Title: Interesting Elk County Residents Deserving Recognition
Post by: Marcia Moore on August 26, 2007, 09:20:56 AM
I would like to see some posts on interesting and deserving Elk County residents (past or present) that are to be admired and whose lives would make good human interest stories either for the newspaper or for Larry Hatteberg.  For example, in the past Rose Nix Leo has been discussed on this forum, has been in the newspapers many times and was on Larry Hatteberg.  At present, I have two people to suggest.  If anyone can expand on these people, and/or have other people to suggest, please do so.  I would like to see this topic continue on and on and on...
MARGARET GRAGG -- She has done much for the community, i.e. contributions to the museum, past Howard mayor, big in many local organizations, longtime country school teacher, etc.  (Is she 91 years old now?)
IRENE BUFFALOW -- Now there is one hardworking, energetic lady that has always had a big smile on her face and a large wave for everyone.  She has always reminded me of Granny on the Beverly Hillbillies, because she is so energetic - always busy, busy, busy.  Tim says on the mail route he sees her mowing her large lawn, even all around her big pond.  She makes the best cinnamon apple jelly ever.  I have always admired her.  She always shows respect for the deceased by attending their funerals, which is something many people nowadays don't even bother to take the time to do.  (Is she 90 yet?) Myrna, please tell us more about your mother.
WALDO GRAY - Waldo, how about a story on your uncle?
Frank Winn, how about a story on your parents, their businesses, their large family, etc., etc.
Come on everyone.  Let's make this interesting!

Marcia, no, Mother isn't 90 yet!  She was 89 on June 22 this year.  I appreciate the nice things you said about her.  Yes, she has worked hard all of her life.

I think someone who really knew him could write some interesting tales on Waldo Gray, the barber.

The only time I ever spent any amount of time with him was when he told me about the flying saucers and that was only one evening.

I did not live around him and my knowledge is limited to him as an uncle who I saw perhaps two or three days a year--and even then usually only on visits to the barber shop.

Hazel Moore is an excellent choice.  I know she was an old country school teacher and is nearing 100 years of age, was raised in the Western Park area, and her house in Howard is pretty much all original inside.  I have heard someone stays with her now - who is that person?  Hazel is certainly a nice lady.  I don't think she ever married.

Danny Cookson would be a good one to be able to tell some stories on his grandpa Waldo.
He fished and hunted with him a a lot.
But understand that Waldo was a bit of a cusser.. so to tell a story without s.o.b or a few other choice words might lose the character of the story.. LOL

But I'm sure he could make them presentable..
I will ask him if he will do that.  :)
((notice I said "ask" and not nag .. ? Aren't I a good mother? LOL )))

I'm sure you are correct but I never heard him cuss.

Until, a week before he decided he could not make it to the barber shop. We were in the shop and no one else was there. It seemed as though people stopped coming in on a regular basis when it was determined he was rather bad off. He was trying to fix a clipper. He was apparently in a lot of pain, not having any luck with the fix, and began cussing a long blue streak.

The wife had never heard him swear and from time to time she still mentions that episode in the barber shop.

I'm not sure and MOM70X7 can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Hazel Moore just turned 90.  She came to church with the two women that lived with her and are pretty much considered her daughters.  Anyway, someone get in here and tell us how old Hazel Moore is.  I would love to see something on Margaret Gragg.  She is still teaching Sunday School to us.  She has five women in her class and boy do we have a grand time.

Hazel Moore turned 98 last week.  Her two nieces (Joyce and Carolyn Houser), whom she raised, were here to help her celebrate.  They live in Washington State and California.  They have hired a lady to live-in at Hazel's home to help her out.

Ta Ta, it gives me a warm feeling inside to see you get "corrected."  One might think
that two church services this morning would have given you needed correction
but apparently neither sermon "took."

But keep going anyway, Janet.

Don't you pay any attention to them TaTa...
I love you even if you aren't a "corrected person"..   :-*

Margaret Gragg turned 93 last March.  She and my Aunt Dorothy graduated in the same class and my aunt turned 92 in April.

I love it.  Ms. T, I know you love me.  Unconditional love.  The best there is.  And Rudy, I don't know if the sermons took or not.  We will see as I live my life day to day.  ha ha  Let's hope they did take.

I conducted an interview with Hazel for a report I did when I was a freshman in high school (1993).  I seriously doubt it still exists, but it would be interesting to see it.

