If the link doesn't work, just cut & paste it, or search eBay for Bird's Eye View of Howard, Kansas
ANYHOW, I'm not sure the picture is really Howard, but it's from 1930, so I don't have a good menory of that time ;D Since "Holton, Ks" is reverser printed on it, I thought it might be there, though he says the postmark is Howard.
I have a lot of pictures of Howard in the early days and I am pretty sure this picture is not of Howard, Kansas main street. I am also quite sure that Howard never had a Studebaker dealer.
Frank Winn
I noticed the vehicle in front of Studebaker garage was parallel parked--perhaps another clue.
I was trying to convince myself that was the corner of Washington and Wabash but not doing a good job of it.
Don't think this is Howard , either. Jody
Here is the photo in question
Nothing in that photo looks like Howard.
Just had Margaret Gragg over to the house
She said yes, it might be the corner of Wabash and Washington.
The Garage is where the Senior Center now is.
The sign on the garage says it services Studebakers, not necessarily is a dealer for them.
Margaret also said there did used to be a garage on that corner.
To the right of the turret there is a low building that looks like the service station currently on the NE corner
of Wabash and Washington. The roof is the same.
Margaret suggested talking to Glenn Miller - he would know what garages, etc., were in town then.
She was NOT certain, just said it could be that corner.
Well I wouldn't want to dispute my second grade teacher and a lifelong friend but I still don't think it is Howard.
Frank Winn
I, too, was stuck thinking I was looking to the South West at the corner of Wabash & Randolph. If I try to imagine looking North West at the corner of Wabash & Washington, it seems possible, with the turret being where the really old bank building is (must have been beautiful in it's day) ... As if they were standing on the water tower, taking a picture of the Cox building before it was built. Ha!
Does anyone else see the roof of the old gas station in the picture?
The gas station that is still standing on the corner?
If you look on the bottom right-hand corner of the picture, you can see a roof.
Yes, I can see it. And it is setting catty-corner to the intersection just as the old station sets. That is the only thing that looks familiar. The roofs in the foreground are similar to the buildings that were there.
The postcard is definately of Howard. I have other photos that confirm it.
I seen what appeared to be the service station right off the bat, but figured you all knew more about Howard's early days than I did.
Well Joanna, MOM 70X7, Marcia and Mrs Gragg (I knew better than to disagree with my favorite 2nd grade teacher), I guess I owe you an apology if that is Howard. The Garage would later been Ray Elledge Ford, I think it moved into that building from where Cliff Hitchcocks Western Auto was in later Years, at least that is what my notes show me from what Earl Garison told me about when he worked for Ray Elledge Ford in his years prior to starting the Allis Chalmers and later the Allis Chalmers and Dodge Plymouth dealership, after the Ford dealership moved down where the First National bank is now the Zellney or Zellner brothers (I should remenber that name better as Frank was my Scout Leader and he married the girl that lived across the street from my folks) had an M&M farm implement dealership in it. . The service station roof you referred to would have been Wucherpfenig's Soverign Service later Millard Cox's Apco. The Station or building across the street due West must have a big facelift after this picture was taken as it was the Sinclair Service Station, Carl Lauffer ran it in later years and Dr. Markeley had his vet clinic in it in the late 50's and 60's, there was a covered double drive with gas pumps on it in the 40s.
It is still hard to see that as Howard in 1930, it really changed in the next 20 years.
If I had known this was Howard I would have bid on that picture.
Frank Winn
Frank, I don't care if you do or don't bid, but the auction is still going for 6 more days. Maybe someone on the forum has something similar they could share with you though.
Joanna thank you, I will check out e-bay, I thought it had sold, THANKS AGAIN, I always like to add a picture of Howard to my collection.
FRANK
In 1948 the building on the corner that now houses the Senior Center was the offices of PCA bank and south of that was the M & M dealership that Tony Zellney owned, Frank was Tony's brother and I worked for Tony as his bookkeeper in 1948/49. Frank married Edith Stephens and they still live in Annapolis, Missouri. Edith is Bill Redmond's cousin and Bill and I were talking about Frank and Edith just last week. This picture does not look like Howard to me, but years ago, Ann Sloan gave me pictures of Howard and I gave them to the Benson Museum. As I have not been to the museum for quite some time, that would no doubt be the best "proof" of this picture. Also, the hills in the background do not look like Howard to me. Well, I just had to put in my 2 cents worth.
Jo, Frank and Gene Stephens were my boy scout leaders and they were great.
Frank
I wasn't even a twinkle in my daddy's eye.. so I have no way of even saying..
but if Marcia has other pictures that confirm it and Margret Gragg says it is so....thennnnnnnnnnnn..
I am standing on the yes side.. ;)
I believe that this photo is of the corner of Wabash and Washington in Howard. My family lived one block west of the intersection starting in the early 1940s, and there was a blacksmith shop between our house and the alley (where the curved roof building is shown) when I was young (50s and 60s). Mr. Sievers ran it. The white building across the alley was used for city storage, and the building on the corner was a gas station at that time. Carl Lauffer ran it at one time. Then John Markley had his veterinarian business there. My dad bought the blacksmith property and had the building torn down. Remnants of the foundation are still there. Mr. Sievers moved his blacksmith shop across the alley to the white building where Jerry Harrod eventually started his business. It was cleared out when the Cox Building was constructed.
