Title: What words Do you constantly misspell?
Post by: lola330 on September 04, 2008, 08:44:19 PM
From Teresa:
This Threads was originally started by Wilma.. but because the thread about the Football schedule in the announcement section was so screwed up and off topic.. I had to separate and move EACH POST to another place and then try to merge them all in order and it turned into a hell of a mess.. sooooo, consequently it is loaded with defugalties. The hour is late.. I am way past tired and my patience is shot.. so it is what it is..
Hope anyone coming in to the middle of the movie can figure it out.. if not.. .......................
The I will use a term my Grandma Workman always used.
"PLUT!! Who cares".

Now back to lola's post.........
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Over the past few days there have been a few finger-waggers on this forum chastising the way people post.  I don't like when someone gets all righteous and wags their finger at me, and I try not to do that to others.  However, when kids are involved I'm not going to stay quiet, so bear with me.
I don't know who this bowie boy is but I get the idea he's attends West Elk.
He's a kid for cripes sake.  Quit taking shots at him and at other kids on this forum.  It's not just this person, I've seen several posts over time that the main objective is to point out a grammatical or spelling error.  Set a better example.  If you don't understand the post due to misspelled words or lower case letters ask for clarification.  Or just go on by, don't respond.   Play nice.
What is wrong with just saying "Thank you for the information, bowie boy.  See you there!" ?
BTW, I have seen a few posts here in all caps, which on the internet is equal to yelling.  I've never seen you correct an adult.  Maybe you have and I've just missed it.  I have seen some humor when something was misspelled (ie.: Gid ).
<------------------------------------------Getting off my soapbox now.    ;D
Doggone it!  I hate when I go around sounding like my own mother!  Makes me all gritchy.  Sorry to all of you who read this and it did not apply to.
Harmless banter.
I pick on everybody.
I know who bowie boy is.  I know where he lives.  I know where all the dead pigs are buried.
If you hand in math paper and it has grammatical errors on it isn't it the math teacher that should point this out?
Why shouldn't we address the problem before the youth of the area become stupid spelling error posting adults? Obviously we are spending way to much time at the schoolboard meetings trying to figure out how to find more money for the next budget year than to teach our kids the simplest tasks like tipeing and spillin' and speaking your mind.
I don't pick on people that I don't like.
What is gritchy.   Isn't there a cream or ointment for that.   It sounds serious and you should have it looked at in the early stages before it festers.
PEP, you need to lighen up!!  I know who Bowie Boy is too!!  I know where they bury all the dead pigs, too.  I smell them occassionally at night, too.  I think what lola was trying to say was be a little nicer.  I know why You and I are giving him a hard time, I guess if she knew him she would, too.  Be nice to lola, she was just statin a point!!  I understand you, also.  If they can't spell it right they can't pronounce it right.  PEP isn't trying to  be mean lola, if you know him that is just the way that he is.  He is very, very straight forward.  Doesn't bother me, but its nice to try and get him on his RANT!!!!
I have to say, when I was doing my student teaching.  I had a special instructor, because the ones from Newman didn't want to come out this far.  I did my student teaching in Sedan.  I had a instructor from Southwestern in Winfield.  He told me up front that he would listen to they way that I talked also, not only the lessons that I taught.  He told me that you can't teach if you can't speak.  I had to inturn, listen to the way that I pronounced words much better.  He helped me alot.  I think this is the case in turn that PEP is speaking of.  If you can't spell it right you can't say it right!!
Ok, rant OFF!!!!
You're right, Angie.  I hadn't thought of it in that way, but if you can't spell it right, you can't pronounce it right.  This is why spelling is so important and making it a habit to spell it right, makes it easier.  Of course, this is true in everything.  Make it a habit to do it right and it will be easier to do it right.
Even Wilma who is highly proficient at grammar and spelling makes mistakes. That doesn't mean that she is not right. Spelling and grammar are important. It is less of an issue in an informal setting, but you need to know how to write for a formal setting. Wilma I hope I don't offend you with this post. If I do let me have it.
You're right, Angie.  I hadn't thought of it in that way, but if you can't spell it right, it (typo) you can't pronounce it right. (English is well known for things being spelled differently than they are pronounced. That is why kids that got hooked on phonics are great readers and bad spellers) This {that} is why spelling is so important.(run on sentence). Making it a habit to spell it right, makes it easier.(too many "its" unclear sentence) Of course, this is true in (with)[/center] everything.  Make it a habit to do it right and it will be easier to do it right.(unclear too many "its"; run on sentence) (i.e. Make it a habit to spell correctly and spelling will be easier.)
