We have a very diverse group of people here on our forum. There are other threads on here that if you look and dig back you can find a lot of information about your fellow Elk County Forum Friends\Family. If you dig through the bazillion posts you can learn a lot about your fellow forum members. Maybe we can all post a short sentence or two about our connection to the forum and Elk County.
My connection is my mom was born in Howard. She is in my picture. I spent many summers in Howard. I found this site researching my family history. It has helped me reconnect with my "roots". I now live in California. My connection is through the Winn family.
David
My father was born in Howard and I also found the Forum doing genealogy research. My grandparents, Orean Draper and Mamie Taylor were married in Howard about 1905 and they left Elk County about 1915 and I didn't get to visit Howard until two years ago. I do still have relatives there that I have never met, the Barnaby's, Marion's, Boice's and the Taylor's from Elk Falls.
I did get to visit the Grace Lawn Cemetery and found the gravestones of my greatgrandfather, George Draper and greatgreatgrandparents, William and Sarah Hubbard. Also while researching found that the Hubbards were there before Elk County was formed.
I am planning another trip to Howard, just don't know when it will be.
Ms Bear
I thought that was what the roll call for all members was for. If I am wrong let know so I can post my info which has been basically posted all over the forum in different places.
Larryj
It's okay Larry, it won't cost any more! ;D
That is what roll call is for. This is just a chance to say it again in a short version. The best way is to read all the bazillion posts.

OK, my connection in the beginning was moving to Elk County as a teenager, then marrying an Elk County native. In the 62 years since then, I have actually lived in Elk County for about 5 years. Most of my life was spent in Sedgwick County and as I said somewhere else, the reason I am not living there now is that there are too many people there.
I have 2 daughters and a granddaughter here and another daughter that hopes to move back some day. I can't think of a better reason for being here.
My family and I grew up in Chautauqua and Montgomery counties. My husband and I and our children moved here in 2002. I am related to a small handful of Elk Countians and friends with many more. That would be my connection i guess. We moved here because we liked the size of Longton and the Elk Valley school. I don't need any more "connection" than that..... ;)
My connection to Elk County is that most of my great great grandparents moved there in the late 1800's, and I was born is the great city Howard but moved north to Greenwood Co. Later we lived in the Upper Paw Paw are for a year. My mother graduated at Howard in 1936, and she kept a book filled with newspaper clippings from that time until her death.

Okay, SDM, if it is free. Here goes. And, David, I will try to keep it short. HA!
My great-grandfather, Amos Andrews, came to Elk County in the late 1800's. He had four children of which one was my grandfather, Albert Andrews. Albert married Edith Hester Collins of Howard and they had nine children. There were those aunts and uncles of mine who lived in Howard and Elk County all their lives. This would include the Lyman Snodderleys, or as he was called Uncle Buck who married my aunt Mary Ellen. Another aunt and uncle would be Fred and Beulah Shepherd. My aunt Bernadine was married to Forest Redmond mentioned in another thread and was the mother of the late Bill Redmond. She was the telephone operater for many years. She later married John Weyrauch and lived SW of Howard on a farm. My aunt Emaline married Albert (Pete) Leonard and is the mother of one of our forum members. Others moved out of the area such as aunt Clarice who married Robert Anderson and lived in the Washington, D.C. area. One uncle was Richard Andrews who married Florence Morgan and another Uncle, Albert Andrews who still lives in the Wichita area. He is the last surviving. My mother was Iva Jane who married Harry Jordan and they spent some time in northeast Kansas before moving to New Mexico for the dryer climate as she had asthma really bad.
Getting back to the Elk County connection, Uncle Fred and Aunt Buelah Shepherd operated the dry cleaning shop in town. Uncle Buck Snodderley was a postal worker and delivered mail to the rural routes for many years. As I mentioned the Weyrauchs lived on a farm as well as Pete and Emaline Leonard who lived a little farther SW of the Weyrauchs. Emaline was a school teacher for many years in Elk County. Pete, after farming, worked as the caretaker at Polk Daniels Lake. There is probably more I should add, but that information escapes me at this time. I have mentioned elsewhere on the forum that at one time, I felt I was related to have the people in town. And, also there those of you who have mentioned our family connections.
