We have noticed in the Flint Hills Express there seems to always be news columns regarding the towns of Longton, Grenola, Moline and Elk Falls, but nothing seems to be in there from Howard. And we have also noticed that not very many people participate in posting on this forum.
How do you expect to keep this forum going, when you will not post any items to the boards :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Ah, Mrs. Morgan, the reason that we don't have any local friendly Howard news in the paper is because no one wants to take that responsibility to gather the news and get it to the paper. The paper will accept news by e-mail. The way that the Moline info gets in the paper is because Pat McAlister calls people to find out what has been going on in their lives. The Elk Falls writer lives next door to the cafe' and used to be the post master there, so she knows everyone and the Longton news, the many columns of Longton news, are done by people who are active in the town and get out to see people. We used to have Rose Leo who would gather the news and put in a column. Pauline Smith used to do the same thing. They are both gone. Pastor Robin Haines has tried to keep a column going, but he is so busy that he meets himself coming and going. That is the way that I see the situation. I am as guilty as anyone about not sharing anything with the newspaper, but then again, maybe I just don't want everyone knowing what is going on with me and my family. There ya go. My opinion.
O-k-a-yy. ;D The reason we subscribe to the Flint Hills Express is because we live about 35 miles away and like to keep up with the happenings around Howard. What we are interested in would be newsworthy items, not the local gossip. Both of us are originally from the Howard area.
Didn't mean to step on anyone's toes.
I think you're NOT stepping on any toes - just our lazy bones - ;).
I'm as guilty as all the rest.
I do send some school articles into the paper, so the ones about music are often from me. I definitely don't send everything I could.
But even on this forum, I'm more of a lurker than a poster. ::) I like to read more than I like to type? ???
I also feel uneasy posting about other people, even when what they do is public information, and I can't imagine anyone wanting to know who I visit, etc.
What we would like to see in the paper or on this forum in the General category are items relating to accidents that happen, fires that have occurred, updates on road construction/road closings, business news, etc. We think there has been a misunderstanding of what we were trying to say.
We were not talking about personal lives, like who visited who. We are not the world's best communicators.
For example: We were disappointed not to see anything in the newspaper or this forum about one of the doctors leaving the Bluestem Clinic. That would have been the kind of news item that we were talking about. We had seen an article in the online edition of the Eureka Herald about six weeks ago, where a doctor was leaving and relocating his practice in Fredonia. He was one of the doctor's that came to the Howard branch.
So then you're talking about things like the Doughnut Shop has been sold? ???
Shucks . . . I don't always know those details. :-\
Maybe someone else can post more information (hint, hint).
But I understand where you're coming from. I just don't know that stuff. Sorry. :(
That's what we had in mind. :) We would like to commend the person who did the write up on the Family Market.
It seems to us, that is about the only business news that we have read about recently. Unless we somehow missed it, I do not recall anything in the paper about Helms Tire business opening. We knew his business was to go in there, but knew nothing about it being open, until we happened to be in Howard one day and drove by.
Folks that live in the area, seem to take the news for granted without giving it much thought, but to those that aren't around every day to see or hear about the changes that are often made--we are out of touch, unless we can read about it from some media source.
Wishing everyone a super nice weekend! :) :) :) It's Friday!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D
I am from Louisiana i came deer hunting in howard when i was in high school, on mr. nichols farm right outside of howard he died and and the family sold it, i was wondering who bought it and maybe if there is anybody up there with some land that i could pay to let me come hunt on or lease some land to hunt on yall have a beautiful town i would appreciate any help on this matter
Deerhunter. I wrote you an e-mail and I also replied on the other thread.
As for the Howard Happenings... Well, I don't think you stepped on any toes.
I do believe that it is real hard to get people to talk and visit.. ( Unless it is gossip) and most towns have way too much of that going on .. this one included. ( I know that I am a whole lot leery on saying anything to anyone .. because in less than an hour the story is twisted ansd turned so much that I don't even know it was my story in the first place.. ::)
But if it is news and just stuff that you are wanting.. let me see............................
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.. tapping my chin and looking upward thinking.
Ok..
The Daylight Doughnut Shop did sell. Robert and Christina Cookon bought it and I believe that Young Mark Cookson ( their oldest son) will be working in there. Notihing is in stone yet, but they are considering expanding, so who knows how many extra donut customers there will be.
Since we are in the Old Farm Bureau office building which they also own ,and which is going to be (part of the expansion, Kjell and I are going to have to move our office to another location.
Right now we have not a clue as to where that will be. It is kinda exhausting because we just got all settled in here and it is a perfect spot for us work wise, but that's what happens when you only rent and you don't own.
So... we have the feelers out and our ears open for any small single office space that can hold 2 desks and a couple computers and 2 worn out tired people.. LOL
David Helms has a wonderful tire service. I called him awhile back as someone had come by the house at night and stolen my water cooler out of the back of my truck and then left me a slashed tire. He was at my house in less than 15 minutes and had a new tire put on right there at the spot. And then in a great trusting gesture , he just left. I didn't even know it was done until I went out an hour or so later. I was thrilled with the service. So I immediately took him out a check for the amount I owed him and he was really busy in his shop with customers tires etc that had been brought in.