Sometimes even the master writes in a casual manner. Listen to Wilma she is correct. Learn proper grammar and to spell correctly.
Thank you, David, for saying that I am highly proficient in spelling and grammar.  The spelling I can accept, but I must deny the grammar.  If anything, that was my worst subject in school.  What really daunts me on this Forum is the highly educated and intelligent people that are posting on it.  Sometimes it is a little hard to tell, though.
That was just an example of what happens when one types in a hurry and doesn't proofread sufficiently.  By the way, in the third sentence above, is worst right or should it be worse?
What do you say, Wilma, to a duel? The Harbrace College Handbook and Strunk's The Elements of Style at 10 paces? Even they don't agree on what is proper English. I am by no means an expert. I am a child of the 60's that was "hooked on phonics" resulting in poor spelling. In High School I was in AP English. I was lucky enough to have a family friend in college that was a very respected "English" college  text book author(Florence B. Nolte). She improved my abilities immensely, but old habits die hard in an informal environment. Again kids listen to Wilma.  :)
David
I say worst is correct.
I never learned the phonics method.  I learned by memorization.  Actually, my wonderful big sister taught me everything I needed to know before I started to school.
I know I have a bug about the importance of spelling.  If only the kids would realize it before they have a long term paper to hand in.  But, you know, with spell check, maybe it isn't so hard.
Title: Re: What words Do you constantly misspell?
A lot has been said about spelling lately and it got me to thinking.  There are words that I am not sure of and I look them up since we don't have spellcheck on this.  But there is one word that I always misspell.
What do I consistently misspell?  The word "misspell".  I always have to correct it and sometimes I have to look it up to be sure.  What do you consistently misspell?  There, I have spelled it right four times and wrong once.
With English spell check isn't enough. Spell check doesn't know the difference between there, their, they're. Still need to know how to spell. I am a good speller, but I also, know when something might be spelled incorrectly. I always have a dictionary on hand to verify any words that I am not sure of the correct spelling. I also, have  25+ year old copies of Harbrace College Handbook and The Elements of Style for those really formal papers.
The word "ninety" always goofs me up.  Somehow I usually think you drop the silent e and spell it "ninty", but then when I look at it and even look it up,  it's obviously wrong.  I do a double-take everytime I write it, though......
And how many years of college do you have?
Kids, listen to David.  He knows first hand how important spelling correctly is and how hard it is.  Also, how to say things in the best way possible.
Switch your internet browser from Microsoft Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox and you will have spell check. Plus it has less security issues than I.E. in my opinion. Did I misspell anything?
 Even in newspapers, magazines and big billboards I see errors.  The wrong word spelled correctly won't be picked up by spell check. In October we'll be judging fire prevention essays and I'm sure that once again, some papers with good ideas will be turned down for terrible spelling and grammar. We give a lot of leeway with commas because they can be so flexible in how they are used, but not knowing the difference between then and than, to and too, and they're, their and there does count.  Now we're starting to see text code in contest entries....ridiculous!  I tell kids if they have words they know they'll misspell, write them down correctly in a little notebook so they can check on them if they want to use them.   I know everything in life is more casual now and language is very flexible, but if everything is excused ( in school) as close enough, or  too much bother, where does it stop?
In a similar vein what do you say where your regional accent causes people to notice. For me the I  have a group of words that all come out the same and have wide differences in meanings. I blame it on my midwestern roots. How do you say these words. For me when I say them they are all the same.
Still    (used to make moonshine, uh I mean ethanol during my home beer and winemaking days.)
Steel  (that metal stuff we use to make cars from that we now get from China)
Still     (what your mom tells you to do when you move around too  much sit still)
When I say them they are all  stiyll
No, they are still (short i) and steel (long e)  Definitely a difference.
Is creek pronounced creek (long e) or crick?
Is route pronounced route  or root?
You mean forty isn't spelled fourty? :laugh: I have my own personal little list of spelling demons that I check, and I do use spell check (FireFox). Receipt, receive, recipe, it's and its, disagreeable, foreword, and auxiliary, are a few on my list.  Wilma, around here, a creek is still a creek and a route is a route, but Daddy used to say crick and ruff (roof) and greeze and zink for sink. David, your corn pone is showing. ;)
Wilma in my mind I say them differently. But what my friends on the west coast hear is exactly the same sound for each of the words. I did my best to phonetically spell what they say they hear me say. What do they know though? When I first came to California they thought I was from the South. If you are from the Midwest or South you know we sound nothing alike.
