Temperature was in the early 40s when we arose this morning.
It is 49 at noon.
I have a call in to Al Gore asking what happened to global warming.
It's no longer global warming.
Now it's "climate change."
With that terminology, Al Gore will always be right.
:-)
BAD weather cells will be surrounding us tonight and into the morning hours. Derek and Danny told me that this is the perfect conditions ( since 1976) for huge tornadoes.
Hopefully it will pass us with little or no wind. but the general census says "somethings gonna happen".
I'd rather be prepared than not. .
I went out ridin' earlier, and the wind about blew me off my dang horse. It's getting dark here now. I hope Billy gets home early. I hate being here alone with the "baby" during bad weather.
Well... :-\
just a heads up..
(dang you Tobina :( for making me have to post this) ;D ;D
All of us Cooksons are getting together for supper and playing Baggo and cards tonight.. sooooooo listen very carefully and make sure you know if the siren is a fire or a tornado.. LOL LOL
I'll make the daughter in laws go out and do a "go away bad stuff" dance.. lol
The Gods like the young ones better than us old hags out there stomping under the night sky.. LOL
((Ohhh I do crack myself up sometimes.) ;D ;D
I thought me hurting like I have been all day was due to me over working in my garden this morning and all that I did yesterday.
Well, after watching the weather and all that, I find that I must be predicting what is to come.
My arthritis has been running amok and I have been popping pills like crazy (ok, just what I am allowed, but more than I usually take)
Batten down the hatches. I hope it fizzles out before it gets here, but I am making plans to hide out, too.
God watch over you and me and keep us all safe.
Amen to that!
Stay away from windows and outside walls.
and if you are crouched down in an emergency situation.. grab something to put over you.. a sofa pillow off the divan.. a heavy blanket or something in case of falling objects . It might protect your body a little bit. Keep your phone with you too.
Stay safe you all. I've been watching your weather too.
We got lucky out here. Just lots of wind and rain. Rain guage was blown over by the wind, so I am unsure as to how much rain fell. The wind was terrible. It split an old tree at Chip and Nancy's house, and threw a large swing made of logs into the circle drive. Not any damage at our place since our trees are just babies. I brought my hummingbird feeders in, as well as my hanging plants. Neighbors had a truck pushed off of their driveway the other night when it stormed. (No damage to it.)
Today looks to be a much nicer day...No wind!!
good morning to all.
I just finished rehanging my outdoor stuff.
I didn't take down the hummingbird feeders, but I did move a potted tomato out of the weather and am happy
to say that I don't see any damage.
We did get 1 inch of rain here in Longton. Now that isn't official..........this was out of my rain gauge.......and
I haven't been out to see if limbs are down but here at housing all is calm
It seemed that after all the hype on television and warnings that the storm was fizzling out by the time it got to Longton. Praise the Lord!
Our firechief, Bruce Beem had been out in the firetruck and driving up one street and another and announcing to all that the storm was coming and when I heard and saw that I was just so proud of him for doing that.
Now for today..........it is just beginning and I don't think I have to do anything. Just hang out.
Have a good day, you all.......and God bless
It is indeed a beautiful day! We received nearly three inches of rain last night here in Moline. Our sump pump is still running in the cellar. The water table is high for sure. I was in Coffeeville yesterday, and all the ponds there are full to running over. I wonder if they are all holding their collective breath since the flooding last year. Enjoy!
I came in from Houston last evening. First of all, we were an hour late leaving (no crew--had to fly one in from Dallas). They did go ahead and board us after they started and cooled down the plane, but the pilots still had to go through their check routine). Anyway, that put us away behind time. They took us over by Little Rock and then into Tulsa---It was pretty rough coming down through that storm. Fortunately, most of the storm was south of us. The wind had blown all day, I guess, and it was blowing hard about11 when we got home. Fortunately, I don't think people here had much damage, or power loss, but the Tulsa area sure did. They have sure been hit hard this year--first the ice storm, and they have had several of these "wind and lightning storms) hit that area.

