having a senior moment right now.

The key point of advertising is to get you to remember the products name.  I've seen some very excellently made commercials, well written, well acted, well shot.  But ask me a minute later what the product was and I wouldn't have a clue.  That would make it a horrible commercial because it did not work.

On, the other hand, some very stupid, low budget, annoying commercials have been made that are extremely successful because they are so dumb or annoying that you remember them, and remember what the product is.

I remember once, K-State was playing in the Weiser Lock Copper Bowl.  Other bowls that have a corporate sponsor usually make a series of at least three or four commercials to run during the game.  Not Weiser, they had one fairly plain, cheaply made 30 second commercial and ran it at least a dozen times.  Everytime it came on I was like 'gawd, not again'.  But it worked, I remember it to this day.

I can't stand that Conklin Cars guy. He's tall, thin and grey headed.  He has the most corny jokes. I would not buy from there just in case I'd run in to him while signing the papers! ::)

I like the GE commercials with the Wright Brothers, etc. Any Budweiser with the Clydesdales, all the low key Corona Beer commercials

Yeah, I hate all the local car dealership commercials with the yelling guys and the wacko-dressed chickens, sheep, whatever.  The Conklin guy seems to have taken the opposite stance; he is pretty corney and odd.  It's his eyes, Julie... those beady bug eyes!  :o

This seems odd, but one commerical I like is the KWCH News commericials.  "Expect... news.   Expect...weather  Expect...more" etc.  Not sure if it's how it's put together or the music or what.  The weather one that shows all the old clips from big tornadoes over the last 10-15 years is good, too.  Kinda interesting how most of the news people haven't changed over that time, too!

Oh Pam, you're kidding?  The freecreditreport.com commercials are BAD!  Now that song is in my head!  Actually, the two you're talking about are OK, but the last one I saw was really bad.  It was a new one and wasn't as catchy.

Smilin Bob is funny, just b/c of the thought behind it.   :-X  All of "those" commercials are just as bad, though.  There's one about some natural men's pills or ointment, too, and those are kind of skanky.

Myrna, I agree!  The funniest ones were the original husband and wife.  The new ones they have now (wife has red hair) aren't quite as good.  The two original guys are always a hoot, too.

OK I really hate all the drug commercials.  It was explained to me one time that the manufacturing company of the medication had to either do a complete explanation of what the drug was for and side effects and everything or nothing at all with just the name of the drug and to ask your dr. about it.  Those urk me because you have no idea.  Then there are all the ones for E/D.  Now I know it is a serious thing but are the pictures to go along with really necessary?  Like the one the the couple in two seperate tubs.  Are they for real?  I know they can't show anything obscene so just don't show us anything, stupid or otherwise, and the guy with the big cheesy grin, and the tune that sticks in your head and you end up whistling it all day.  The list goes on.

I REALLY hate all the tampoon and pad commercials. I swear, can't they put those commercials in a magizine or something? Then theres the ads for the "just my size" underwear.  I don't know about everyone else but the last thing I want to see after a long day at work is an overweight woman in her underwear.

There's a commercial that seems to play on almost every break lately, especially in the evening.  Some guy orders a pizza and it shows up 13 hours later--I don't think it's actually a pizza commercial, though.  What I hate about it is the doorbell.  Every time it plays, my dogs go nuts barking.  I hate ANY commercial with a doorbell.  LOL

My favorite is the commericals being played during the Super Bowl.... funny stuff.

Yes, Super Bowl "stuff" is funny --- But I love Super Bowl so much that I would laugh at a fly crawling along the floor.

I hate all commercials.  That is the reason I DVR everything and then I fast forward through all of them.

I'm with you sister.. ( well I do like the little green Gieco and his accent) LOL but that is all..

I laugh every time at that commercial with the man and woman sitting in the living room with the sound of the skateboard in the background.  The man says "Take it outside, Charlie" and then a bulldog skateboards into the livingroom and back out towards the door.  Too funny.  I don't even really know what the heck that commercial is for, maybe flooring.

Oh, saw another one last night that was funny.  It was a dog food commercial, I think Pedigree, but a cute little dog with David Ducovony's voice saying something that the dog food promotes "optimal stools".  Then he says, "so not only am I a good pooper, but an optimum one."

That, Tobina, and R.A.M.B.O. crowded next to me in my chair this morning reminds me of the Taco Bell Chihuahua commercials.  That dog just passed away recently.  The dog was female, but they used a male voice over for the commercials.

"Yo Quiero Taco Bell"

Larryj; I know you've spoke fondly of R.A.M.B.O (not Rambo) in other posts lately, so I was wondering what that stood for?

Well, the name "Rambo" was a funny suggestion to name the 5 pound dog some sort of big ferocious or intimidating name.  What the problem is that there are many who have never heard of the movie, Rambo, with Sylvester Stallone being the all-around indestructible tough guy.  After a few times, "Rambo" didn't look impressive enough in print, so it was revised to "R.A.M.B.O." to make it sound more menacing.  My son and I are working on coming up with words to match the acronym.

Currently, R.A.M.B.O. stands for "Rough And Mean Biting Object", but we are open to other suggestions.  Maybe we should have a contest to see who can come up with words to match the acronym.

Well, as far as I know, R.A.M.B.O. has no poliical affiliations whatsoever.  At least, he has not mentioned anything to me about it.  He is content to have his chew toys, a backyard to run around in, three solid squares a day (at least until he is 1 year old and then it goes to two times a day), and a comfy place to sleep at night.  When he arises in the morning he is impatient for me to get my coffee and settle in my chair so he may lay beside me with a blanket or the snuggie when it is cool.  So, for now I think we will leave any party affiliations out of his name.  But, thanks for playing!

 >:( the commercials I really hate right now are the stores that are advertising Christmas when Halloween and Thanksgiving are not even here yet.  Think they started right after Labor Day.  >:(  There are a lot of cute commercials but I suppose my favorite has got to be the geico who put the $1 bill into the vending machine.

Haven't really watched TV in almost 2 years, but I did like the Sonic commercials, and the incredible spong monkeys on the Quizno's commercials. And the CareerBuilder.com ads with the chimps.

How do you not watch TV for two years?  I can go most of the day without turning it on, but I like the shows at night and the news occasionally.

For you R.A.M.B.O. fans, his day was busy having to go to the Vet for a checkup.  The vet determined he was now old enough to get his rabies shot and other puppy shot that he needed.  He will not have to go back for a year for a checkup.  One more week and we can start leash training in a serious manner.  Three weeks ago, when he got a shot, he was in a pretty sour mood all day, but seemed to tolerate today's shot okay.  At least, he was happy enough to play fetch during the coffee hour tonight.

He asked me to express his thanks to all his fans, (even you, Billy) for your interest in his well-being.

Larry, when Hubby and I moved to Howard we chose to not have cable/dish due to finances and have never tried to get TV reception with just an antenna. I know that when I lived in Chanute without cable TV, the reception wasn't great, so I imagine it's even worse here. So....we get all our info and entertainment (news, some TV shows, some movies, etc.) on the internet. So far it's working out fine. We watch what we want when we want, and we don't have to sit through annoying commercials.

In reading your post, I was reminded of my grandmother.  She had a tall antenna on the side of the house.  I don't remember what stations were available in the late 50's and early 60's, but I do remember that in order to receive one station or another required her to go outside and rotate the antenna by pushing on a bar.  She was in her seventies then.

Thanks for the memory.

I get tired of all of them after while, but my favorite tonight is the Jim Beam with Rent-a-puppy!
