How extreme is the Unions' control? In 1988 I worked in a medical clinic in Federal Way Washington, a suburb of the greater Seattle area. A black man started bring his aged mom in twice a week for IV chelation. He was a Boeing employee, had come up through the union ranks, and had been promoted into management. He was very proud of that, even though he freely admitted it had taken him twice as long to make the grade because he was black.
He managed a shop of about twenty workers. If a worker did not show up on time, He could reprimand or fire them. Workers had to sign out to leave their work stations for the restroom, a smoke break, or food. He could reprimand or fire them if they were not where they said they were going. BUT, if the worker stayed at his work station, climbed on the desk or assembly surface and slept, he could do nothing! Workers did not need to work. As long as they were at their work stations, the Unions protected them.