I had David at my house a lot when he was in high school as he and Danny were buddies. So to see him do so well makes my heart smile.
The Grocery store has their fresh meat market set up and let me tell you .. the meat that is coming from there is better than any that I have ever had. Last night we all got together and had big rib eye steaks fresh cut to order ..11/2 inches thick. Derek did the honors of cooking all of them and you could have cut them with a fork. The prices are excellent in that dept as well.
Is this the kind of news you want? LOL
My computer is now protected from 141,985 virus's.. and all my spyware etc has been updated.
Now is THAT for some added ground breaking news.. hahaha ;D
(Ohhh I DO crack myself up) ;D :D ;D
Thanks, Teresa!!
That is the kind of news we would like to see posted and in the newspaper.
Derek is on the City and Rural Volunteer Fire Dept and 2 days ago, they got called out to a fire that was started by Daryl Miller as he was cutting hay. This is the 3rd one that he has started and they have all been from the swather hitting a rock and it was so dry that it caught the field on fire.
Derek and Danny Signer said it was the hottest fire that they had ever had to fight.
That even the dirt would start to burn because it was so dry.
Maybe now since it rained , the fires will not start so easy.
But I bet in a week or so , we will be back to hot and crispy dry again. :'(
is that toos place still there i still remember that burger i ate there in 1999 it was great, and do yall still have the big ole deer up there?
I also have more questions than answers. And I'm not sure sometimes this is the appropriate place.
You know, where you ask . . . ."What happened to ???" and the answer is something that should NOT be broadcast.
In other words - what are we to do about rumors? ;)

If they are about Janet.... tell them. HA HA HA ;D
With us living out of town, sometimes the paper keeps us informed about Howard activitives.
Like this past week end with the festival. Is someone going to put who the winners in the parade were and if people had friends or family in for it? I thought there were several people in town that said they would write?
Also, why is there nothing in the paper about West Elk sports? The
Independence paper puts the game in.
Army Mom
You have just hit on one of my pet peeves. The only local news is whatever is sent in by good citizens sporadically. There might be a report of the results of the weekend I can't remember if there was last year or not. The sports is only what the coach submits and hasn't been the usual amount yet. I still have hopes. Since last week was homecoming, there will surely be a better account. There used to be a regular report of what the grades were doing, too. I am getting more local news from the Howard Forum than I do from the paper.
It is a big job to gather the news and report it. Rose Leo used to go around and gather the downtown news. Janet used to report any sheriff's happenings that could be made public, including fires and such. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I feel compelled to add my two cents worth. In a recent conversation with Marjean Jacobs, she told me that she has submitted a number of news items to the newspaper, only to have them shoved back a week or two, because there was not enough space to print them for the current week.
I noticed this last paper was awful thin, with a notice saying they didn't have enough room to print all the articles that were submitted. ??? ??? We wondered just "what is going on here?" :-\ :-\They have also taken out the church directory, but yet they had a HUGE ad saying the newspaper was going online in late autumn. Comments, anyone?
:-X I can't say anything.
I promised to be nice...
Soooooo... on this topic, I best be quiet.
But .........................................
What is wrong with adding another piece of paper??!!
Maybe having a little bigger newspaper??
Guess THAT is not an option.
Ok...
NOW.. I will be quiet. :-[

I'm doing what I can :) I sent in the picture of the house that burned, along with a picture of the area Lions club cleaning up some of the vandalism.
I didn't go to the parade, so I don't know who the winners are.
I'd send in more stuff, but the paper has this silly rule about putting in the names of the writer and/or the photographer. ;) I don't,
don't, don't
don't want or need my name in the paper, so I don't send in as much as I could.
And . . .
QuoteAlso, why is there nothing in the paper about West Elk sports?
I've been told only the school officials and/or the coaches are to put the sports in the paper.
FYI - the Patriots won big time Friday night. I didn't go to the game, but they trounced Lyndon. Nice win.

They have also taken out the church directory
This was taken out by request, from what I've heard from some of the ministers because of the inaccuracies. I'm working on getting an updated list of ministers and churches and times and submitting it. That won't make it for this week's paper, but if I get it typed up this week, it might be in next week's paper.
I really don't know, but the possiblity could be due to the rising costs of paper and printing expenses. I know that is the reason Good News gave us (we used to be the truckers for them) for cutting back our route about two years ago, along with the excessive gas prices. But again, I would like to stress, that could only be the possibility of why the paper is so thin.
But what I do not understand is why such a big ad about going online, when he had news items that could have been printed, why two or three write ups from Longton, and why not publish the museum notes from Grenola just once a month? Guess me jus' too dumb.......me no savvy.
Now that you mention it, why is there room for 2 or 3 columns from Longton, but not room for NEWS from Howard? Would more Letters to the Editor do any good? I am thinking if the paper doesn't improve, I might consider not resubscribing. As I said, I am getting more news from the Forum than I am from the newspaper.
