The footings and pad have been poured, and the roof trusses are done and in the contractors shop. So you should start to see alot more activity with the building very soon. The Library Hours are Tues. 9am-12,Wednesday 9-5, Sat. 9-12. Once expasion is done we will be looking to expand hours to hopefully open on a daily basis. The expansion is being paid for by the Library with funds that have donated or memorials left to the Library over the years. We have had great support from the community and have received some very generous donations from local organizations and individuals. Kristi
I am so happy to see that there are going to be changes. I helped to move the library with Esther across the street in the 1980's. Good thoughts coming your way.
I guess I missed something either here or in the newspaper.
Is there a new library going up, or an expansion?
I have always wanted to stop and go in the Moline library but have always come through town at the wrong time.
The Moline Library will have an addition to the present building and going to the North. Maybe Kristi could post a picture the architect's design of the addition. Plus maybe she could post the hours the library is open. Know a lot of our friends on the Form both near and far will be interested on the progress. Barbara
The Lang Construction of Independence is on site today to start framing. Looks like we will start to see real progress now.
Kristi
Curious:
How much bigger will the library be when finished?
Is the extra room for more stack space or for general purpose use?
How many volumes does the library have?
I don't have the plans at the house for actual dimensions, but we will double our space. The current library will be the new childrens section and the expansion will hold the adult stacks. Our hope is to use mobile stacks in the childrens section so that stacks can be moved to provide more space for summer reading activities, and for multipurpose use for the community. We are wnating to implement some new programs, classes, after school programs with the new space and extended hours. During the summer I have quite a few high school kids that help with summer reading, and normally if I need a volunteer i have several loyal patrons that can aslways be counted on to help. But we don't really have an existing volunteer program. If I need to be gone during Library hours I can usually count on Mom (Pat McCarty) to volunteer to fill in. Kristi
Sorry mis-read previous post.you asked about volumes not volunteers. We currently have 22,250 fiction and non-fiction hard back books, 1024 paper back books, and approx. 1400 young adult and childrens volumes. Sorry for the mix up.
We also have 3 new computers when the expansion is done we will be adding a 4th that does not have internet access but will be loaded with education preshool programs for the younger kids that parents don't want on the internet but want them to know how to use the computer. We have wirleless internet so you can bring your laptop and use our high speed internet. We have shut in delivery service for those in town that can't make it to the Library.
I am no expert, but I would think 25,000 volumes is pretty darn good for a town of Moline's size.
Not bad at all ! That doesn't include the audio books and movies. Oh! one more thing the coffee is always free.
Kristi
I had some figures showing the number of library volumes that Elk and Chautauqua counties had in 1875, but, as usual, cannot locate them. I was surprised that there were local libraries then.
Chautauqua had the larger number but most in that county were in private collections. Elk did not have any private collections listed. There was nothing listed for Moline since it was not around yet.
I suppose other public libraries are the same way now but our local Arapahoe County library has a check out system in which there is no contact with a librarian. One scans his library card at a scanner, then scans the book, then takes a receipt and walks out. Almost like a self checkout in Walmart.
Most of the time, I don't even see a librarian but I know they are there because I can hear them talking behind a partition. Don't know if the theft rate has increased since they put the system in a few years ago.
It must have been a huge effort to put bar codes on each volume in the library. The card catalogs have given way to computer files, which can be accessed on the internet also.
Under this system, one cannot look inside the cover and see how many times or how frequently a book has been checked out.
Chautauqua County had four public libraries and eighty-seven private libraries with a total of 5,914 volumes. Public library names were not listed.
Elk County had four public libraries in four townships with 1,739 volumes. Township names were not listed.

I know alot of even smaller libraries are beginning to automate. I believe that Howard and Sedan were at one time scheduled for automation but I don't know if it was ever carried through at either library. I am not convinced that it is cost effective for smaller libraries. It can be quite costly for all the supplies needed to automate (this cost would include computer equipment and software needed. I think the state would like all libraries automated, for Interlibrary Loan purposes. Thanks for the interesting facts on both counties.
Well the walls are up and yesterday they started putting the roof trusses on. Really starting to look like a building.
Do you take book donations? I would be happy to drop some off on my travels through Moline.
Yes we do take used books. We are glad to have them.
Well we are all enclosed except for the door and window. The roofers have been notified that the building is ready to roof. The Brick guy has been here to match the brick. The electrician was there today for the first time. The metal guy will be here some time this week to measure for the fascia. Just a reminder we are still doing the penny drive because we are still coming up short for the built in storage and circulation desk. So keep saving that pocket change.
The metal guy is coming? There has to be a lion and scarecrow joke in there somewhere. ;D ;D ;D
Ahem... Diane... it has been a while since you've been to Kansas, apparently... it's the TIN MAN, not the metal guy! 8) ;D
Starting today the computers at the Library will be unavailable for use until further notice. They will be cutting the openings into the old building and the computers had to be removed because of the dust. I'll let you know when they become available again.
thanks Kristi
Well they have cut through the wall to make the opening into the new addition. so right now it's cold and dusty in the Library.