Well, Teresa, you got my hopes up... I thought you were going to invite us to join in the fun! But NO, you just wanted us to watch the skies for you! (wink)
I was in KC this week and make it home last night before the storms hit. But drive the speed limit I did NOT. I think I burned a 1/2 tank of gas from Beto Jct to Howard! Driving straight into the wind... and about 9.5 mph over the speed limit! I usually try and keep it a little lower (and been trying especially hard lately to help conserve gas), but I didn't care last night! I was gonna get HOME.
Luckily, where I was at in KC we didn't get bad storms. But it sounds like we weren't too far away from where they did have them!
Well we ate supper, but didn't play cards. ( Maybe that was why we didn't have a fire or tornado.. ) lol
. I fried chicken and had the fixin's and took to Dereks. We were all going to be here but Derek has a full cement top to bottom bomb shelter inside of his basement.. so we thought since the weather was as it was.. we should be at his house.
We all ended up setting out on the porch all night and watching it rain, visiting. Seemed when it started raining, the wind stopped blowing and all was clam. But it sure did rain. :o
Then Ashley came home with me and stayed the night so we could be up bright and early for our day of "shopping" ;)
Maybe with all the suggested changes on the forum, we should have suggested a whole separate category for Weather!
Tornadoes in North-Central Kansas last night, including Salina, Chapman, and Manhattan. Also, more east of there, too, but Wichita doesn't cover too much in that area.
Salina had a cabinet factory destroyed in the South part of the city. They were hit with 3 separate storms last night in a matter of 1.5 hours!
Chapman is 85% destroyed. Population of 1,300 (according to an old map I have laying around), so fairly small town. One woman killed there, and another person in Soldier.
Manhattan had the Waters True-Value store completely destroyed along Seth Childs road in SW Manhattan. Took the roof off a grade school on Anderson (about 2 blocks from my sister's house). Estimates of $20 million damages to K-State. Took the roof off of the Animal Science building, along with destroying the Wind Erosion Lab (that's kind of ironic). My sister said they had lots of debris and trash in their yard, including probably some metal from the True-Value store (although unfortunately no power tools or useful things).
Also, more sad news in Iowa/Nebraska. 4 Boy Scouts killed in a tornado that struck their camp.
My son lives in Manhattan. They live on the east side of town and didn't have damage, but his friend lost his house.
I think the first two pictures are the hardware store. The third is Chris' friend's house and the last is of the neighborhood there. Chris was pretty upset, he helped this guy move into his new home a year ago next week, and spent today trying to help him gather up what little they could find.
Howard has indeed been lucky this year that the "bad" storms so far have missed us. Last night's tornado is just horrible. Joanna, you probably know Megan Thornton from Eureka (Mary Ann's daughter). Megan and my granddaughter Cheyenne are good friends and Cheyenne tried this morning to get ahold of Megan who, with her sister, lives in Manhattan. Having no luck, called Mary Ann and she had been able to contact the girls. Megan and her sister lost everything they own, but they are okay. Seems their apt. complex was completely destroyed. Have no idea what part of Manhattan they lived in. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Hold on folks, it's gonna get bumpy. I just pulled up the radar for Piedmont and it shows the whole shebang headed right across Elk County. Hail insurance anyone?
dang, I expected to log on this morning and see all kinds of weather reports. My rain gauge has 4.75" in it and it only holds 5" so guess I better get another rain gauge to hold the excess. lol We were in Dexter at a granddaughter's ball game last night. Game was called after the 3rd inning of the second game because of lightening. But, we made it home before anything really hit.
Flo,
when I went out first thing this morning, I have 2 and a half inches in my gauge and it is still coming down.
It is just about done, tho...........and this was since midnight.
I slept well........not much lighting and the wind didn't cause a ruckus and except for the rain triggering my bladder, had a good night.
Of course, all this water is doing a number on my hips and knees, but I am alive and I am looking forward to the day.
I think Diane said she was going to be at the Longton cafe at noon, I am looking forward to meeting her.
If you are in town, ever, holler and I would love to meet you too.
With gas prices like they are, I am saving my car/gas for necessary trips.......and emergency's.
Have a good day,
Judy, we will see you at the Cafe about noon today.
Going back to the weather -
My brother lives in Cedar Rapids and my dad lives in a suburb.
Both their families are completely out of danger, except . . .
It's the downtown area of Cedar Rapids that is flooded. That means the businesses, etc. are out of commission. That will hurt the town more than anything else.
As we know, after a major flood it's a mess. But people will donate to families and give them clothes and food and shelter.
How do you donate to a business? Buy them equipment and inventory? What will they do.
One church, Presbyterian I think, thought it was safe, but then the sewer system was overloaded and their basement flooded with water coming up the drains, toilets, sinks, etc. They apparently had a couple of feet of water before church people thought to check.
Many city offices are also underwater.
I think I read 3 of the 4 water filtering plants are not working.
It is indeed a big mess.
we complain about 5 or 6 inches of rain. Don't know when we're well off, do we. :-\ I would imagine businesses have to rely solely on insurance coverage, but doubt it will cover even a minute of their losses, if any. We've checked on Laurie (Wilnerd), or my daughter has. She and her family are fine. Lynn couldn't get ahold of her and was concerned, but Carolyn finally did and reported back to me so I relayed on to Lynn. I've dumped 7 3/4" out of my rain gauge this week. Enough already ! ! ! ! !
Haven't made it through all the new threads yet, but hope this still is the place where I can post this. Video from Topeka station on the tornado in Manhattan. Interesting (and scary) footage, but nice to see since the Wichita stations just stopped covering it!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=sVtsI60ZqJE
Here's a link to a map of the damage in Manhattan:
http://www.ci.manhattan.ks.us/DocumentView.asp?DID=4547
My sister was 1-1/2 blocks South of the damage along Anderson. She still had pieces of insulation on her car this weekend when we met in Topeka for a family reunion! It looked like someone had TP'd her car with yellow TP!
LOTS of rain here today. Almost feels like it did last June when we got all the rain... like it could set in and rain for DAYS. But according to the radar, maybe just an hour more of rain and it might be done for a while.
Tobina, hope your sister was alright and had no injuries from the storm Thanks for posting the weather, I need to get off of politics and talk the weather, that is only between me, the weatherman and the Lord. Nothing to argue or get in trouble about. I keep saying I am going to get off of the forum for good but still like some of the discussions.