My last visit to Howard was in 2002. It was brief. I met up with Bill Redmond and had lunch at the pizza place (delicious food) and then went for a tour of all the old haunts. Then left to visit a cousin in Topeka who is the daughter of Eunice Andrews who married Ernest Rhodes. Hopefully, not likely due to health reasons, I could visit again. All my relatives are still there all in one place---------Grace Lawn.
Larryj
LarryJ,
Was Herschel Stephens' wife one of the Andrews children? I thought there was some connection there.
My grandmother, Edith Collins, had two sisters. One was Suda who lived in Severy all her life and married a Henderson. The other was Ona who married Hershel Stevens. Aunt Ona was my great aunt and Hershel was my grand uncle. Their house in Howard was the home of the White Eagle statue in the front yard. Hershel worked for White Eagle Petroleum which later became Mobiloil and the logo was the flying red horse.
Larryj
Larry, that is interesting to me, I grew up across the street from Herschel and Leona, they were both really neat people. Gene was my Boy Scout Leader, and a really great guy. .
Frank Winn
Now that you mention it, larryj, I, too, have the Weyrauch connection. Your Aunt Bernadine's husband, John, was my husband's Uncle John. At the time we were maried, the county was full of Weyrauchs, too. Now, there is only me and one of my daughters that bear the name. There is , however, another daughter, a niece, a cousin who were all Weyrauchs at one time. That is all that I am aware of. I would have to go to the Weyrauch history to ascertain just when they came to Elk County. It was either in the late 1800s or the early 1900s.
Frawin, it is interesting about all the connections with other forum members. Thank you David. Gene Stephens is one of my favorite people.
Wilma, I don't remember much about Uncle John other than he always took time out for me when I would walk out to the farm. Before I was old enough to drive, I would walk out to the farm and just hang around. I am sure he was busy, but he would let me ride the horses and I helped feed the animals. Those were great times and wonderful memories now. Well, except for the time I was on the palomino and he bent down to eat some grass and I slid right off!
Larryj
Larry, I remember going to John and Bernadine's, they lived just South of the Old Sinclair Pump Station. Tom and John were also favorites of mine. I remember when they came back from the service, Navy I think, and I think both of them went to work with one of my Brother-in-Laws testing rock for the state High Department, Materials Division. Bob Redmond dated my older sister, Bob and Bill were both neat people. Come to think of it Gene's sister Edith's Husband Frank Zeleny was also one of our Boy Scout Leaders with Gene. Gene's wife, Menzenita was a Houser and her father "Forty" was one of my most memorable people growing up, Forty was Elk County Sheriff at one time, later he was the Drayman that delivered the Freight from the Railroad, he had an old Model "A" truck and he drove very slow and he would stop and let kids ride on the back on his deliveries. Forty loved young people and I was always told he was a good Sheriff. I still see Sandy Stephens some. Gene taught our Scout troop how to make Boy Scout Dinners to cook in the coals camping, it is still a favorite of all of my family and they all make them from time to time. You do have some really neat Elk County Connections.
My great grandparents were there off and on. My grandparents were there and my father and uncle grew up there.
Frawin, I don't remember a Tom or John. My memory is really hazy sometimes. I do remember the Zelenys as they were always at the Lynam reunions. The last I heard of Sandy was that she was living in Missouri. She and I are a year apart in age and when I was growing up, she and I used to hang out together. When you see her next time, tell her that her cousin Larry said hi.
Diane, we need names. Can't make a connection without names.
Larryj
Larry, I am sorry, Tom and John Weyrauch were your Uncle John's Nephews and spent a lot of time around there,. Tom and John were about the same age as Bill and Bob Redmond. Sandy maybe at the amnnual Howard High Alumni Banquet, if she is I will tell her hello from you.