I have so many fond memories of Hazel from my childhood.  She would make caramel corn balls for Halloween every year.  When you knocked on her door to Trick-or-Treat she would invite you in and ask you to sign your name to a logbook that she had kept for years and years.  She loved kids and it was easy to see that.

I know she is still alive, but I'm not sure how "with it" she is any more.  Does anyone have an update?

Hazel Moore's tradition for many, many years was to make popcorn balls every Halloween.  Since she had taught so many students in the Howard Public School and the Methodist Church, she had lots and lots of trick-or-treaters and always kept a log of those who came by on Halloween.  When I was young and her mother was still living, they would be making the popcorn balls fresh as the evening progressed. I can still smell the aroma from her kitchen of freshly popped popcorn!!  Since she has been unable to keep this tradition up, her niece in Washington has been preparing treat bags and FedExing them so she can greet all the trick-or-treaters.

I really doubt that she is up to an interview at this point.  She just turned 98, and although she is still fun to stop by and visit with, her memory is really slipping.  She is such an amazing lady and so special to so many.  Although she never married, she and her mother raised her sister's two girls from a very young age after the deaths of their parents and also several of her cousins after their mother died.  Their home was always open to anyone in need.  Many people in Howard cherish her as their 1st grade teacher, and I have fond memories of her as a wonderful lifelong neighbor.

When Danny and Derek would go to her house on Halloween she would always give them an "extra" popcorn ball and tell them that since Mark was too big to trick or treat , that this one was for him..  ;D
Even after the boys were grown, and she was still making popcorn balls, she would walk over to the store and come in the back door bringing a few for Mark and the boys.. ( she knew I couldn't eat them) so she would  bring me a bag of plain popcorn.
Bless her heart, she is a jewel among jewels...

I truly think it would be safe to say " I don't think there is a person alive that has met Hazel Moore that didn't love her".
She used to call me on the phone of an evening -- and honestly we would get so tickled at some of our "gossiping"..but definitely not maliciously -- just some little tidbits that we thought were funny.

Yes, Teresa, she surely is a Jewel Among Jewels.

Lester F. Winn, a progressive young farmer and stockman of Pleasant township, is a native of Kansas. He was born at Udall, Kans., November 14, 1897, and is a son of Samuel and Mary E. (Cox) Winn. Two children were born to Samuel and Mary E. Winn: Lester F., the subject of this sketch, and Roscoe, who resides at Rose Hill. By a former marriage, the father had four children: George, Anadarko, Okla.; Coleman, Anadarko, Okla.; Mrs. Pearl Davey, Mulvane, Kans.; and Myrtle Davey, Mulvane, Kans.
Lester F. Winn was reared at Rose Hill and educated in the public schools, and since he was fourteen years of age, has been actively engaged in farming, having had charge of the Eli Cox farm. He carries on general farming and stock raising and specializes in Holstein cattle.
Mr. Winn was united in marriage at Rose Hill, Kans., March 8, 1916, to Miss Genevieve Cox, of Rose Hill, a daughter of Elvin Cox, of Richland township. Although a young man, Mr. Winn is one of the substantial citizens of Pleasant township, and has won a reputation for getting results in whatever he undertakes. He is industrious and ambitious and his future bids fair to be a successful career.

Personally, I think it would be an interesting story and fitting tribute to bring together all these wonderful schoolteachers (Margaret Gragg, Hazel Moore, Juanita Anderson...and any others still living) for a news feature. The fact that all are of such "advanced" age would be noteworthy on its own, but it would be fun to get them all together to share their memories of teaching. I've not yet met Hazel or Margaret, but Juanita is a delightful lady. I've often thought it would be a good idea to ask Juanita about our home's early history, since she was one of the last four members of the church.

There must be something about the water here, or maybe it's genetics, but Elk County seems to have a very high percentage of "seniors" who are still very active. It's amazing how many folks in their 80s and 90s are still driving, doing yardwork, etc. It certainly gives us "youngsters" something to aspire to!

Also, remember that Agnes Miller and Buena Taylor also fit into that group of teachers.  I went to school to Juanita Anderson From 3rd grade to 8th grade.  She is a wonderful person and a was a great teacher!  I try to thank her every time I see her when we are up there.  Margaret is also a great teacher and a great person well deserving of being honored, as well as the others I have mentioned.

Another teacher who would make a wonderful story, even post mortem, is Leona Kinder.  I still have a world of respect for that woman...I really liked her irrascable husband, Pop, too.