My dad from Wichita said root and crick. I said rout and creek.
I am the only person in my family that doesn't worsh my clothes.
We learned by phonics, but I think a love of reading had more to do with language than any method of learning to read. My dad used to read aloud in the evenings, either the Bible or the Book Of Mormon. Sometimes my mom would do the reading while dad cracked nuts under the rocker of the rocking chair. The family also sorted barrels of mixed hardware to resell after it was sorted while one parent read. We also listened to the radio a lot, and I was especially fond of the programs that read stories aloud. All of my teachers read to us, sometimes a book was read a chapter at a time like a soap opera. I was in heaven when they started letting us visit the school library. They even allowed us to bring home Who's Who In The Zoo, a very large book, but I loved that book with all the animals, and packed that thing all the long blocks home. My mom used to holler at me all the time ' get your nose out of that book and go do whatever it was she wanted'. That gives an idea how much I loved reading. I still love to read and read a lot, both on the nternet and books. The internet is like having the ultimate dictionary, I can get lost for hours by looking up just one thing. I used to do the same thing with a big dictionary, start with one word, and it goes from there. They should have dictionarys in doctors' offices rather than old magazines in my opinion. I do however find that some have a Bible and that does help.
lola330 in my case I was not referring to your post. I was referring to Wilma who is a champion of good spelling and grammar despite her claims as to her abilities. She and I have a small difference of opinion. I say posting on the forum is casual and grammar and spelling don't matter as long as your post is understandable. Wilma stresses the importance of spelling and good grammar in all situations. Kids listen to Wilma. Adults listen to lola330 don't pick on the kids.
SDM, I knew the story of Solomon and the baby. I went to look up more on him and saw the name David used many times in the info on Solomon. Here is part of what I found
David Hebrew: דָּוִד, Standard Dawid Tiberian Dāwîḏ, Arabic: داوود or داود, Dāwūd, "beloved"), was the second king of the united Kingdom of Israel according to the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. He is depicted as a righteous king—although not without fault—as well as an acclaimed warrior, musician and poet I like the highlighted part.
And who could ever forget David and Bathsheba, the woman who caused David to sin by having her husband placed in harms' way? I would call this an abuse of power. But back to Solomon who wrote some of the most beautiful passages in the Bible.
The words I use incorrectly most of the time and have to stop and think before I use them is except and accept.
I also misspell ( mispell / /misspell)  and anything with ie in it.. I want to turn it around sometimes..
I am constantly spelling the mans name  Michael... as Micheal.
There is plenty more and I will have to add to this list when I think of them.
I before e except after c or when sounded as "a" in neighbor and weigh.
OK, I know our Queen Bee Teresa tried to rearrange these posts so that they made sense.  All Hail The Queen    However, one of my responses was dangling where it didn't belong, so I moved it here.  I hope you can follow the thread, it's been totally rearranged and mixed with other threads.  The common theme is spelling.
Below is my copy and pasted response to pepelect and Angtown regarding picking on bowie boy's spelling.
Ang--thanks for the back up.   I disagree.  Kids who can't spell well, especially if they have made it all the way up to the high school, already know that they don't spell well.  My point is that this forum is not the place to critique spelling errors or have sarcastic comments to kids.  I know posting is difficult because it is so one-dimensional and emotions and facial expressions are lacking.  But knowing each other is no excuse for public belittling and sarcasm.  And maybe such joking comments are better received if you say them to someone's face, not on the internet. "Thanks for the information" is still the better answer.  "Ok, kid, get back to your school work and see ya at the game" is also a good answer.
And it's only humor if everyone can laugh about it.  Which despite bowie boys very funny signature line, I doubt he thinks pepelect's comment are funny.  And pepelect knows that this is a kid.  Are all kids fair game?  I think not.  I would stand up for angtown's kids and pepelect's kids too if an adult was being a bully to them.
And if you told me bowie boy's name (I'm not asking you to) then I probably know him too, so who he is doesn't matter to me.
I do know pepelect.   I think he is a funny, intelligent, sensitive, hard-working man who sometimes goes on apparent manic rants which are sometimes enlightening and sometimes confusing.  Maybe we ALL know him better than he thinks after reading his posts.  And I like him and I like reading his posts.  Just play nice with the kids is all I'm saying.