Frank Winn
I posted this on a whim. I really wasn't expecting much of a response. Really I was thinking out loud. Between the responses here and the fact that people also, learned about Roll Call is great. I learned more about people I know and don't know. I think some others did too. This is what brought me to the website initially and what I feel is the unique and best part. Thanks to Teresa and Kjell and all my "forum family". I am really glad I posted this. ;D
David
Well, thanks David. It really brings all of us closer together when we see the connections. It would be hilarious if a couple of these people who pick on each others comments turned out to be cousins or something. ;D
Frawin, thanks for telling me who Tom and John were. I think I kinda remember the names now.
Larryj
As someone with a real family member on here my guess is that sometimes they want to "thunk"me on the head. I am sure some of the "forum family" members feel feel that other "forum family" need a "thunk" on the head. When I posted this I was thinking of what was really important to me.
David
Larry, what if I tell you my family's names are none of your business and what do you need the information for? ;D ;D ;D My great grandfather was col. Jacob Amberg, grandpa and grandma were Fred and Dessie Amberg, my father was Lyle Amberg and his brother was Teddy Amberg.
Ahhhhh Diane, number 1: you are too nice of a person to say that. :-*
number 2: not putting the names in would defeat the purpose of the post. :D
number 3: unfortunately, I am not related to you that I know of and that is a shame. :(
number 4: but I wouldn't have known that if you hadn't put in the names. ;D
Larryj :P
Your roots all run so deep! I grew up in Eureka and my connection to Elk County is by marriage; and of course I live here now. My husbands grandparents J.B. & Ida Hunter moved to Elk County from the Atchison area in 1930 so, of course, arent natives. I think you had to have family here in the 1800s for that. ;) Their children were Wilbur, Loys, Jack, Bernice, Wanda & Jim. Jack and his family lived here for a while, and Wanda married Ralph Logsdon in Grenola and cousin Peggy Wolfe lives there still. Jim was my father-in-law and he and Marian (Hart from Latham) had 4 kids Scott, Alan, Janette and Martin. Marty and I married in 1982 and lived here after college for a few months, then again about 15 years ago for a year; we and our youngest son (21 now) returned permanently about 2 ½ years ago. Scott and family live here on the farm, our niece Trina Cooley in Moline, and Alan and wife Joyce live east of Severy. Janette and her husband live in Garden City. I dont believe we are related to anyone else in Elk County, though I am thankful for all my friends here. ~ Joanna ~
Larry, my great grand pa was married 5 times! We might yet be related! ;D ;D ;D
I've got DEEP roots in Elk County. My mother (Ruth Hawkins Hebb) had Garrett and Hawkins grandparents settling in Elk County before the 1890s. My dad (Cecil Hebb) had Wells and Hebb grandparents settling here from the 1870s to the 1890s. A huge number of my ancestors are buried in Elk County cemeteries, and most of these folks never moved from Elk County at any time during their lives. Both of my parents and all six of their children graduated from Howard/West Elk High School. My dad was a longtime businessman on Howard's Main Street with the Smith & Goodwin Store, which later downsized into Hebb's Family Store.

David,[colorYou make me think of my gmother, she used to thunk us on the head with her thimble when we were out of order. One time I complained that it hurt, and she said that she intended for it to hurt. Else Why would she do it? :D

David, I just saw this post this morning. You know better than that, the forum is for anyone to say whatever they want and you are more than capable of expressing your feelings. There are some days I wish you would take your Mother's picture off and other days I like to look at it. I have one of her here in my office that I look at some and it really brings back memories. Post away.

Some days I think about taking her picture off . Mostly I like to look at it. It reminds me of better days.
David
p.s. Uncle Frank I don't have any pictures of myself. Maybe I will go down and get a copy of my baby picture. The one when I was about 5 years old. Dennis, Danny and I all in our blue shirts with our black dickies on. I think it is in my copy of the Winn Family Tree mom made. I was a cute little dimpled kid. I will change the picture after Mother's day.
