Title: Billboard Howard
Post by: pepelect on July 24, 2008, 09:01:04 PM

PEP RULZ TOURSIM

Welcome to Howard

What would a sign on the highway bring to Howard?   I'm not talking about a wood and steel sign but a fancy glow in the dark tv screen on steroids that you can read from half way to Severy and Moline.

You could locate it up by 400 to bring people down the new and improved super slab.
You could put one in each of the communities.  Moline, Grenola, Longton, and Beyond.

Current events, school activities, Amber alerts, civil defense, new cars for sale, pumpkins 1/2 off, Monterreys, and corn sold out could be blasted by at 65mph to every rock truck not talking on a cell phone.  You could even sell advertising for the cost.

It would be nice know who is buying coffee for  the happy birthday and who got hitched before you pull in.

Imagine " Home of David Oakleaf's mom and dad "  with his picture 20' right beside.

Hot wings sale.  Please get them while they are hot.  Not just for donuts.

Is there a Amber alert contact or what is the problem with mixing civil with commericial?  If you use the commericial businesses to pay for it and every one utilizies it.   What is the down side?

***wiping the tears away from laughing so hard***

I do like the idea of  signs.... I don' know about the ones that are on steroids and take 400 people to erect though...

I wonder what something like that would cost?

I would be glad to help with the lettering.  I have some 12" stencils that could be used.

I doubt that the "corn" will be sold out as long as this forum is going.  There still seems to be plenty of it.

But Patrick has the right idea.  There is a need for more signs along the highway, advertising Howard and what it has to offer.  I am thinking specifically about a sign that says "Business District--______Blocks West" then lists the various businesses.  There used to be a sign that listed the churches in Howard.  I don't remember seeing it lately, either.  Is there a sign on Elk Street that points to the park and swimming pool and is there a sign that shows where to turn to reach the cemetery?  I seldom come in from the south so I don't know anymore.

Is there a sign at the high school that shows the upcoming events?

One of my customers builds those signs.  If it is a serious idea, I know he would sell me one at cost.  At least I think he would, as much money as I have saved the tight ass on shipping.  :P

Then do some cute "Burma Shave" type signs to lead people into town. You all have some great ideas, keep 'em comin'.

I am talking about an electronic sign.  The best thing about them is that they can be changed instantly.  As fast as you can type the sign could be changed.  No more advertising for the mud run three months after it is over.

More economic development:  We could have a radar gun tied to it to promote safe driving.  You are now driving 65.  Please pull to the side and write your own ticket put it in the box and don't forget to swipe your card and  :)have a nice day.

Want to know the ball game score.  Look on the billboard.  Want to find a new couch  look on the ads on the billboard.   Want to sell more newspapers......Advertise on board.

Only the in crowd come through town, so come on in.

There is no Hubble Rubble in Branson.  Why waste the gas.

Good ideas!  Now we need some people to be in charge of the project and start raising money for it!

I think we could just put this forum on a giant tv screen on the highway.   We would increase traffic and maybe cause a wreck now and again.

I promise to calm down.....a little

OK, I've been away from this forum for a while, but I was talking with Brother Dan and he said I ought to get back on and check out some of the stuff Patrick Edward was coming up with.  This is the first one I hit, but if the others are like this, good grief!!!  I thought I was the only one that came up with ideas that far "out of the box". :D

Charlie, your ability to think out of the box has always been to your advantage.  You've always been an 'idea man'!

Patrick,

Just spent the last hour going through the school changes postings.  I like your idea about motivating students by making them "top out the barn".  Didn't we always make Craig or David do that?   ;)

I looked in to sign prices only $10-15.........thousand.   The only draw back is size is limited by the distraction level the state dot determines.

I need more Topeka contacts... must network with dot.....

Would Greenwood or Butler county want to work with us?   We could use our infinite wisdom and underutilized wind and they could provide the rest.   What about a region of billboards that would simutaniously inform the entire area of what is up this weekend.

Isn't there a L.E.D. manufacturer in Chanute?

I must go shopping now......

Patrick, you never seize to amaze me. You have more energy than the ENERGIZER RABBIT. Howard and the area are most fortunate to have so many aggressive and energetic  young people.

They don't care... Nobody really likes me.   My talents are waisted on those who don't understand my keen wit and sarcasm.  It is hard to dumb down everything you say.

If you had a community sign on Highway 99 you could inform the local traffic of anything from amber alerts to the price of gas at Lannings.....

If you had a community sign on Highway 400 you could inform half the state of Kansas of anything that you want......

What if we talked to the cities of Severy and Sedan, Longton and Grenola, and Moline and Elk Falls to see if we could get a network or community signs that could be accessed for either emergency or advertising.....Community calendars, school events, directions to events, and a shared sense of community.

We should work together instead of against our neighbors......

Stay with us as we grow........

Yes!!!  A big sign on 400 pointing south, informing motorists of the fabulous things that can be found south on 99.

Young people??  I thought I saw a posting not long ago wishing Patrick a Happy 40th birthday.  Agressive like a rabid dog and as energetic as a Jack Russell terrier.  Interesting.

Careful Patrick you're burning brain cells and at your advanced age the mind will be the first thing to go.

A sign with "current" events would be a lovely idea.  Someone might actually look at and read it.  I only remember the 200 year old sign north of town that always advertised the Howard Fair from the year before.

I don't even think the old fair sign exists anymore.  :-\

Well, if we don't think the sign even exists, then it's obviously not a good enough sign to draw any attention to it!

(BTW, it is still there, right next to the fence at Dr. Black's clinic... I think some of the letters have fallen off or are crooked.)

Excellent idea Patrick, the only way the area will survive is if everyone works together for the good of the "whole".
