Title: New Look to the "Home" page
Post by: Mom70x7 on August 04, 2007, 03:12:19 PM
It's very nice, easy to understand and clean looking.

Thanks!

Well, I'll say one thing about it. It makes it almost impossible to use the forum unless you set your browser window to be about 1100 pixels wide. Since I'm always doing about 11 things at once, I really don't want to take up my whole 1280 x 1024 screen with one application window. Maybe you could deal with that?

Edited in later:  The problem, by the way, is that you have the banner and the "Tell-a-friend" boxes on the top line together. The banner is 770 pixels wide and the tell-a-friend box is a couple of hundred, making the total too wide.

It is really not the  problem. The site has been changed to a fixed pixel width of 990 pixels.
This has become a standard on many multi media websites to make room for more content and easier navigation.
For most users this is not a problem. For those with 800x600 screens ..they will have to scroll sideways, and for those who want to have several windows open at the same time..will find this new format somewhat awkward.
But the majority will not find this to be a problem at all.
If you have bookmarks at the side of your screen.. you may have to take them off.
Most people like the larger screen format..It gives a better look to the page and doesn't clutter up everything.

Everything about this website is done free gratis.. there is no income made from any of the content or from any maintained web work that is continually done.
This site is also used as a "test site" as Kjell has stated before..
He has been burning the midnight oil testing and changing several things and making major changes to our other major sites.
And.....
The Elk County site reaps the benefits of that, so it is to everyone's advantage for the most part.

When you have something like this that involves so many people using it, it doesn't matter what you do...
you are never going to please everyone.... :-\
My apologies if it is an inconvenience to some.

So.... this will be the way it is.. :)

;D ;D ;D - and here I thought I had accidently clicked something to make it bigger and hoped I could do the same thing the next time I tuned in.  I like it and my screen shows the whole thing just fine.  I'm not a multi-tasker most of the time, so don't bother me one bit.
Title: Re: New Look to the "Home" page

I have seen it a few times elsewhere.  I just see it as annoying and not particularly good web design, since all the studies still say that half or more of the users in the world are still at 800 x 600. I never have seen the sense in throwing barriers in front of users. Usually, I just click by sites that are too wide to be easily used and don't go back. Either I'll get used to it or I won't.

All of my sites now are fluid width, usable from about 780 to infinity.

And, then, there's "me!"  I think it's great!  There's a lot of technical stuff I don't know, and sometimes, that's a "good thing!"  I am just amazed at how much you can do with this Forum.

Thanks.

We have no problem using this format and like it the way it is.  We do appreciate all the work that you do to keep it up and going properly.

I'm not a techie so I can't comment on that part of the new home page, but I do like it.

The photo of the courthouse tower broadens the scope of the forum a bit, rather than the Howard water tower.

I like!

I like it.  When I opened it up, I didn't have to sign in.  I thought that was great.  Anyway, it's just fine the way it is.

Evenin' ladies and gents!

Thanks for the comments on this thread and PMs.

I will not bore you with technical stuff to answer why we did this and why we didn't do that. If I did, most of you would fall asleep, me included.  :D

The simple truth is that this change was done to make it easier for "ME" to add some new features and do some upgrades in the months to come. Pure convenience for yours truly.  :P

At the same time, I accommodated those who wanted a better site menu and added it on top of the forum. Many users go right to the forum instead of the home page and did not see the link page, contact page, video page, etc.

Should have been done a looooong time ago. I just haven't had the time to do it.

We have also added a direct link to Flint Hills Express and I will explain that one. Flint Hills Express as a newspaper is about community building and in a much broader perspective than our small web community can produce. We are not in competition and there is a long list of reasons why we should compliment each other.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sorry, I don't like having to scroll from side to side. I will see about resetting the pixels, but not sure about it.

Here's a little hint to those of us who are non-technical.

I use my "return" key to keep the text within the message box. I assume it comes
through that way on the other end ... not sure. But that's what I did with this very message.
If I'm correct ... and it's entirely possible that I'm not ... you won't have to scroll right and
left to read it.

Kjell and Teresa, thank you for putting up this site which is entirely at your personal
expense. We pay nothing for it!

I must have the best of both worlds---a bigger screen and the knowledge to know what to do with it.  I like the format and it fits great....and if I want to go to something else, I just do it.  And I can multi-task also.  I am standing here in front of my computer with a broom and dusting off my desk and reading all at the same time!  ;D   What more could a person want?  Thank you for everything you do........You know that saying about a "gift horse."   Bless your talents.

I love everything about this forum.  I'm not into multi-tasking after 2:30 P.M. on weekdays unless it's being on here while the laundry is washing or supper is cooking.  Slow down and smell the roses.

HIP HIP HURRAH!!!!!!
I learned how to resize my pixels.

It is easy and hopefully it won't make anything else on my computer get crazy.
I can handle just so much "corn-fusion" with out my brain crashing..

Keep up the good work. You do a good job.

If you have not problems, that means you have a Macintosh!

(I say things like that to make techies like Kjell and Kermit mutter to themselves.)

I finally remembered to go back and do the research on the screen resolution of the average user. The numbers in my head were way, way old! Teresa and Kjell, I apologize, for I was certainly wrong. I went back and looked at the last 5,000 visitors to my sites and only 4.3% of them were using screen resolutions of 800 x 600 or smaller. One thing that does for me is allows me to make the width of my new blog about 950 pixels, which allows me to give a much better balance to the two columns.

Thanks!

:)

My memory may be faulty, but as I recall, the gecko was more like the kind that lick their eyes to provide moisture and he was more horizontial.  Then he bagan to make comments about the fact that he was a gecko, not Geico.  Soon they stopped with the eye licking.   Later there was a big campaign about how annoyed he was getting Geico phone calls.  Then he gave in and got hired to officially represent Geico.  It has been a very successful ad campaign because people LIKE TERESA care about that little critter.

I had a wonderful friend in California named Pat Lawyer. She was, in fact, born in Kansas. Pat, too, was built close to the ground. She did not drive, but she did shop, so she took the bus from her home to Hillsdale Mall and downtown San Carlos and Millbrae. I would occasionally see her sitting on a bus stop, and would always pick her up and take here where she was going.

But to see her sitting on a bus stop bench, with her butt on the seat and her feet a foot off the ground, was a sight.

Tales of southeast Asia.

Once I went to my sock drawer and reached in and pulled out a pair of socks.

For some reason that morning I slammed the drawer shut. A small gecko was in the drawer and had climbed up to the edge as I pulled the socks out and I did not see him. The slamming drawer cut him into.

I was often awakened at night by a tremendous noise in the room. A gecko was barking (or whatever it was called). It was so loud, it filled the entire room and I could not detect where it came from--and it could come from anywhere--walls, ceiling, floor. Their feet are able to stick to anything.

I soon learned not to get excited and lived with it.

One night I was awakened by something running across my headboard. That was something I could not get used to.

Was it a genetic defect? I had a family of kids in school in the 60's like that. They also had 5 fingers, no opposing thumb. They had webbed toes. ( No, Kermit, NO. Down boy!)  As the kids grew up they had to go to crutches because of balance problems.
