It looks like it might be UPPER PAW PAW school before the addition on the West end????????

Looks a lot like Star west of Moline. Not saying it is but same style.
This is off the subject, but then again maybe not. I used to own the little house located at 414 W.2nd street here in Moline. It was obvious that at some time it had been added onto at the back. I was told that an old school house was moved in and tacked onto the back. And you could see where indeed a small building was added on and then expanded to make a bedroom and kitchen. This would have been the old Dodson home, they owned the jewelry store here in Moline at one time. In fact I did meet Goldie Dodson when we first came here. Anyway, out of curiosity does anyone know where this old schoolhouse came from? It would have been very small. not nearly as large as the Paw Paw or other examples I have seen here. Any ideas?
Marcia, that might be Independence, I will check with Myrna she has pictures of Independence, I think. It looks alot like Independence as I remember it.
That's a pretty typical of school houses in that area. The name doesn't ring a bell with me as ever having been anyone living up around there by that name. What I am wondering is ---it appears there are two doors in the front. Independence had only one door. Also, Independence had only one step up and had a large slab (square) in front of the door. This pictures shows three steps. I'll do some checking and see if Mom knows anyone by that name.

Off subject but you sure stirred up memories! Don't know anything about the add-on. I'm sure my Dad would have known. Goldie was a sweet lady. Their son, Dale and wife, Jeris Pat were great fun. Her parents and mine had cabins next to each other at the Old City Lake. Jeris worked for the folks in the cafe. Dale would come by our house to wake my brother up for early morning fishing. He always knocked on my window so I could get him up. Fun times. For a time Jeris and Dale ran the Cattleman's Motel and Bar. Sure miss them.
Granny, I uncovered a strip of sidewalk in the front yard at that house, it had Dales name engraved in it. In front of the garage and along the side has a brick paving. The bricks came from the Cedarvale RR station I was told. I was also told that the garage was constructed from materials salvaged from that station. I can believe it as the upper beams are quite large. I brought a stored beam from the rafters of that garage with me when I moved from there. That beam is currently being used as a brace across the dining room floor in the cellar of this house. So you never know where things will end up do you?
I am browsing the 1905 and 1915 Kansas State Census for my Taylors, Drapers, Hubbards and Williams. I will watch for the Bauman family. Wonder if he was the teacher. I will post if I find anything.

Marcia, I know the school house I am going to mention is south of where you are concentrating, but was wondering if anyone remembers Excelsor School house that was south of Hunters and back to the east. It sat on the north side of the road. Can't remember if it had two front doors or not. Maybe someone will remember or will have a picture of it. Still trying to think about the picture you posted yesterday.

Myrna, While Dale and I lived on the Copperhead Gulch Ranch from 1967 to 1972 we had to drive to the The Excelsor School and pick up our daily mail. Kind of fun when you timed it just right and others in the area where picking up their mail. Gertrude Sherman was sometimes there and it was easy to talk to her. Tina Hubbells folks Garroldo (spell ?) had a box there, but don't remember visiting with them. seems like another box but the name escapes me now. We believe that the school was moved to another location during that time or close to it but don't know where, did it go to town? North of Margaret Greggs museum? Guessing, don't know. Barbara and Dale
The school house in the museum complex was the Union Center school from out at Lynn Perkins. I am thinking that my husband went to the Excelsior school but he isn't here now to tell us anything about it. Maybe if I am right, Jo can tell us.
Frank, I think the Excelsior school house had two doors on the South. The building was moved into Howard by Bud Meisch and it is part of the house where Jim Stange lives. Marty
Thanks Marty, I was trying to remember, I went by it everyday for two years as I farmed and ran cattle on the Gibson place right East of it. Myrna's mother said she thought it had two doors also. Did your Uncle Jack, Aunt Berniece or your Dad go to Grade school there or did they go into Howard. It would have been about the same distance either place. If they went to Excelsior, could one of them be in the picture, I looked at my Howard Alumni books and your Aunt Berniece graduated in 1933 and your Uncle Jack graduated in 1936 and your father in 1947. It is a shame so many of those old schools disappeared without much history recorded about them.
Frank
Is there a date with that photo? If it is the school that my husband attended and he is in the photo, it would be about 1934-35. Jo, where are you? We need your input.

Marcia, I checked all of the Cenus records from 1900 to 1930 and didn't find any Baumans in Elk County during that time.

I didn't find them on the 1905 Kansas State Census and didn't get to the 1915 today. Will keep watching.

Marcia, there are some Bauman postings in the Genealogy Forum, and one post is for Baumans in Kansas . You might post there and find out something.
Frank, I know that Dad attended Excelsior, and I would assume that Aunt Wanda did also. Grandpa moved to the farm in January of 1930, so I am thinking the other kids would have been in High School. Marty
Wanda, I had forgotten about her, my older brothers and sisters all talked about spending time with the Hunter kids, when my family lived on the river in the house just South of West Elk. Your Dad was about the same age as my brother Dwight. Wasn't the other older brother, John???
Marty, Myrna and I were wondering where the name Excelsior came from for a Rural Grade School, I looked up the meaning and it fits. Excelsior, a Latin word meaning "superior", "lordly", "ever upward"
Thel oldest child was Wilbur. He was already attending college when the family moved to Howard. Grandpa was John, and was always known as J.B.
I kind of wondered where the name came for Excelsior myself. Dad referred to it as Hardpan.
I remember going in the building. It still had the blackboards and a lot of the desks in it. It had a coal shed and outhouses North, and a horse rail to the West fence. It had a smell to it that was distinctive, but I can't quite place it (some type of cleaner). Some of the groups met there periodically. Grandma went to Farm Bureau, and took me with her once in a while.
There is a another old school near Howard at
