You know, I was doing some work on the Website tonight and noticed that the photo I have on the Howard page is of the Elk County Courthouse, which is actually someplace else. That doesn't seem quite right.
Maybe you all could suggest some pictures for the photo on that page. If there are a bunch of ideas, maybe we could use the forum polling option to vote on them. Maybe we could have a picture of the swimming pool, or an overall shot of downtown, or the water tower, or whatever you think.
If anybody has a good idea for a photo to represent Howard, maybe they could just load them into this topic so we can see them.
Did you change the picture already, because I don't see the courthouse on the Howard page.
And . . . the Elk County Courthouse is smack dab in the middle of Howard, just a block east of downtown. It's very much a part of Howard.
So, I'm confused! ???
Oh, no, Mom70x7, it is almost certainly me that is confused. The caption on the photo that I used says that it is the Elk County Courthouse in Howard. However, when I go back and look at the large version of that photo, it has a sign on the front of the building that is a hotel. So I am not all that sure I understand, either. Here is the larger version of the photo:

The page that used to accompany it is now missing. Is there a hotel that looks like that in Howard? Or maybe it was there and it is now gone? Either way, it is not a fitting photo to represent the folks I've met on this forum. Something both newer and livelier is in order!
This was the Metropolitan Hotel that is gone and the 1st National Bank sits on that property along with Signer's Garage.
OK, frawgie, in the Good Ole Days, on page 15, under Elk County Courthouse, there is a recent picture of the Elk County Courthouse, taken by Janet several years ago. That might be what you want and I think the courthouse would be representative of Elk County. Hope this helps.
Ah, okay. I'll let the university people (where the photo came from) know what the caption should be. That should be helpful.
Okay, we have one nomination for the Elk County Courthouse to be used for the Howard photo. Then again, what am I going to use for the Elk County photo?
;D
You may want to wait till Terrell & Lynn's wedding/party ~ there's bound to be some interesting pictures from that! ;)
I think a picture of the park down here on West Randolph would be really pretty (for the Howard city page), but it would look better with some folks enjoying a family gathering ~ if I'd thought of it at the time, there was a troop of boyscouts having a lunch stop there last weekend on their way to Scout Camp ~ it really looked cool.
I'm not much of a photographer, at my Mom's famiy reunion a couple weeks ago, I took 2 pictures with everyone's heads cut off ~ and it was a digital camera! But if I manage any Howard or Elk County "scenes" that look good, I'll post them here for you all to look at.
The park photo sounds like it would be a really excellent one, especially (as you say) if there were people frolicking (you don't get to use that word every day) when the photo was taken. That was a good idea, Joanna!
;D
OK so I may be jumping the gun here, but how about this one to represent Moline.
That is Moline for sure --- awesome picture !!!
Oh, my goodness, that's an outstanding photo and right onto the Moline page it will go. I'll try to get the page done tonight and I'll post a link.
Thanks!
I decided not to wait until later. ;D I built the page on Moline and it is up at:
http://www.genuinekansas.com/city_moline_kansas.htm (http://www.genuinekansas.com/city_moline_kansas.htm)
If you hover your mouse cursor over the picture of the bridge, you should see the words "Photo by kfclark of the Elk County Forum."
I'm a little confused. I think you said something about using the courthouse picture for the Howard page. You should use the courthouse for the Elk County page. Then find someone else for the Howard page. Did I get that completely confused?
Nope, Janet, I think you have that right and that at least you and I are in agreement. It does make more sense to use the Elk County Courthouse for the Elk County page (it is a really good photo, after all) and use something else for the Howard page. Maybe the Moline page jumping in there was a little confusing, but that worked out pretty well, I think, in the end. I still sort of like the idea about a photo of the park (especially if it has frolicking people, well frolicking legally and in good taste, of course, like dancing around the maypole, tra la) for the Howard page, but I'm surely willing to abide by whatever people think is best.
;D
Now Janet's photo of the Elk County Courthouse is the photo on the Elk County page at:
http://www.genuinekansas.com/county_elk_county_kansas.htm
and if you hover the mouse cursor over the photo you should be able to see Janet's name as photographer.
;D
How about one of the pictures of K. T. Oil Gas Station that is posted in the Coffee Shop forum under article of Pictures of Howard? I think it represents the small city of Howard very well.
Frawg --- beautiful pictures taken by our Local Talent and terrific web pages by you. Thanks -- very enjoyable and ipresented well.
One of the intersections such as Wabash and Randolph that shows the banks and Batson's or Wabash and Washington that shows the Cox building, etc. might be appropriate. I don't know if such photos exist but with the photographers we have here in town, I will bet one could be taken.
The swimming pool full of happy people would also be nice....I think.
There are a lot of good things in Howard. Could more than one photo be used?
I have been toying with making the photos rotate. I think I know how to do that. In addition, there will be a photo on each page of Tidbits and I can already see that there are going to be several of those. Of course, I could also put an album of photos at the bottom of the Howard page.
< ponder, ponder, ponder >
The rotation and the album would be good.
I will certainly take that under advisement.
Pictures are good. That's a lot of what the web was supposed to be about. It doesn't always seem to work out that way. Sometimes it seems like you can go for sixty pages in a row and see nothing but text. I don't have anything against text; heck, I'm a writer. But Web page after Web page without a picture is like miles and miles of Western Nebraska with no trees.
;D
I was born in Nebraska and don't feel bad poking fun at it. But I did think it was a bit harsh when a fellow I knew came back from a long drive in Nebraska and said he had finally figured out that the Nebraska state tree was the telephone pole.
Sorry, I'd have to agree with that guy. I've only been through Nebraska once, and through Wyoming too ~ Now THAT place seemed like a 4 hour drive through a rock quarry. Ugh. I think we must not have taken the scenic route!
You have to revise your feeling about what is scenic when you get to talking about the Dakotas. The Badlands have a wonderful sort of wild, spooky feeling that I have always imagined was a little like wandering around on Mars. As far as Nebraska is concerned, I had a business in Columbus, Ohio while I lived in San Francisco, and a number of similar arrangements in other places, so I did a lot of non-stop driving back and forth. I used the time to design in my head the software systems that I was building at the time. I totally, absolutely agree that the days spent driving across Nebraska on I-80 were the worst of any of those trips, and that counts the trips across Nevada.