Please don't leave us!! There is some much other than politics that make the world go around and also to discuss!!!! :D
Hang in there Frank! :)
Just breathe......................................................nice and deep .....................................
I do a whole lot of that.. LOL ;)
Frank, yes, don't leave us. I had to quit Politics, too. I thought I should expand myself beyond the Coffee Shop and weather, but found that I enjoyed the forum much more when I kept out of Politics. You can expect to never find me running for an office, that's for sure! Plus, stirring it up on the school thread and trying to keep up with the gasoline thread is enough politikin' for me. Like I said in another thread... I'm a simple, linear thinker. At least on this forum. I have enough other stress to deal with at my real job, so I come here for enjoyment!
Thanks Tobina, I find I am hooked on the Forum as is my wife so I think we will be staying on it. There are so many good people on it and so much good information that I would miss. I need to avoid the politics and the radicals and enjoy the rest.
Frank
I learned at an early age to contain my thoughts on politics. My parents were a divided family when it came to election time but there was very little discussion. I'm sure they learned early the marriage was more important.
Good advice Alice, I remember your Mom and Dad pretty well and spent sometime with your Dad when he was working at my Folks' house, and I can't see either of them being a Democrat. They both believed in hard work and sure did'nt think the Government owed them a living.

Glad to hear that Frank, I enjoy you keeping us up to date on the oil futures and letting us know what is going on from an "insiders" perspective.
Thanks Dan, you do a very good job yourself of reporting the fires and also put some pretty good wisdom out there.

Is this your description of a democrat?
I assume you are joking
This is a picture of the Chapman Tornado .
Isn't that awful?
And my family wonders why I freak out when there is tornado's afoot. :o

What a great picture of one nature's most destructive forces.
Dale, we are seeing some of Nature's forces right now in Bartlesville.
Frank
Frank, I see it on the radar, we could use a few days of sunshine around here also.
Sunshine on the way. The sky west of me is blue.
Holy cow, Teresa. That is an amazing picture! Too close for comfort! Kind of like that video from K-State; you just feel like you're being swept up in the tornado!
Well , I got that from my sister and then I got this from Teri..( my daughter in law)
Chapman Ks tornado picture.
I have a friend at work that grew up there, and all his family is still there in town.
1. The tornado hit at 10:33 pm, so it's too light in this picture
2. My friend, nor his family, knows any of the items in this picture (grain bins, building, etc...)
This isn't the tornado that hit there.
Sooooooooooooooooooo..(in my Paul Harvey voice)
THAT is the REST of the story
Good Day~~
;D
Man! I think I would've been breakin camp before it got close enough for me get that good a picture! That is awesome! And whoever took it has some fair sized cohoneys lol
Well, either way, it's an amazing picture. I wish it would have been lighter in the K-State video, too, as it's hard to actually see the tornado and debris.
Nice weather here today, after this morning's thunder showers and WIND. Wish we could have an opportunity to dry out for a bit before the next round, but doesn't look too promising!
Here is how things can get changed on the internet. This really makes no difference, but I just received this photo in an email as being the storm that destroyed the boyscout camp in Iowa last week. It is an awesome photo no matter where it came from!
