Title: Name That Baby
Post by: dandymomma on July 13, 2007, 08:03:35 PM
My cousin Chrissie (clewis, Theresa's daughter) is having a baby boy.

They are having a hard time choosing names.

Their daughter's name is Corbyn Jade, and they want thier son's initials to be J. C.

So far, the name both she and her husband agree upon is Jaydon Cole, but Jaydon is such a popular name right now, she's hesitant to use it.

Can you help her think of some potential names???

don't know what the last name is, but Clark or Cory are  "c" middle names that would go with several of the suggestions and aren't names used a lot right now.  Kinda like Jason Cory  - modifying cause see that darla and I posted at the same time and she came up with Clark.  Surely out of all these suggestions, your cousin can get some ideas.  Might add I have a great-grandson named Jaden Lewis but the middle name is Lewis which was my late husband's name.

No Lewis' in Kansas. My relation is through Riggs - Taylor - Reynolds, as is my cousin's. She married into being a Lewis, but I'm not sure where thier line stems from. I believe most of his family is here in the Northwest.

Maybe she'll do more than just read the posts, and indulge us a little ;) (hint hint)

(I love you, Cuz)

The other night on the phone, Chrissie, you asked me what "J" names were in the family...

James (1842, 1872, 1861, 1869, 1883, 1888, 1931, 1950-ish)
Jeremiah (1830)
John (1810, 1822, 1859, 1877)
Johnny (1902)
Josiah (1882)
Joseph (1893)

Nothing too exciting there. I'm still trying to find my baby name book.

Oh,

I take back the note about no Lewis' on our side...

My Great Grandma, Flora Edith (Reynolds) Taylor's Aunt, Rose Reynolds, married a John H. Lewis.

Also, Flora's mother, Armilda (Mittie) Jane (Taylor) Reynolds had a second husband with the last name Lewis. Don't know anything else about that though.

BTW... Different lines of Taylors. Don't worry, I'm not my own grandma, or anything like that!!! LOL

These are all such great suggestions. I was just thinking of the name Jaren yesterday. My husband and I couldn't agree on our daughters name for the longest time, then finally he found Corbyn and it was an instant hit. I really appreciate all of you helping with this, we are still so undecided. We have until November 15th, so we have some time. Thanks again and please continue to post any names anyone can think of. I am even look at maybe using an A. J. as intitials just to open up the ideas for some other names. Take care.

We started out with the initial J for our 1st one, then my mother suggested we stay with J for the 2nd one.  So then we kept it for the 3rd one also, but when the 4th one came along we couldn't find a J we liked.  We were still undecided when she was born.  My husband asked the big sisters what we should name her and they said Teresa.  By the time he got it to me it had become Patricia so Patricia Jane she became.  Later I found out that there were 2 cousins Patricia Jane, his cousins.  Not the same last name, tho.  So we have a JJ, a JL, a JJ and a PJ.

She has pretty much dropped the A now.  Most people call her just Jimmie.  You just never heard the L, J and the other J. and I think they were all out of Severy schools when you went to work there.

Or you could just make one up. As annoying as I personally find it, there are a lot of folks that apparently draw a Scrabble hand and arrange the letters so you can almost pronounce them, then settle on that. Maybe toss in some odd punctuation, just for grins. Like, say, J'floom Cyw-quet. There ya go. J'floom Cyw-quet.

;D

My mother made up my sisters name, she was hoping for a boy to name him Arlin, but instead she had a girl. So she kept the Ar from Arlin and added lana,  so she was named Arlana.

PUL-E-E-E-SE! As a teacher who used to have to learn to pronounce and spell all those names, that break all the rules and ruin phonics....please don't. "Put together" names can be very pretty, I have a Doneen in the family. She would have been Donald, after her father, had she been a boy. But have a heart.

I really enjoy new names.  All of the old names had to be learned on how to be pronounce and spelled, just like today, one time or anohter.  That's what makes learning phonics fun......
Everyone would tell my parents that your daughters name is so beautiful, and then ask where did you find her name.  Of course she would tell them.. Her full name was Arlana Jo Arnel, who later passed away at the age of 17.  So when I had my first daughter I named her after my sister, but my daughters full name is Arlana Marie Walters .  And now there are lots of Arlana's  out there.  So people do have a heart, combined names is what makes each person so unique, unparalleled from each other.   Her name has been pronounced  Arlona instead of Arlaaaana/ Arlana.   Later my mother did finaly have a boy named Arlin, our only brother out of 7 kids.

