Oh, my goodness!  Didn't school just let out for the summer?  That just proves how old I'm getting. Time sure flies.  It's true though, our cicadas have started up, so school time must not be too far away.  Heather, just one month to do everything you  wanted to do this summer. Have you enjoyed your summer so far?

I am too old to text message.  I don't own a cell phone and I prefer that my phone be attached to a cord.  Did you know that cell phone messages are just as easily intercepted as radio messages?  Better be careful what you say.

Could we leave text messaging for the phones. Texting is teaching our children the incorrect way to spell words that are used in everyday writing. You can tell that by some of the replies on the forum and how bad the spelling is.
Now that I have posted this I hope I have everything spelled right.

Me-yowch!  Even this divine kitty has moments where there are words that get spelled incorrectly, due to being in such a dither when trying to type while thinking at the same time.  I think the kids can spell better than they're letting on...and I would suspect there are some adults who are deliberately spelling words in a funky fashion, just to throw the hounds off of the scent.  Now, that having been said, I also agree that texting seems to have created a truly wierd way to send messages.  I have not seen any studies done, though, that have related the use of texting to the degredation of students' abilities to write legibly.  Has anyone out there read anything regarding this?

I think that many of our school kids are bi-lingual.  Most can use at least marginally good grammar when it's required, and texting is completely different language.
I don't mean I like it (I can't even read half of it!) and I certainly think a majority have a lot left to learn about English; but texting is useful to them in their own little worlds.  I'm a little jealous that I don't know what they are saying, but there are things I know that they'll never understand either.

Also, if people are going to start texting here on the Forum, they should provide translations, IMO (in my opinion ) Maybe I've learned a little of it after all  ::)

Maybe if they want their posts read they could just use the good oldfashioned English, spelled correctly of course, so we old ones don't have to guess at what they mean.  It is beyond me to understand why anyone wants to be considered less than what they are.  I was taught to always do my best and to expect the best from others.  A bit of proofreading does wonders but isn't fool proof as proven by the errors that Flintauqua caught of mine.

How in the world do you get "that" from "7h47"?  Wouldn't it be easier to simply type "that"?  And why go to the trouble of "cR4zy" when "crazy" is easier to type?  If they can learn a language like that, then why not learn French or Spanish or any of the other foreign languages that might benefit them in the future?  You might include English with that.

For fun that's why. remeber pig latin? Just for fun, totally worthless too. I do think that the text messanging has a method behind the madness, for instance key numbers for letters and such. Code a little like license tags. With your own thread, they could text speak if they want. It might be interesting.

Its because of the keypad on the phone.  You have numerical pad. it takes less presses of the buton to use acronymns and the substitutions of numbers for lettres ect.

You can type much faster by doing it that way than to sit there and press number 6  times to get a O or number 7 3 times to get a T
The number 4 i don't get as the a is a number 2.

Kids also have their own code for im as well, for example POS means parents over shoulder which alerts the other person that someone is reading.
You have to really watch and do some learning to get into what the kids are using for language substitutions.
I learned it when my kids were teens.  They were rather sneaky at times.  But they failed to realize that I was smarter than they are :)

I remember the day when one of my sons told me i was old and feeble and he was strong and fast and that i couldn't whip him. I just smiled and said maybe so, but i have two things that you don't.

Age and Treachery!!!!!

OK, can anybody text a hundred words per minute?  Maybe actual words would be easier if they learned the correct way to type.  After all, even with a keyboard, when they get out in the real world, words are going to have to be spelled right, numbers are going to have to be input correctly, so why not start now.  And if they have something to say that their parents can't read, there is something wrong with what they are doing or something wrong with the parents.  As for texting over a telephone, what's the point?  If you can't speak to them, you can leave a voice message.  Go ahead, call me an old fogey, but there is a real world out there.

I do text quit a bit.  I don't know why but I do.  As for all the abbreviations, I don't know them so I type words out, even if they are long.  To me, if I can't understand it how can they.  My niece always text me with words that I don't know, so alot of the texts that I get I can't read from her.  But Dolphin and I do text some back and forth, but we pretty much type everything out.  Don't ask me why I like to text, I just do.  Weird????

I learned typing on a manual typewritier.  My school was a private school that was too poor to afford electric.

