I'm watching all this on TV.  This is terrible.  It hit near Edmonds, Ok.  I hope Karen is okay.  I haven't seen anything about damage in Elk County although there was a tornado warning for Wichita.  I keep checking the Forum to see if anyone has any thing to say about it.  Take care, my friends.

TOPEKA, Kan. –  Authorities say tornadoes have touched down in Wichita, Kan., and a suburb of Oklahoma City but there are no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.

Sedgwick County, Kan., emergency management director Randy Duncan says officials are "very grateful" about the few reports of damage from the tornado that touched down near Wichita Mid-Continent Airport shortly before 4 p.m. CDT Sunday.

A tornado also reportedly grazed the Oklahoma City suburb of Edmond before heading toward a sparsely populated area. There were reports of debris but no injuries or traffic crashes.

The National Weather Service described the tornado as "large, violent and extremely dangerous" and said it was moving northeast at 30 mph.

The tornadoes are part of a large storm system moving through the Plains and upper Midwest.

The tornadoes came very close today, but bypassed our neighborhood by about 3 miles.  We did go to our shelter when the sirens sounded, though.  Edmond had some minimal damage compared to the surrounding areas of Shawnee, Carney, Little Axe, and other small towns.  Luckily it stayed in the clouds and didn't touch down on its venture through our area because its path would have devastated a heavily populated residential area and lots of businesses.  It's been a pretty quiet year for tornadoes here so far, but this may be the beginning of a rocky season.  Prayers to all those who have had so much damage and possible loss of life.  We will know more with the morning light.

Footage: Tornadoes Hit Plains, Midwest, Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa

Published on May 19, 2013
A powerful storm system rumbled through the Plains and upper Midwest on Sunday, spawning tornadoes that damaged homes and buildings near Oklahoma City and put the Tulsa area on high-alert.

There were no immediate reports of injuries caused by any of the tornadoes that touched down in Oklahoma and Kansas, including one that hit the Oklahoma City suburb of Edmond before moving northeast toward Tulsa, 90 miles to the northeast.

For days, forecasters had been warning about the possibility of tornadoes from a weekend storm, and emergency responders as far north as Minnesota and as far south as Texas were keeping a close eye on the powerful system pushing eastward and northward through the nation's breadbasket.

"I knew it was coming," said Randy Grau, who huddled with his wife and two young boys in their Edmond's home's safe room when the tornado hit. He said he peered out his window as the weather worsened and believed he saw a flock of birds heading down the street.

"Then I realized it was swirling debris. That's when we shut the door of the safe room, said Grau, adding that they sheltered in the room for 10 minutes.

In Wichita, Kan., a tornado touched down near Mid-Content Airport on the city's southwest side shortly before 4 p.m., knocking out power to 7,500 homes and businesses but bypassing the most populated areas of Kansas' biggest city.

"At this point, there are very few reports of damage and no reports of fatalities or injuries, and we're very grateful for that," said Sedgwick County Emergency Management Director Randy Duncan.

In Oklahoma, aerial television news footage showed homes that appeared to have suffered significant damage northeast of Oklahoma City. Some outbuildings appeared to have been leveled, and some homes' roofs or walls had been knocked down.

"When I first drove into the neighborhood, I didn't see any major damage until I pulled into the front of my house," said Csabe Mathe, of Edmond, who found a part of his neighbor's fence in his swimming pool. "My reaction was: I hope insurance pays for the cleaning."

"I typically have two trash cans, and now I have five in my driveway."

The Storm Prediction Center had been warning about severe weather in the region since Wednesday, and on Friday, it zeroed in on Sunday as the day the storm system would likely pass through.

"They've been calling for this all day," Edmond resident Anita Wright said after riding out the twister in an underground shelter. She and her husband Ed emerged from their hiding place to find uprooted trees, downed limbs and damaged gutters in their home.

In Katie Leathers' backyard, the family's trampoline was tossed through a section of fence and a giant tree uprooted.

