Title: It's picking time
Post by: ddurbin on June 13, 2012, 11:19:16 AM
I've gathered about 5 qts of sand plums from a nearby patch with lots more still ripening.  Also notice some blackberries starting to ripen.  Anyone else out picking yet?

Picked some thiis past weekend in Elk County.
Also, two Blackberries.  Yummy.
Sand Plums grow on a bush.  Tiny orange red plum (when ripe) but packed wiith flavor.
Critters love them too.  Makes a terrific jelly but sweet eating too.

They grow wild in pastures, along roadsides, creeks, etc.  They bloom white early about the same time the redbuds are blooming.  Never get very tall unless you are a small child helping pick them.

Are your spots readily accessible to others?  Someone else may be beating you to them.  Also, deer, raccoons, crows and a buch of other critters like them too, so you may have them as your main competitors.
