Diane..The surge in sales actually began during the election, when then-candidate Obama emerged as the front-runner. It intensified after he won.
Many of those buyers are first-time gun owners. And believe it or not.. Women are right in there buying for personal defense and for home defense.
Gun sales are off the charts..
Gun ammo is the same. Manufacturers can't make enough ..fast enough.
I haven't checked lately.. but more than 6.2 million firearms background checks were performed from November 2008 through this Feb. It has only climbed since then at a fast and furious pace.
That should carry a message, shouldn't it? We're going to have our guns.

If the high number of gun sales sent any message to washington it was lost on them. Otherwise, the assault weapons ban wouldn't have been reinstated.

I actually shoot on a regular basis with real hippies left over from the 60's. Not many true hippies left. Most of them defected to the dot com boom and entrepreneurial endeavors. But I know what you mean.