Gritchy doesn't need a cream, although it does sound mighty uncomfortable.  Grouchy and B**chy combined is gritchy.
And if a person has a learning disorder, it doesn't matter how you say it or spell it or write it or correct it.  It's not because they don't spell it correctly and therefore can't pronounce it correctly.   They just lack the ability to do it without a lot of remediation, accomodations, and adaptations.   Which do not happen posting online.
David, if you only knew how much I flinch and I can't help it, when I see something misspelled.  It's one of those addiction things.  I don't see how anyone can type away on this without a lot of typos and misspellings.  It takes time to correct errors, but fortunately I have the time.  What else do I have to do?  How some people can turn out such informative and entertaining items without going back and correcting, is beyond me.  Really, you don't want to try to read something just the way it comes from my fingers.  So, I will continue to proofread my posts so the rest of you can skim over them without taking a lot of time interpreting them.  That will give you more time to think about yours.
Wilma you are beginning to change my stance. Sometimes I am just too lazy , tired and in a hurry. It wouldn't hurt to slow down a little. You make some very good points. Old\bad habits die hard. I would never want my old family friend Florence Nolte to get a hold of my posts. I remember her correcting some of my 5000 word term papers and having more red proofreading marks than words. She also, made me give her old papers that I had received an "A" on and she would proofread them and have me redo the paper. Even though they would not be read ever again. You definitely are making me rethink my position.
Thanks for the hard work Teresa. The Marshall was right you shouldn't have had to moved it. Your "motherly" instincts took over and you did our chores for us. When we got off topic we should have done the dirty work ourselves. Thanks for being the "Queen Bee"
Wilma, you are speaking of the age of me, when you posted that.  Please !!!
Don't lump me in with that  train of thought.
  Jo
Jo, we are only the same age in actual years.  How you and Bonnie can be my age and be as active and alive as you are is beyond me.  Hope you never are as old as I feel.
I think I have found an exception to that rule of i before e "when sounded as a, as in neighbor or weigh".  It is leisure.  I pronounce it leesure, but should it be pronounced laysure?
It seems according to Websters that layshure was a correct pronunciation at one time. I would still say it is an exception to the rule in modern American English.
Oh, Heather, we just love to give you a hard time!  Because you take it so well!   8)
OK, here goes (now that I know you...)
Excellent job on your post.  Just a few spellings I saw...
"with out"  should be one word... "without"
I'm sure this was a type-o, "broughtup" should be separated... "brought up"
You also forgot your apostrophe in "wont"
Lastly, "their" should be "there".  This is a common misspelling.  3 spellings for the same sounding word:  there, their, and they're
There = a location  "let's go there"
Their = showing ownership "that is their car"
They're = They + Are  "They're going to the game"  (You can always check this by saying "They are going to the game" to make sure it makes sense.)
So..
They're going there to get their car.
Ha!   ;D
I always explained to my youngsters this way Tobina;
There is a place and it contains the word here which is also a place.
Their shows ownership and speaks of a person such as 'I', also in the word.
They're is a shortened version of they are, (a contraction).
It is amazing how many people do not know the difference between the words. English is supposed to be the most confusing language in the world, and I believe that!
If I make a mistake feel free to correct me although I'm to old to change now.  If I know what you mean I personally will not correct you. Have a nice day.
Heather, I am very proud of you for using the word "subtle" even though you misspelled it.  You spelled it the way it sounds and you used it correctly in the sentence.  Notice the correct spelling "subtle".  The "b" is silent.  This is a word that not many your age would use or know the meaning of, yet it was the best word for what you wanted to say.  Keep up the good work.
Ican't spell and I can't type and now my eyes are going fast!
And you think you have problems!
I learned in a life time of teaching first grade that the number
one reason for poor spelling was poor visual memory!
U already knew I had poor visual memory because I
couldn't draw anything unless I had a picture to llook  at!
Heather; how's this for subtle... I actually took the chance to jump on the there/their/they're situation b/c it's a very commonly misspelled word and I thought it might help some other people get it figured out, too!   ;)   ;)   ;)  Hee, hee!
I'd also like to echo that it's fun to have you on board with the forum and keep us oldies in line!
Hmmm--- here I thought she was trying to say suttle rather than subtle. Both have nearly the same meaning. Maybe suddle is newspeak/spell.  ;D ;D ;D