A bigger paper would cost us more, but I for one am willing to pay more for local news. I can't help comparing today's paper with what used to be. The Howard Courant-Citizen carried information about what was happening, along with school news, school schedules, etc. you name it, they carried it. But then the Howard Courant-Citizen was locally owned.
Unless the newspaper changes drastically in the next few months, we have already decided not to renew our subscription. It's like you've already stated.........there is more news to be found on the Howard Forum. Why not make the Howard Forum the No. 1 news source for the Howard area? Anyone can put their news on it, and at any time, no limits on length, no "stupid" rules, etc..
I don't remember seeing an ad for putting the paper online, but I am sure that if he does put it online, it is going to cost you to subscribe to it then. One reason there isn't much Howard news, (and I have already said this), is because no one wants to be in charge of getting the news. I'm sure that he doesn't have enough help to do all the typesetting etc. That's why the like to get the news by e-mails because they don't have to do anything to it. As for the news about wrecks, ambulance runs, the fire, things like that, you have to have a sheriff that actually cares about the community to submit the news. That is something that we don't have here and I'm not saying that just because I am not the sheriff any longer. I'm saying that because it is the truth.
You mean to say that you missed seeing that big ad? I've already put that paper in File #13, or I'd tell you what page it was on. It gave the URL for the coming website. If I remember right the ad said something about "coming soon"..........
I still have the paper so I looked. It's on page three. My thoughts are this, if he puts it online and doesn't charge to subscribe, I'll quit paying 75 cents every week for it. Now take the Homecoming ad. I used to pay $15.00, I think, just to have my name on there. He had 29 names. 29 X 15 = $435.00. He took in $435.00 just for that page and it wasn't a full page. Now, the names could have cost $10.00 a name, so that would have been $290.00. I just can't remember what they used to charge. Now days, I don't even get asked. I can't explain why his ad was so big. We will just have to wait and see what happens. Rudy Taylor has always been good to me, so it is hard to watch this paper sorta of go downhill.
I wouldn't mind reading an account of Friday's game. I hear it was a good game and if someone wanted to write it up for the Forum, who could object?
Let me look on the WEst Elk page and see if there is one. If there is, I'll copy it and put it on the forum.
Sorry. The last game on the WEst Elk page is for the September 1 game. They are way behind. I already threw away the Sunday paper for Independence. However; if we still have the Sunday paper at work, I'll post it tomorrow.
I think all of us should call and talk to the editor and let him know just how displeased we are. I am sure if enough of us call they will take notice. Can some one get me the telephone # and I will be the first to call.
Army Mom
The telephone number is 620 725-3176.

I just saw some fresh news. The Donut shop has expanded its menu during the week and extended its hours to have a small lunch menu. I know that there is homeade soup and fresh salads and I don't know what else.
I will be in charge of posting the soup of the day and additional menu items. I hope not to forget ???
YEAH. YEAH. YEAH. YEAH. THAT SOUNDS SO GOOD. Will that happen on Saturdays, also?
See what happens when you answer a post before you read everything on this forum. I asked if they were going to have the soup lunch on Saturday and on the other post, Snakehater has the hours of the new lunches. I probably won't ever be able to try them cause I have to work out of town. :'( :'( :'( :'(
Maybe Jim can go up and get you some .. take it home and you can have it for supper. ;)
I would get some for you... but you have been so mean to me lately that I don't trust myself with a bowl of soup that you are going to eat..
((snickering))
I might have to add some stuff to it.
I wonder if you can taste unflavored x-lax..? ((ROTFL.. ;D :D :) ))
I'm juuuusssst kidding... So don't run to your mama and tattle on me.. :P
Army Mom:
Did you make that call? If you did, what kind of answers did you get?
Well, if I ate that soup, I wouldn't be as full of you know what like you are.   ;D ;D ;D :-* :-* :-*
GASP!!! :o :o :o
Yeah. Right. GASP :o :o :o
I have the telephone number and I have emailed but have not heard back. He probably is to busy getting the news from Moline and Longton. As soon as I hear something I will let everyone know.
Thanks
Army Mom
Teresa, you could write a little column with your eyes closed! why don't YOU GIVE IT A TRY?
I actually don't think I have the time to devote to it.
I help write newsletters for Down Range TV and Cas City, plus all the writings in between..
If it didn't take too much regular weekly writing, I might be able to squeeze it in.. but it would be iffy.
You can solve the school news problem, by putting it in the superintendents contract that he is
responsible for getting so much school news. Honor roll would be good too. Complain to your school board. We can complain all we want to, but it won't do a bit of good if you don"t complain to the right people!
Put the school boards telephone numbers, and ask your loyal group to make calls!
I know that everybody is busy with their lives. But why not email all the information to one person and then that person in turn email it to the newpaper? I am sure it is a chore to do but I think they rotate the towns so maybe it would be just a once month thing?