Hey, Dianne, that is really great!!!! ;D That means there is hope yet. However, on this forum we are all "cousins" so to speak. In my earlier post, I mentioned that Amos Andrews came to Elk County in the late 1800's. In checking the family history, he came to Elk County in 1877. He was a carpenter and passed that on to two of his sons. I have somewhere a letter written about the Andrews family that details some of the places built by my grandfather and his brother. I will find and post. Amos died in 1915 and is buried in Grace Lawn next to his wife, Emma Rudy.
Larryj
Our connection to Elk County is just all our wonderful friends we have met since moving here 5 years ago. I believe our connection to the county and our friends run just as deep as family ties.
My connection is the county line!
Larryj
There is also a short history of the Amos Andrews family in the Elk County history book. It says he had a land patent for forty acres a half mile west and three miles north of Howard. The patent was issued when Grover Cleveland was president.
I am not aware of what a land patent is, especially in relation to a land claim.
Isn't a Land Patent like a claim with a deed, but it can't be foreclosed on? It's stronger protection for the owner?
Well, all claims would eventually be deeded.
I am thinking that the first deed issued to someone who has staked a claim and applied to and actually bought that claim was issued a land patent--a deed. There is something about land patent property not being "takable" for private debt settlement as long as the land was under the original owner's name. However, not paying taxes on it was another matter.
Originally, in Howard County at least, 160 acres was all that was available for claim but Congress at some point lowered that to 80 acres and then to 40 acres for those who did not want the larger amount.
My understanding is that a land patent, the deed, was issued by the president at the time--even had the president's signature--but the signature was actually from a bureaucrat in that particular U.S. Land Office.
There was still a lot of unclaimed federal land in Elk County around the time Grover Cleveland was president so I am thinking that 40 acres of land west and north of Howard lay unclaimed until Amos Andrews became the first claimant and received a land patent--a deed.
That would mean the original owner of almost every acre in Elk County would have been issued a land patent by a sitting president. The only exception might be in sections 16 and 36 of every survey township which were granted by the federal government to the state. Each county sold that land to the highest bidder and the proceeds went for the support of state and local schools. However, states could also issue land patents for property given to them by the federal government so maybe those folks received a land patent also.
Here is what I found about that.

A land patent is a supreme title to land which was originally acquired within the United States of America by a treaty. It grants the rights to the described land under the treaty to the individual person named on the patent and to their heirs and their assigns forever.
The party named on the patent may transfer by inheritance, grant, or assign the patented lands to someone else, which heir or assignee is now named on the patent by that assignment. Assignments are often made by deed, but must be accepted and the grantee must take some action to signify acceptance of the assignment. After accepting the proper assignment of the Land Patent with proper documentation, the transferee is named on the physical land patent where it says, "and to his heir and assigns forever". It is usually granted by the federal or state government to an individual or private company.
Larryj
I think what I was saying falls under that definition.
Would not swear to it, though.
Good job Larry. Waldo is the resident historian around here in my opinion. I am happy to have another fellow history buff on board. Thanks to both of you I learned a lot.
David
The Bureau of Land Management web site provides this definition of a land patent:
"Land patents document the transfer of land ownership from the federal government to individuals. Our land patent records include the information recorded when ownership was transferred."
The web site has a search for land patents issued in Kansas.
I inquired on Amos Andrews and came with "nothing found."
There were about 75 Andrews listed for Kansas but none for Elk County.
I then searched on Elk County, Kansas, and came up with only seven names and the land patents were all issued in the 20th century. Two were issued from the Independence Land Office and the other five from the Topeka land office.
Chautauqua County had seven names and all of these land patents were issued in the 20th century with one in 1945.
What all this means: I don't have a clue.

Here is a web site that shows the land patent document issued to Elisha W. Palmer of Elk County in 1907.
