Title: Hazel Moore
Post by: Mom70x7 on April 17, 2009, 06:08:41 PM
Hazel Moore fell and broke her hip the other day. She had successful hip replacement surgery this morning and will be in the El Dorado hospital for about 10 days.

Hazel will be 100 this coming August 12th.

Apparently, she is charming everyone around her at the hospital!

Thanks so much for this heads up, Debbie,

We just arrived in Howard this evening, and I was looking forward to visiting Hazel at Twilight.  I guess she won't be there.  What a special lady.  I hope everyone will send her a cheer card.

The address for the hospital in El Dorado is:

Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital
720 W. Central
El Dorado, KS  67042

I was sorry to hear about Hazel. Believe it or not she was my first grade teacher. It is amazing that she will be 100 this August.

I got a note from Hazel's niece relaying that she is doing well and has relatives with her.

Rosewolf, there are MANY Forum Friends throughout Elk County who probably had Hazel as their first grade teacher during her many teaching years.  I missed having her when I was in school, but had the privilege to be her neighbor my entire life (from birth) until I left Howard, and cherish that continuing close friendship.

I always enjoyed talking to her while she was at Twilight. I worked there till I moved out here last August. I worked in the dining room. It was nice to see her smiling face.

How long did you work at T.M.? My Grandma was there for years, but died in '95.

I only worked there about a year. But I knew a lot of the people already before they went there.

That name rings a bell with me.  Can't place  a face.  My mother entered HTM in 1994 and was there until 2001.

Diane, I remember your Grandparents very well, when they moved to town they moved about a block from my parents. I also remember them when they lived in the country. I knew your Uncle Ted the best, he loved to visit, he traded at a service station that my brother was at and he came in there pretty regular. Yout Grandfather was a Master Gardener and always had a big garden. I remember meeting your Father also.

Aw, that's so nice. Thank's so much. Uncle Teddy was quite a character. I think my interest in gardening came from them. Daddy always had a big garden too and we canned and froze a lot. Had lots of fruit trees too.
Rosewolf, Grandma Dessie was at TM from 1982 to 1995 so you might have known her. All her friends were there and she out lived most of them, lived to be 104. Doris Shipman kept me informed, so I always knew if she needed anything.

I think that I remember hearing the name. My grandmother was in there as well for a bit. Her name was Lora Jones. I believe that she was in there in 1994 as well. That was also the same year that she passed away in Cedar Vale hospital.

When we visited in Grandma at TM in1990, I met my father's Jr. High math teacher there. That set me right back on my heels. I wish I could remember her name. Daddy was 76 at the time!

I know Irma Buchele used to teach in the Howard Schools, but I don't know if she taught math.

Diane, I figured that your Father attended Clear Creek rural school thru the 8th grade.

I stopped in to see Hazel today at the hospital, and she was standing up!  She's doing pretty well.  She has been taking a few steps, sitting in a recliner, and she knew who I was just fine! She even was joking with me a little.   She is an amazing lady!  She may get back to the nursing home Friday or next Monday if all goes well.

Frank, Daddy said that he and Teddy went to Union Center School, the one that was moved to Howard. Did the Clear Creek school burn down? I think Daddy mentioned that. I have a photo of the kids in his class and it says Union Center on the back.

According to the Kansas ORSH List, they were still having school at Clear Creek in 1928. In fact Gladys Morgan  was teaching there in 1927 when she met Guy V. Denton, come to think of it Gladys was probably in Twilight Manor in 1990. Ted and Lyle had a long way to go from the Ranch to Union Center to School .

I did check with someone this morning and the old Clear Creek School is now gone. They also had neighborhood church in that school building, I am told. The building was still there in the early 60s, I don't know when they tore it down.

If you are talking about the school I think you are talking about, it was still there in the early 90's, though not usuable in any sense of the word.

The Clear Creek School and the Clear Creek Methodist Church each had their own building.  The Clear Creek schoolhouse was built in the SW corner of the NW1/4 of Sect. 34, Twp 29, Range 9.  The tract of land deeded for the church commenced at the SE corner of the N1/2 of the NE1/4 of Sect. 33, Twp. 29S, Range 9E, running from thence west 20 rods, thence north 40 rods, thence east 20 rods, thence south 40 rods to the place of beginning, containing five acres, more or less.  The Clear Creek Cemetery was/is also situated on that five acres the church occupied.

Which building stood the longest?  There was only one building that I remember and a small cemetery.

Church services were still being held at the Clear Creek Methodist Church in the early 1920's, but it is thought that by 1930 the church had been discontinued.  I do not know what happened to the church building or when/why it disappeared.
The last year the Clear Creek School was in use was the term of 1945-46.  Most, but not all, of the old country schools were auctioned off once they were no longer needed.

I got a message from Hazel Moore's niece that she is doing remarkably well following her hip surgery last week.  She is walking, and her hip is healing wonderfully.  She remains in the hospital in El Dorado as they are working to adjust some of her medications to get her waking and sleeping schedules straightened out.

She loves getting cards and letters, so pass the word to your friends and neighbors, and everyone drop a card in the mail for Hazel soon.  It would certainly brighten her day!

Thanks, Debbie,

Plans must have changed since yesterday evening.  Obviously it seems pretty hard for us to keep up with a 99-year-old lady!!!!!!!  Hopefully her mail will catch up with her in the near future, whether while she's in the hospital or after she returns to Twilight Manor.  The important thing is to keep those cards and letters coming!!!