I learned on a manual.  My school didn't have electric typewriters, not even one.  My folks thought it was important enough to rent a typewriter for us to practice at home the first semester.  I didn't get an electric until I went to work for the lawyer at Moline.  It was sure nice, but I wouldn't trade my computer for any of them now.  It does everything I need and more than I am smart enough to do.

Yeah, texting is pretty foreign to me, too.  I pride myself on my spelling and grammar (now watch me mess up), and actually the spell check function on my computer irritates me b/c I find myself spelling the same word wrong over and over again instead of learning how to spell it right!
Also, texting confuses me b/c you can speak faster than you can type, anyway.  Why not call???
I do use IM on my computer, but I type in full sentences and with correct caps, too.  OK, so I may shorten a few things b/c is so much faster to type than because.   :P

The reason they text is because it is unique to their generation. Some shorthand, some resembles graffiti, some just their type of pig latin, some just for the speed of doing it ( think solving a Rubik's cube for speed once you know the pattern). The better you spell, write know grammar the better off you are. Texting and posting are casual and when you know the right way you can post the casual way.

All of this talk makes me think of something that is just one of life's truism's at some point in our life we will all say

" ohm my gosh!! I sound like my parents" I think that is something all generations can share and understand when you reach the right age.

Another reason people text is because it is private - no one can "listen" in on your conversation.  I do some texting mainly because it is how you communicate with teenagers.  I would prefer to pickup the phone and call them and for me that is quicker... but most of the teens will answer you right back with a text and it may takes days for them to call you.  If I don't understand one of the abbreviations, I just show them how stupid I am and ask...

L Hendricks you\I  are on the same page. In fact I prefer e-mail over any kind of communication except talking in person. Showing my age I also like to feel "hip" when I can communicate with the kids in their own language and preferred form of communication.

Personally, when kids are still learning grammar, spelling and punctuation rules, I like to see it practiced correctly, so the "right" way becomes stuck in your mind. Once it becomes a good habit, then you can play with spelling and language to make a point.
Simple plural words do not need apostrophes.  I never know why that is such a common error. Usually the most common use for the '  is to substitute for a missing letter....don't...or to show possession.... the cat's tail.  Common plurals don't need it....  things, texts, words, makes, phones,  but "I'm" is sure correct.
Spelling is another subject. You are always important,... give i the capital treatment, I , always.  Their, there and they're can be hard ones to get right also. Heather, here's a big hug for the school year.....  ~  squeeze ~  Go West Elk! Be sure and tell us about your first day.

Heather, you've got to be patient with us curmudgeons...it can be hard to remember what being young was like, after a certain point.  Then, there's those of us who never grew up, much to the disgust of everyone around us! (hehehehehehe)  I know I speak for a good many people on here who consider you a member of ths family, too...and a smart, funny, mature member, at that.  For only being 12, you certainly express yourself well...must be your momma's training coming through!  She's always been so fun! :-) Keep us 'posted' on how your beginning of your school year is going! ;-)

Just some info...
Independence Community College is holding some classes here in Howard at the High School.  The only one I'm familiar with is the Welding class which will be Wednesday nights at 6:30.  My nephew is signed up for that one.  They get college credit and get half off the tuition!  It's a great deal, and I think adults can do it too... however the first class is tomorrow night.

I believe that some of the other classes offered here in Howard are college English and Algebra (or maybe Calculus).  I'm happy that the school system is offering these~!  If you have any questions, Michelle Weber at the High School is coordinating the classes.

Ok then here's a crash course in cursory,

7=T (they look a little alike)
4=A (just add a line to the other side of the four)
0=O (I don't get why you can't just type "O")
5=S

So far that all I can think of.

Well, just FYI, I know what second base is too.  It's a white square between first and third on the opposite corner of home plate.   ;D see? I played some ball in my lifetime too. (Didn't know it had anything like that tho)

Hoo-ray Heather. It sounds like you are off to a great start for the school year. Now may I pick on your spelling? I don't mean text message spelling either. Remember to proof read your work at school where it matters. ;)

What is a Weh ElKKKK?  Is that a small subservient elk?  A bump, set, spike it, elk?  Maybe you should start with a fawn scrimmage after the high school VB's schooling.

BB...if you need to talk to someone, I'm here.  I've been a teacher for many, many years...if you need an impartial ear, I'm always here.  Sometimes it's easier to talk to someone you wouldn't know if you passed 'em on the street...and who wouldn't have the first idea of who to call in order to rat on you.