No No David. We are going to leave Waldo as the historian. I am too far away in distance and too many hazy memories to be of much good. But, I would like to help out when I can. And, Waldo, I meant to add that you were right on with your definition. I just forgot to add that when I posted.
Larryj
I am getting a little off subject. Since I posted this topic for my own questions and we always get off topic eventually I don't mind straying. I am combining my comments to another thread "Thank you, patyrne\Patyrn (Wilma spelling ;D).
Thanks Waldo, patyrn, Uncle Frank (frawinn), Janet and everyone else that contribute to our history. I hope everyone keeps posting on this thread and\or roll call. As my Grandma Winn used to say, I am tickled. I think that saying is pure Elk County. ;D
David
Oh yes, besides the county line connection, my Mother was born in Elk County. My Dad and his brother bought a place near Busby when they were young. My parents met at a dance in Longton and they sy the rest is history. Oh yes, my better half also grew up in Elk County.
greatguns, I have already had to "slap" Diane's hands for not giving out names. Don't make me have to yell!!!! We. and I mean the forum members can't see a connection without names. However, if you don't want to give them up, that's okay.
Larryj
greatguns, I thought you had an entry in the roll call thread, but I can't find it. Anyway, I think you are the daughter-in-law of a woman that I went to school with at Piedmont. I think you should add your life history to our roll call.
Not the first time I've been lost and it won't be the last. My info can be found on page 2 of Welcome all new members. I think I done that before Roll Call or else I wasn't smart enough to find Roll Call back then. LarryJ don't yell. ;D ;D
Well Greatguns....who's your favorite driver?? I love NASCAR too...
Greatguns, did you make it to Reno this year for Nationals, we went out in April.
I didn't go to Reno or Vegas this year. One of my team members wasn't in good health this year, so we didn't make any plans. I'll be back in full swing next year.
I'm a Jr. fan. Mostly I'm happy as long as Montoya doesn't win.
Well it looks like we are going to disagree on this one....I can't stand Dale Jr., I do like Montoya and TONY STEWART is THE man! 8)
sorry to be late with this.......for some reason I just overlooked this thread.
I am Topeka born and bred............moved to Independence with hubby and kids
in 65.
After the divorce met and married a guy (Charley Croney) from Longton (in 78) and
after that divorce just stayed in Longton.
I love the small town and the fact I can walk up and down the streets and get a sore arm from
waving at all who pass by.
I did at one time think and plan on moving back to Topeka, but found I can't afford to live up there
(fixed income-disability and most of the family have lives that would still see me alone and lonely) here I at least
have people who care........even if no one does drop in to visit)
Got a case of "Grumps" today..........the anniversary of my oldest sons death was 7 years the day before Mother's Day.
I guess that is why, but also getting depressed about my car and the lack of money to get it fixed.
Enough. SORRY!
I love living in Elk County and am comfortable here. I am related to no one here, except for my Christian Friends and people on the forum.
This should start a good conversation. You all can have your boys with their fast toys. I will take the PBR over them any day. Man and beast trying to see which can win. :D
Maude
Me too! Love PBR. Most of my favorite bulls have retired now. Little Yellow Jacket being my all time favorite.
PBR = Pabst Blue Ribbon?!? ??? ;D
Professional Bull Riding. Seems to me that the bulls win more than the riders do.
Come on now! I don't have a one track mind. ;) ;) I never miss the PBR either.
It appears to me that THE MAN might be Mark Martin or Kyle Bush if you are looking for a winner. I've met very few people in this world that I couldn't stand.
Chris Shivers, Justin Mc Bride and Adriano Moraes were my favorites. I'll have to pick a new favorite now.
Are those bull riders? The only name I can remember is Cody Hancock, the current world champion. And only then because he is a Hancock and looks exactly like one of my nephews. But I can find him on the tree.
Well Diane I believe you have good taste!
Why shucks, thank 'e very much. ;D Yes, Wilma, they were the riders ,not the bulls. ;D ;D ;D
