Title: Local pictures
Post by: Teresa on November 26, 2008, 06:41:31 PM
These 2 pictures were given to me by Bob Nungessor and taken by a man in Grenola, KS.
He said they were taken with one of  those new night cameras you leave in the woods.
The date was October 2008 at about 10PM according to him.
The area was South and East of Mulvane, KS.

Game wardens have always said to all the locals here that there ARE NO long tails in this area. ( I know different cause we saw one a long time ago  in the rocks while deer hunting) Lots of guys have seen them .... but no pictures..

G Wardens also said it is against the law to shoot them too ( why are they worried about anyone shooting if  they claim that there aren't any ::)  )  Said there aren't any wolves in these parts either.. but there darn sure is.. Mark and Danny had 2 of them right in front of them out on Raders land while hunting.

But these pictures pretty much proves it once and for all..that the cougars are alive and well in our area...

I believe you, Teresa.  I have had several trustworthy people tell me that they have seen cougars in the northwest part of the county and these are people that wouldn't lie about it.

The other night when we were coming home from Wichita, we were on 99, we saw something on the side of the road that had just crossed in front of us.  Jason said "that looks to big to be a coyote.  I would swear that was a wolf."  I'm betting it was too.

I have seen the cougars at night, too.  Coming back from the northwest side of the county one night after checking out a pasture fire, one crossed the road in front of me.  I had to really ask myself if I saw what I saw.  I did.

See, told to me by people that wouldn't lie?

Although I do not doubt there are cougars in this vicinity, I do have to wonder about these photos however. I have done a lot of trekking through Kansas wilderness and I don't think that I have ever seen a wild pine sapling like that in the photo. It just makes me wonder about the area that these were taken in? We have lots of cedar, but no wild pine that I know of. Unless the area is a planted one.

Sixdogsmom, we agree with you on the pine saplings, but can honestly say that we both definately saw a huge long-tailed cat one mile west of Cresco Cemetery about 4 years ago.  Looked just like the ones in the picture.

I too have seen cougars in SE Kansas! That is why I said I do not doubt there are cougars in the vicinity. I saw one just last year as we were returning from Kansas City. It was here in Elk county, standing on a bluff that overlooked a creek. Perfectly silouetted against the sky. I just don't want to meet one in my back yard!  :o :o :o

Teresa said the area was south and east of Mulvane.  The pine seedling is possible.  Lots of pine trees have been planted in developments in the area.  I am not going to ask her who took the pictures, but if she knows and vouches for his veracity, I am not going to doubt it.  Southeast of Mulvane isn't that far from Elk county.

We have a few pines at our farm.. possibly planted there.. but non the less ..they are there.

And yes Wilma.. I'll vouch that they are exactly what they are said to be...by the person who said that they were......

((WHAT.....  (http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/headscratch.gif) did I just say....

(http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/groan.gif) sometimes I soooooo confuse myself.

That is cool!!  When I was going to get water, south of here a ways, something ran across the road that had a long tail and I could have swore it was a Cougar, but I didn't see it well enough to say for sure.  Sure wish I had seen it better.

Haven't seen anything that looks like a wolf or sounds like a wolf, but that would be kind of neat as long as they all stay away from the house.  LOL  Have enough trouble with the coyotes coming right up to the french doors on the backside of our house.

It probably was a cougar, Sarah.  You are right in the middle of the territory of the sightings that I have been told about.

Those pictures are amazing!  We saw a longtailed cat of some kind about 20 years ago at the Howard City Lake.  It was in the middle of a summer afternoon.  It was walking on the brushy side of the lake by the water.  But, you know there aren't any of those animals around here!!!

We've seen and trapped quite a few bobcats out here. But haven't seen any cougars yet. Billy says he once saw one when he worked on a ranch outside Madison. They also had a few wild hogs up there.

Did anyone else see this story on KAKE-10 news at 6 last night? These photos were not taken near Mulvane, but in Nebraska.

Nobody knows where these pictures were taken, the person hasn't stepped foreward to own up to the location. Try this link to a Omaha paper.

I had an email from Chris - the park manager at Elk City - and he has confirmation that the pictures were taken in South Dakota -- verified by the orange ear deer tag.  I guess they were circulation in Minnesota claiming to be from there -- that is what one of our Minnesota friends sent to me.  Good pictures -- vast coverage.  lol lol lol

My kids will be so happy to hear that.  LOL  They've been scared to death to go outside in the dark ever since they saw the pictures.   ;D

Well poop. I will definitely send this whole link to Bob Nungesser with a coupon for 40 lashes with a wet noodle for leading me astray.   :police:  I even double checked with him... and he vouched for the man who gave him the picture. ( Maybe the man who had the picture obviously didn't know who sent it to him..  :P
Oh well... such is life. ::)

Even if that one picture isn't from around here..
I still  HAVE seen them around Elk County.  So they are here.  :)

Well, I've heard that a mountain lion's "territory" is a 200 mile radius (which means 400 mile across the circle), so that's a lot of ground where they could be seen at any time!

Tonight's Bartlesville Examiner has a story and a picture of a Cougar taken by a Motion Activated Camera in the NE Oklahoma area. It has picture of a big buck the hunters got and one taken of the Cougar on the trail in and around their deer feeder.. There is no doubt that cougars are in the area. There were numerous sightings of Cougars on the River Road from Howard to Elk Falls back in the late 50s and 60s. Howard armstrong lived on the River Road and I heard him tell of watching a Cougar sneaking up to his Corral where he had a Mare and Colt. Also Worky and Irene Workman lived on that road and we played Canasta alot with them and Workie told of seeing a Cougar several times in the area where they lived. Marion Barber lived on the same Road close to Howard Armstrong and close to Workie and I have heard him tell of seeing a Cougar many times.

Well, I know people know they're around here in plenty, but I just chased off a bobcat from my yard today; in broad open and daylight!  I think he was after a cat-breakfast.

And by "chased off", I don't mean running and yelling.  He's lucky I was nervous and cold... twice.  Grrr.

Oh the memories you brought back, we also played Canasta with Worky and Irene when our boys were very little. We lived on the Copperhead Gulch Ranch and traveled to the Workmans at least once a week for the card games. The view from their home was terrific to watch the wild life. Barbara

Barbara, Marion and Charlene and Myrna and I used to play Canasta all night with Worky and Irene, what fun, never a dull moment.

Francis (Worky) Workman was my first cousin....He looked enough like my Daddy to have been his son.   Worky's first wife - the Mother of Arlene and Judy was a Moline girl -- Vida .  After she passed away - several years, he met and fell in love with Irene -- She was a wonderful lady.  I really don't know ifr she is still living or nt - I must call Eulilia Bird and ask her -- after Irene moved to Colorado we kept in touch - but in the past few years I have not heard from her.  Any YES  the card games were ALWAYS lots of fun at their beautiful home in the side of the hill.
