Title: Howard to Moline on K-11
Post by: W. Gray on December 20, 2015, 10:32:12 AM
Mom70x7 mentioned previously that southbound K-99 once turned west at Washingtion Street and then turned again at Pine Street going south all the way through Howard and then on to Moline. This was the route through Howard until sometime in the early 50s. A lonely and long forgotten K-99 sunflower sign was on the corner of Pine and Washington for many years until being taken out sometime in the 1990s.

Below is a map of around 1925 showing the route from Howard to Moline. The long dark dashes signify a state highway. The highway is not marked but is the K-99, predecessor K-11. The road is not paved but is gravel. I dont have any information as to when the final K-99/K-11 change was made to conform to the present route from Howard to Moline.

Notice how what is now US 160 leaves Moline and heads for Elk Falls and then exits Elk Falls to the south of town.

Nothing is missing between panes three and four. The highway should be more aligned but seems to jump because of my scanning.

I also have a copy of that 1927 Elk County map.  I took it up to Topeka and had the KSHS scan it and add it to their digital domain.  The entire map can be found at:
