Title: Yet More Supreme Court Stuff
Post by: W. Gray on February 17, 2016, 11:49:29 AM
Lincoln appointed five justices. One of those appointments was required because a fellow named Campbell resigned and went to the Confederacy.

The Supreme Court was based in Philadelphia until 1800 when it moved to Washington, DC along with the rest of the US government.

The shortest time served on the Supreme Court was Thomas Johnson who retired in 1793 after five months on the job.

The longest tenure on the Court was William O. Douglas who serviced 36.5 years.

After serving as President of the United States, William Howard Taft served eight years on the Supreme Court as the Chief Justice. Charles Hughes, who ran for President against Taft and lost, replaced Taft as the Chief Justice on the Supreme Court.

The justices sit in their hearings by their seniority with the Chief Justice in the center.

One Supreme Court justice has been impeached. That happened in 1805 but the Senate did not convict him.

The youngest justice to sit on the Supreme Court was 32. The oldest, 90.

One Supreme Court justice was born in Turkey.

If you have a sixth grade education and provided you have enough political pull for confirmation, you may sit on the Supreme Court. But, you could say the same for the presidency.
