Speaking of Fredonia, does anyone know if their historical museum/society is open to the public still. I never did hear if it was part of the flood last year. Stopping there to look through the stuff is on my list of things to do. My mother's family came from Pincknyville, IL in the 1870's and settled in Wilson Co.

1794: A stone discovered on a hillside southwest of Fredonia above the Fall River with this date carved into it gives evidence alluding to the presence of European explorers in the area.
I think it is in the Gold Dust Hotel on the east side of the square.
Roma Jean: do you know anything about how Pinckneyville got it's name? My father's given name was Pinckney and it was handed down in the family. I am wondering if there is any connection. His father was born in Illinois.
Pinckneyville is named for Charles Coatesworth Pinckney, a Revolutionary War hero.
Was he one of the Pinckney boys whose mother ran her father's plantation in addition to her husband's when he was away? I think both of the boys were active politicians. According to my 1969 World book Encyclopedia. Maybe I should just go look it up. Thanks anyway.
Interesting info. Pinckneyville is in Perry Co, IL. There seemed to be a lot going on in Perry Co Il or at least on both sides of my family.
Thomas Jefferson won the presidential election in 1800 against John Adams. Charles Coatesworth Pinckney was John Adams' running mate in that election.