But you didn't break the rules with any of that...it works fine. But if you spell it Arlooona, with three Os, and then insist its pronounced Arlana....then what?  I have had to make phone calls to people, when I had no idea how to decode their name. And I'm talking about Americans, who were very nasty when I stumbled over their name.   People from other countries obviously have different rules about spelling and pronuncation, but I expect they are consistant. Of course, everyone can be creative as they want and when the little boy's name is "Wyoming,"  that's fine.... but then don't tell me its pronounced "Bobby." I would really feel betrayed. I was responding to Frawg's comment about just seeming to toss some letters together with a few caps and apostrophies and calling it a name. How would you pronounce Hja'QuaMzl?

That's a very nice name. I think I accidentally angered DLD. I think she thought I was responding to her, when I was actually responding to something Frawg had said earlier. I think modern names are great, as long as I can figure out how to read them

In my early days of daycare I had a child whose surname was Book. Her parents thought they were being cute and named her Paige which by itself was not to bad but then they gave her the middle name of Ina but mispronounced it and proudly introduced the poor little girl as Paige "Inna" Book she was 7-9 when I knew her and endured a lot of teasing at school over her name.

This name is not unusual anymore, however the spelling is several different ways.  One humorous antidote I'll pass along.  I have a granddaughter named Cheyenne, which was not all that common when she was born.  My sister called shortly after Cheyenne's birth to ask what her name was and I told her Cheyenne Nicole.  She laughed, cause our step-mother had called to relay the news to her and told her that the baby's name was Commanche. Guess she thought "indian" and that's all she could come up with.  We, and her, had a good laugh afterwards.

Now that's funny! I hope DLD will forgive me....I did not mean those kinds of names. Dandymomma understands. Her example is exactly what I mean. I had a Da'Shone once. How would you pronounce that if you didn't already know?      Duh-shawn?   Duh-shown?    Nope, it was pronounced Dash-one! Nobody is ever going to read that child's name and ever get it right the first time. He better have a life- long good sense of humor.

I know of a family last name Lee.
I can't remember exactly the Three daughters' names but they were something like

Michelle Love Lee
Jessica Patient Lee
Corrine Sweet Lee

When they had their last child, a long anticipated boy, they gave him the name...
Michael Final Lee

Hi, Kevin. I think those are funny and cute, but nobody will ever have trouble reading those. People may wonder "why" but never ''how.'' As an American, would you name your son "Quantas?" There is really nothing wrong with the name, but you know for the rest of that child's life, the next sentence will always be, "you mean like the airline?" I just hate to see kids stuck with a name that someone will somehow be explaining or defending for their entire life. Now if it's a little girl and someone says, "oh what a beautiful name," you've hit the jackpot. I had a Julip Benjamin once, fortunately they called him Ben.

Instead of all the odd names, it's great to hear one that good!

I guess that is sort of like the news. It often seems like the news is all bad and people are all horrible, according to the news media and a lot of entertainment media. Then you look around and find so many wonderful people, literally all around you. There is something wrong with that picture.

We need more news like your friend's name.

Hello!  My son, MaKennzi, googled his name and guess where it took him?  yes, to this website and unfortunately, had to read these extremely RUDE posts!  These are my 6 children that are all miracles from God!! Each one of my children are named after a precious family member-that NONE of you know.  So please keep your rude comments to yourself becauses you did hurt my kids' feelings-and you don't even know them!!!  They are very very good kids, and ALL of them love their unique names VERY much!!  I don't appreciate people like you-who want more positive and Happy news to degrade innocent children.  BTW, you forgot my oldest daughter, Mariah!!

I don't know that anyone was rude.  I can say that Yes your kids are going to have one heck of a time telling people how to spell their names.   Thats going to be a source of irritation one day for them if they don't realize how hard it is going to be for others.

You might want to prepare them for that!  Getting their feelings hurt, i assume they are young.  Well they will get used to the comments over time.  Cause they are going to get them.  I have a unusual name myself, which 95% of the people out there cannot spell it right even when i tell them how to spell it.

Bow, I'm sorry your son was offended by my post from several years ago. It was never intended to be rude or personal but just underscores the problems some names can cause. Every fall teachers have quite a time learning to pronounce and spell kid's names, especially first names. As far as keeping my opinions to myself.....Nope, not gonna happen. Go back and read the posts around that one and get a sense of what we were talking about.  Nobody was judging your child and you should tell him that.  By the way Mariah is a common name and a common spelling. I hope your son doesn't get teased by people asking where PaKennzi is.
