Title: Need some information............
Post by: Teresa on June 21, 2007, 10:14:41 AM
I got an e-mail from John D Apel.. and he ask me this:

Can you tell me the location and present owners of what was, in the first
half of the 1900's, the Marsh Encell Ranch northwest of Howard?

I'll tell him to keep an eye on the forum.. ( and I will also ask him to start posting..  :)  )

Teresa, when I worked at the co-op, there was a customer by the name of Skip Encell.  He died a few years ago. Not sure where he lived, but believe it was between here and piedmont somewhere.  Could he be a part of the family I wonder.

Marsh Arthur "Skip" Encell was born Nov. 12, 1927, the son of Charles Wood & Alice Wilma (Barnes) Encell.  He was a brother to Margaret Shelburn who lived at Howard.  (I think Shelburn was a mother-in-law to Knut Schaad, who lives in Howard.)
M.A. "Skip" Encell was killed on Saturday, July 1, 2000, while bush hogging next to a tree row on his farm approximately 6-1/2 miles northwest of Severy.  He was fatally injured when a tree limb hit him, pinning him on his tractor.  Tim Moore, who was delivering mail on the Severy rural route on Monday, July 3, 2000, found Encell dead on his tractor and notified authorities.
Though Skip had already bought his plot in the Piedmont Cemetery, he died intestate, and was buried in Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard.
Skip lived 5-1/2 miles west and two miles north of Severy. His physical address was 1075 30th Street; Severy, KS.  John Knotts purchased the property after Skip's death and has just recently sold it.

Tim said Skip Encell and his sister, Margaret Shelburn and their mother lived with the John Barnes family northwest of Howard while the children were growing up.  Ron Scott's place, northwest of Howard in Section 31, Township 28, Range 9, is the old Barnes place.  Skip Encell's mother was a sister to John Barnes, who was Lyle Barnes' dad.

Marcia, since Skip's name was Marsh, there has got to be a connection, don't you think?

The 1920 census has Marsh Encell age 50, living with wife, Maud 46, and 8 children:  Ellenor, 22; Charley, 19; Marsh, Jr., 17; Emma, 13; John P., 11; Nellie, 10; Margaret, 7; Thomas, 5.  Residence was in Union Center township.  Families listed near them were William and Ada Harrod; Charles Johnson; Oscar and Nellie Shipman; James and May Eaglin; Mary Shipman.  Some of these listings may be incorrect as the census-taker for that area that year had terrible handwriting and couldn't spell very well either.  I'm only guessing at some of the  names hoping they're ones I've heard of over the years relating to this area.  Is anyone familiar enough with that area to know about where these families lived?

This Marsh Encell listed in the 1920 census as the head of the household was a grandfather to Skip.

I had forgotten that both of Skip's grandfathers had lived northwest of Howard.  Knut Schaad may know where the Marsh Encell farm was located.  If not, he should know how to get in contact with Margaret Shelburn, and she would know where it was, as it was her grandfather's place.

What about Paul and Izola Moore --- Lynn Perkins -- Irene Keast  ????  All of them are from the Union Center District.

Lyle Barnes would probably know, too.  Also, Margaret Shelburn's granddaughter, Amanda Biering, lives at Severy.  She should know how to get in touch with Margaret.

Looking through some saved newspaper clippings I found this article.

A saved clipping dated April 1931

A big deal was made the past week when Albert Criger, Sr., became the owner of the Encell Ranch, consisting of 1080 acres, located on Elk River, about eight miles west of Howard.  Two hundred acres of this ranch is of the very richest of out bottom land and nicely situated.  Mr. Criger bought the land of the Kansas City Joint Stock Land Bank, and George Webster of this city made the sale.  The purchase price was $30,000, and at that price was a real bargain.

Now, didn't Albert Criger own land in the vicinity of  where Wayne and Irene Keast used to live?  Would that be 8 miles west of Howard?

Well, I don't think so, but it could have been.  If you go straight west of Howard, eight miles puts you clear out to Road 7 which is closer to Clear Creek then it is to Elk River.

If you go 5 miles straight, then 3 miles the way the crow flies, that puts you closer to where Bruce Eckland and Allen Cummings live.  Those are both by Elk River.

Why don't you ask Jim Criger???

It was Clad Criger I was thinking of.

It is true that Skip is buried at Howard, but he also has a grave marker in the Piedmont cemetery.  Beverly (Flock) (Peterson) Fuqua and her family had it put there, as Skip and Ralph Fuqua were good friends.

I was right!!  I was right!!  Visited with Neva at the Register of Deeds office this morning and she had already answered the question for somebody else.  The Encell Ranch was located west of Wayne and Irene Keast, just across the river west of them.  Was owned by Clad Criger for awhile and is now owned by a Kempton.

I appreciate all of the information which you have shared, as did those who attended the Marsh Encell Reunion in Wichita last weekend--not a large crowd, but grandchildren from Ohio, California and Kansas were among those attending.

Two additional questions--in what newspaper did the account of the 1931 Sale of the Encell Ranch appear?

Rumor has it that Marsh Encell Sr also operated a ranch south of Elk Falls known in the late 30's and 40's as the Mullendore Ranch, later identified as the Garvin Ranch.  Does anyone have any information on that item?

I know the location, just trying to verify if he did operate the ranch and details on dates.

Thank you for posting this information.  I am the son of John P. Encell and my brother and I have a disagreement about what year my father was born.  I believe this information clears it up.  Thank You.

I located the article again and there is no indication of what newspaper it is from but from the printing and looks I would say it is from the Howard newspaper.