"I saw all the trees waving, and that's when I grabbed everyone and got into two closets," Leathers said. "All these trees just snapped."

As far as I know, there was no tornado activity in Elk County.  There was a possible cell down by Dexter, in the system that moved through Elk County.  We did get a spurt of strong wind, some rain and some hail.  Right now there is something overhead that hasn't given us anything, but seems to be much worse off to the east.  I think that when this clears out, we will be cleared of anything until possibly tonight.

A monstrous tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma which is south of Oklahoma City, this afternoon about 3:15 p.m.  At least two schools were totally demolished, possibly with children still present, so please say a prayer for all those affected in that area.  There are literally thousands of houses and businesses destroyed, also, and no idea of how many and what types of injuries.  This is such a horrific situation.  Our son lives in north Norman, Oklahoma, just south of Moore, but his area was not directly affected.  What a sad day.............

Massive Tornado Kills 51 In Moore, Hits Elementary School

http://www.news9.com/story/22302745/shelters-open-in-okc-metro-for-those-affected-by-massive-tornado

Oklahoma City
http://www.news9.com/

MOORE, Oklahoma - A massive tornado that ripped across Moore Monday afternoon has killed at least 51 people. The twister wiped out neighborhoods, destroyed two schools and left dozens injured.

The state medical examiner confirmed the number of people killed, but there's no specific number on how many people have been injured.

The powerful tornado first touched down in Newcastle and churned toward Interstate 44 and S.W. 149th Street. It hit Plaza Towers Elementary School, which is northeast of S.W. 19th and Santa Fe. There are still reports of children and staff still trapped in the debris. Emergency workers are on the scene, searching through the debris. There are also unconfirmed reports children were killed at the school.

Crews are bringing cadaver dogs to search for children trapped under the rubbles.

The tornado also hit Briarwood Elementary School, destroying the building. Parents ran to the school, trying to make sure their children were all right. Firefighters and police raced to the scene to help rescue trapped students and staff.

A teacher told News 9's Karl Torp that students and staff took shelter before the storm struck in hallways and under their decks. There were some minor injuries but all students were accounted for.

News 9 confirmed three people were killed at 7-Eleven Store in Moore. There were also reports two children were killed in the tornado.

Between 300 and 400 students are trapped at Southmoore High School. They cannot leave because of the debris littering the roads.

Bob Mills SkyNews 9 flew over the affected areas and found homes and buildings that had been reduced to rubble. Footage also showed vehicles, power poles and debris littering Interstate 35 and side streets.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has shut down Interstate 35 both directions between Interstate 240 and Indian Hills Road.

The tornado also heavily damaged the Warren Theatre and destroyed neighboring businesses. Despite the damage, the theatre has been turned into a triage center.

News 9 meteorologists say the twister closely mimicked the path of the deadly tornado on May 3, 1999. That storm had the highest winds ever recorded near the earth's surface.

After hitting Moore, the tornado crossed Interstate 35 and continued its destructive path, but soon dissipated.

When it comes to tornadoes, I believe I get it. I've witnessed three firsthand, my brother was in the trailer park wiped out in Andover. He was smart enough to get to shelter, two of my other friends were killed. The other ones just destroyed buildings and crops.

The Tornado Titans got caught up in a tornado cluster in Oklahoma tonight...
A barn and large bale of hay flew right at the car.  They thought they were going to die!

WILD VIDEO—
Titans scream, "We're gonna die!!"

From the video: Brett and Brandon got extremely close to a violent tornadic circulation that produced multiple tornadoes in very close range... The team was hit by inflow jet winds into the tornado and their vehicle received damage as a barn was completely destroyed. A hay bale came barreling across the road and was tossed into their car.. The team is very fortunate to live to chase another day... Incredible storm chaser traffic prevented an escape from the tornado like normal.. There have been fatalities with this tornado.. The team's thoughts go out to those affected!

