Mary Emmeline Underwood was born January 31, 1843, and passed out of this life in Elk Falls, Kansas, June 15, 1927, aged 84 years, 4 months and 15 days.
She was married to Willis Simmons June 30, 1864. To this union were born four children, all of whom are yet living; Mrs. W. M. Williams, and Oliver W. Simmons of Elk Falls, Kansas; Charles W. Simmons and Mrs. Ida Pepin of Enid, Oklahoma.
The family came to Elk County about forty eight years ago, and has resided in several different localities, including a few years in Oklahoma and a year in Douglas county, Illinois.
Mr. Simmons died near Elk Falls, November 23, 1901. Since his death, Mrs. Simmons has made her home with her children. She was a very industrious woman, looking well to her household. She was of quiet disposition, very much interested in the welfare of her children, and grandchildren. She was a kind friend and neighbor, and very highly esteemed by all who became acquainted with her.
Her illness was of short duration. She bore her suffering patiently. Death came as a relief to her weary frame, and she is at rest.