Also thought I'd let you know that Mike Hall has finished the Community Building Kitchen renovation and is now working on the Nurses Office. If you get a chance stop in and see Mike's handiwork he really did a good job on the Kitchen. Thanks Kristi
Last night Dale and I hosted the Senior Citizen monthly card party at the Moline Community Building. Wow, does that kitchen shine. Mike did a great job. Thanks to all who got that accomplished. Lots of compliments given out last night. We had six tables of pitch players. What fun. Come join if you get a chance. Barbara
Sorry to say that the Library is now closed until further notice. Returns can still be done at the drop off box. But we can not even get to most of the shelves to check books out. Hope to reopen as soon as possible but probably won't happen until the glass is in.
Thanks Kristi
The heating ducts are in and the drywall has begun. For those familiar with the design, we had to drop the circulation desk, but we did keep the storage behind the circulation desk. We just have not raised enough money for the circulation desk and we can always add that later. More important to finish the building. We had to reframe the overhang over the old outside entrance door because of rotting wood and that was an unexpected cost.
Just wondering if there is an update of the library construction status...
Sorry so long since last update, but there hasn't been much to report. But we started to make some progress last week. The drywall is done and they installed the door and windows. We've been touring some of the local Libraries to get ideas for the interior. we've been to both grade school libraries, Eureka, Independence, Andover,Longton,Howard. Eureka, Independence, And Andover all have new Libraries. Thanks Kristi
Driving down the street the building looks so nice. Really made it look a bigger, can't wait to see the inside. Thank you guys for taking pride in our community and going places to see what looks good and what works the best. It is exciting to see positive things going on. Thank you very much for the update and keep them coming. Barbara
The contractor says he will be ready to lay carpet in the addition by mid next week, we then have to move everything to the new side and lay the carpet on the old side. But we are getting close and maybe just a couple of weeks off our original contruction schedule. They tell us that it might take a while for the brick layers, but we can be open without the brick on the exterior. Ir's very exciting and you can really tell now what a nice difference it's going to make to our Library. Thanks Kristi
The painting is done. Carpet layers coming Monday. They delivered the brick yesterday. thanks Kristi
The bricks are going up. the carpet is going down. Friday we are moving books and shelving into the new addition. Thanks Kristi
I just wanted to thank everyone who came to help at the Library the last couple of days. We got things done alot more quickly than I imagined. Thanks Again Kristi
The brick work is finished! We did the painting in the old part this week. The carpet is finished. We have some shelving to put together, but we are getting close to reopening. I cann't belive how much more light and space we have. Thanks Kristi
Being a very digital person I have to say that I still love having a hard copy in my hands. I hope we never lose our physical library where we can go and actually touch the information.
David
Well all the hard work has paid off and the Library is ready to open today. It really looks great. Hope you will all get a chance to come and see for your self. Thanks to all the great volunteers who have sorted, dusted, cleaned. See you at the Library!
Kristi
I'll try to come by and take a picture.
Congratulations!
that would be great Rudy, thanks. Kristi
The Moline Library board voted to expand Tuesdays hours, starting June 2, 2009. New Library Hours are as follows. Tuesdays 9-12 and 3 pm-6 pm, Wednesday 9-12 and 1-5, Satudays 9-12. We will see how these hours work and expand from there as needed.
Open House has been scheduled for June 20, 2009, 9-12 with ribbon cutting at 10:00 am.
Thanks Kristi
I had really hoped that Ruth and I could make it over for this. Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to make it. We will have to come over another time and take a tour. Congratulations on the new remodel!
Buddyboy, sure hate that you will miss this as I remember how hard you use to work in the Library while you lived here. Also remember how great you and your sister use to Rock and Roll dance together. :) But do make it in whenever you get a chance. Know you will be happy with the updates that have been made. Kristi is a wonderful Librian and an asset to our little community. Barbara
Sure wish I lived closer...I'd love to see the updates in the Library. :-[ I'm so glad that this investment has been made for the kids...The written word is so iimportant.
We don't dance much together or apart. Gretchen lives in South Dakota. She is a doctor with the Uniform Corps and works on the Indian reservation there. She has bad knees and I have a bad back. I doubt I could do those Travolta moves as good as I once did. HA!
Kristi has given me some dates that a lot of you might want to mark on your calendars.
The Moline Library will start doing some mini classes and other neat things to do at the library.
The classes will be free and to sign up just call Kristi at the Library 647-3310.
Regular Library hours are: Tues. 9-12
Weds. 9-12.....1:00pm-5:00pm
Sat. 9-12
Oct. 21st, 2009 Terrye Robbins (Fiction Author of mysteris) will be there at 4:00pm to give a talk.
Nov. 4th at 2:00pm a mini class on how to buy and sell on EBay and CraigsList. This will give people who do not feel comfortable just jumping in and doing this on their own a good opportunity to learn and ask questions.
Pre-school Story Hour is held every Tuesday at 10:00am.
Several more classes are in the working stage and it will be fun and interesting to see this grow!
This is awesome. It is so good to see the library coming to life now. Thanks Kristi for all you are doing!