Does any one know when those buildings on Wabash were built? I don't remember them looking Much different than they do now. There was even a dance place withthe group.
I still don't think this is a picture of Howard --- the roof of the little filling station that was owned and operated by Millard Cox, does look like the one that is now part of the museum, but Fred's great Uncle Frank Organ owned the hotel at that time, and it is now the trashed building "Heritage House" -- and there is NO building on that corner that is visible in this picture, AND the garage/filling station that Carl Lauffler ran had a drive access from southwest/northeast in front and there is none in this picture. Also -- the roof of the building that would have been the old bank building did not have that many elevation levels on it as I recall and still doesn't, does it?
The old bank building that is still there and the building to the south have different roof levels. The bank building is a little higher.
I think maybe someone needs to get to where this photo was taken (the water tower?) and take another one.
:)
Does anyone know what year the Heritage House was built?
Showed this to my parents and they think it might be Howard also, with the picture taken from the water tower.
my father wanted me to post this little bit of info for everyone
"Since I haven't seen mention of it, ... the "Forum" might be interested in the book Elk County - A narrative history of Elk County and its People.
Sponsored by the Elk County Historical Society, Printed by Josten's American Yearbook Company. Copyright 1979. Library of Congress Card No. 79-88252. I have the third printing dated 1995. The price then was $25.00. A good read for anyone interested in Elk County. Contains town histories, old photos/maps, and some family histories."
The picture below is from this book. It is used because it shows the water tower, where the picture on the post card might have been taken from.
The buildings in the early photo could have been totally rebuilt or remodeled between 1930 and the 40s and 50s. Also there were many big trees that are no longer present that may block the view of some structures. The trim on the building with the pointed roof makes me feel certain this is the Howard National Bank Building.
The newest post by geister2 is definitely the Howard National Bank Building at the southeast corner of Wabash and Washington. It is, however, not taken from the water tower. The water tower is visible in the background. It looks as if it was taken from the opposite corner of the intersection. This is a beautiful picture of a grand building. It is in such pitiful shape now. Very sad.
And that surely looks like the domed structure on the rooftop that you see in the other picture. Hard to tell, but they may have been taken from almost exactly opposite angles.
You are not going to get me to climb the water tower and take another picture. No way.
This is a portion of a photograph that was taken the same day the one on ebay was taken. From left to right – the old Howard Post Office building, a meat market, the building Waldo's Barber shop used to be in, the Smith and Goodwin building, the Barackman building, Allen's Drug Store, Allen's Cafe, and then the garage.
Studebaker has changed to Firestone.
Smith and Goodwin is a giveaway.
Looks like they parked parallel on both sides of the street and crosswise in the middle of the street.
I may be seeing things, too.
Well, if Marcia's photo is of Howard, so is the other one. They share the Firestone Garage, among other things.
I have taken that picture and turned the contrast up a little. Let's see if it will let me paste that monster in...
Nope, I had to cut the size in half. That may make the contrast thing a waste of time. How did Marcia paste that huge thing in here?
Well, now I shall give you my expert opinion ;D. Those two street scenes were taken by the same person from the same place with the same camera, probably one frame right after the other. They are the same photo slightly right or left of each other. The same truck is sitting in front of the garage in both photos, the same street lights are there, and the shadows, what little of them there are, (close to noon) are the same. If one is Howard, then the other is also. But you already knew that by now.
The Meat Market in this picture was my Dad's meat market.

Going once, going twice...
Howard it is!
:)
Does anyone have an old Howard picture that has THE TOGGERY in it?
They would have had to stand on the highest limb of a tree across the street from Hazel Moore's home, Jody, to get a picture of your Dad's Toggery. Ohh I loved to go in there and shop for turtle neck sweaters.
Jody, I will look through my pictures, if I find one I will send it to you. Your Dad always gave me lots of his PHILOSOPHICAL views on life.
Frank Winn
I just got off of the phone with Dorothy Perkins Tiffany and she says the Howard Hotel was built in 1908 and went on the tax rolls in 1909. I do not see the Hotel in the picture and it appears the picture was taken around 1930.
Frank
Frank.. if you find a picture of the Toggery, would you mind scanning and putting it on here?
Poor Jody has sent me things and my scanner and fax are just one jump from being used as firewood.. >:(
So I haven't been able to do anything like that for her.. :-\
The fax works part of the time and the scanner scans half.. (http://www.cascity.com/howard/animations/lamer.gif)
And this dang thing is only a year old!
If we use the US Mail, I would be pleased to handle scanning duties for anyone on the forum. I have a right proper photo scanner. If you would like me to do that for you, send me a message and I will get you my address. Teresa, that includes you.
Same day service. :)
Teresa, unfortunately we are packed to move and I can't get to any pictures or files that are packed. If I come up with one I will post it. Also I have a Fax and Scanners and will be glad to help in anyway I can.
Frank Winn
Where you moving to, Frankie?
Janet, between Tulsa and Bartlesville.
Yeah. You will be closer to home, then. It will be great to see you both as often as possible.
Thanks Janet, I can tell you it will be great to be closer to home, Howard and family and friends. I plan to continue marketing crude oil and Natural Gas on a limited basis. We will be close to the airport for travel, close to medical facilities and my birdogs are excited about the hunting prospects.