The Weather Channel Tornado Hunt Team was also shaken up after their chase vehicles took a direct hit by a violent tornado west of Oklahoma City

Frank Winn DOES live in Oklahoma in Bartlesville in the NE part of the state.

Here in the OKC area, it is a beautiful Saturday morning with cool temperatures and sunny skies, much different from our roller coaster night of tornadoes and flooding.  No damage at our home, and our kids are fine in their areas, too.  Others are not so fortunate............................

A star of the Discovery Channel show "Storm Chasers," his son and a colleague have been identified as three of the 13 people killed after an outbreak of tornadoes struck the Oklahoma City area on Friday.

Tim Samaras, 55, died with his son Paul, 24, and friend Carl Young, 45, in Canadian County chasing down a tornado that wreaked havoc along Interstate 40, Fox 25 reports.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Tim Samaras his son Paul and their colleague Carl Young," the Discovery Channel said in a statement to FOX411. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families."

The channel added that it would be dedicating Sunday night's show on the tornadoes in their memory.

Meanwhile, residents in Oklahoma cleaned up after the deadly storms as searches continued for more victims.

Searchers were still working Sunday to find seven missing people, including five children.

Deputy Fire Chief Marc Woodard says the missing are from two different areas in Oklahoma City and that all were swept away by flood waters.

The state Medical Examiner's Office confirmed to Fox News that the death toll had risen to 13 from Friday's EF3 tornado, which charged down a clogged Interstate 40 in the western suburbs. Among the dead were two children -- an infant sucked out of the car with its mother and a 4-year-old boy who along with his family had sought shelter in a drainage ditch.

Tim Samaras is a 20-year veteran of storm chasing and founded the project TWISTEX (Tactical Weather Instrumented Sampling in Tornadoes Experiment), which gathers weather information by placing devices in the way of tornadoes, Fox 17 reports.

In 2004, Tim Samaras dropped a probe into the path of an EF-4 tornado, where it measured a 100 millibar pressure drop -- a record that still stands today, the Discovery Channel's website says.

Since 2003, Tim Samaras, meteorologist Carl Young and their team have tracked down more than 125 tornadoes, according to Young's biography on Discovery Channel's website.

Samaras appeared for three seasons on the Discovery Channel show, Fox 17 reports.

"We were shocked and deeply saddened by the news that longtime National Geographic grantee Tim Samaras was killed," National Geographic Executive Vice President Terry Garcia said in a statement. "Tim was a courageous and brilliant scientist who fearlessly pursued tornadoes and lightning in the field in an effort to better understand these phenomena."

A total of five tornadoes swept through the Oklahoma City area on Friday, according to the Associated Press.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

'Storm Chasers' Star Tim Samaras, Son Paul Samaras And Carl Young Die In Oklahoma

Published on Jun 2, 2013
This video is NOT about condemning Tim Samaras and the [nine] others who died. Tim did incredible research on Tornadoes to help save lives and is a hero to many.
Questions need to be asked HOWEVER on why these 'chasers' died - and why several others had near death experiences. Why are
they putting themselves in such jeopardy? Offensive comments will be removed.
Thank you.  (youtube.com)

Former "Storm Chaser" star Tim Samaras, his son Paul Samaras, and colleague Carl Young died while chasing the Oklahoma storm on Friday, May 31.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Tim Samaras his son Paul and their colleague Carl Young. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families," Discovery Channel said in a statement.

Samaras' brother, Jim, posted a message on Samaras's official Facebook page. TheWeatherSpace.com reported on the trio's passing.

Discovery will dedicate the Sunday, June 2 special "Mile Wide Tornado: Oklahoma Disaster" to the trio's memory. They don't appear in the series, but the memorial card will read: "In memory of Tim Samaras, Carl Young and Paul Samaras who died Friday, May 31st doing what they love, chasing storms."

"Storm Chasers" aired for five seasons on Discovery Channel before ending in November 2011.
