Post by: farmgal67357 on July 07, 2011, 06:20:11 PM
What theater do you prefer? El Dorado is looking good. And they have a Chinese restaurant too. I am gonna miss our neighborhood Chinese joint! Peter makes the best banana sushi!

From where you're going to be located, it's just a short (relatively speaking, of course) drive to the east side of Wichita...The Warren Theatre, on east 13th/96 highway, is a great place to go to the movies!  Cheddar's is out in the parkinglot...I love that place!!!  And Wichita is a mecca for great Asian food...You can go about anywhere and get a great meal.  Ghengis Grill, corner of Rock/Douglas, is a fantastic Mongolian BBQ place...You'll have fun exploring!!  ;)

Whoa there Lisa, are you talking Peter's in Parsons ? I love that little Chinese cafe. Nothing fancy but the food is outstanding. Some kind of meat loaf in little squares I could founder on.
Peking Palace in Wichita was the best---before they tore it down. I made a pig of myself on the bacon wrapped water chestnuts. One day the waiter said,"oh,you likey dem ? " I think the log cabin I was building out of the tooth picks is what tipped him off

Was Peking Palace at Rock and Harry in an old Western Sizzlin or Sirloin Stockade building?  I loved that place.  Roberta's family, Angie and I went to eat there while Dad was in the hospital, and it was gone, just a giant track-hoe sitting there.

Don't do it Jarhead!  ;D  I can see the wheels turning, thinking of what you could do with that phrase.  8)

Yep! It's 3 blocks from our house. Their whole family works there, and Peter's 3 nephews are usually there too. I love those little cuties! They make what I call Chinese home cookin'. Peter was in NYC a while back and learned how to make some new types of sushi. Now I'm spoiled! And they have the BEST chicken wings EVER! My son loves those little bacon wrapped meatloaf thingies too.

Do they have those ginormous crystal chandeliers? All the China Buffets I've been to have them. And you're right, the food is usually really good. As a matter of fact, the first time I ever had frog legs was at a China Buffet! They were awesome!

Ehhh their food is ok.  Passable. The one i go to is the one on east central in wichita.  They are far far better than any other place ive been to, and the price is reasonable!  I think two people can eat for around 15 bucks on a week day and weekends it usually is 20 bucks but they add a whole lot of extras on weekends.

You get a ton of seafood, chicken, sushi bar is by far the best i've ever seen, Mongolan food as well as many other types.  Their Hot and sour soup is to die for.  Lots to choose from from squid to eel i think.  I've so far tried everything they have served, and some i don't like, not that it isn't prepared right, just don't like it.  But 90% of it i do like.

I think the name is Asian town buffet, not sure.  Uhm i go there when i go to the doctors down the road.  Across the street i believe there is a asian market too.

The addy is 6160 East Central, wichita betwen woodlawn and edgemoor.

BTW i am very very particular on my chinese food. it has to be hot and fresh and good.   THe Asian buffet doesn't put a lot of food up at one time, they keep it low inventory out there and just cook based on consumption rate. They are very good at keeping it fresh and hot.

We're like that too. I hate seeing stuff on a buffet that has been sitting there for too long. It's all dried out and YUCK!
Our Chinese place here will go and make us fresh chicken wings and make sure there is plenty of sushi out when they see us coming through the door. Like I said, we're spoiled!

Well quite frankly this restaurant I go to so far you don't ahve to do that.  You go in, get your seat and you dont' even sit down, you just place your drink order and go for the gold.  Its hot fresh and tasty.  BUT i have to say i haven't ever been there past 1 pm.  I always am there around 11 -12.  SO i don't know how it is in the afternoon.

BTW if you like regular country cookin, you can go further down central to west central and eat at hometown buffet.  17.76 for 2 adults weekdays and slightly more on weekends. but you get Fried chicken, kielbasa and kraut, mac n cheese, greenbeans all kinds of dishs.  Its good food.  But very salty lol.

When I go to visit my Bud in Wichita, I like to eat at Buffet City. Good chinese food with a Mongolian grill. It is in the center at Central and West street. And Steve, my Mama dure did love to go to Home Town Buffet. She thought that Ted was just 'it' cause he would take her there regularly.

Going back to the original question . . . there's also the movie theater in Sedan. We went several times when all the kids were home. It's an experience!  :D ;)

I do like the theater in Independence; first run movies, reasonable price. Been a while though.  :'( My very favorite place to see a movie is right here in my own living room!

It is also much much cheaper. And when I must move due to my restless leg syndrom or the fact the seats don't fit this arthritic body..................and I need to drink to add to my salava (not enough to wet a whistle) and then of course, let it out. Unless it is something I really want to see................will watch it from home...........Any chinese I like...........my daughter and I ate at a nice Chinese buffet (no don't know name) when I was in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.......yummy.

Speaking of restless leg syndrome, I am about to squirm out of my chair just to get through the forum tonight.  I am more than ready to go back to the recliner and watch the rest of Harry Potter.  Good night for now.

I saw that one in Sedan. It looked cool, our movie theater looked like that back in the day. But it only shows one movie at a time, right?

Netflix is WONDERFUL! Especially if you watch a lot of movies. I don't go out much if it is too hot or too cold (the Fibromyalgia broke my internal themometer) and being able to just veg and watch a movie is a Godsend to me. I also love TCM.

Since the thread was 'where do you all go to see a movie'....I personall tend to stay away from the big screen, 'new and improved Cinemax' which depicts vulgar language, sexual enuendos, violence and 'all about me' types of flicks that kids seems to like nowadays.
Instead of the lost days of the Howard Theatre, there is Independence movies, and a drive-in I think within 1 hour north east?
Otherwise, I watch DVD's of my choice and Hulu on the computer.
I can eat popcorn. pause and go pee, then resume and if I fall asleep, can watch again.

I am afraid the genre of classic movies are fading into the sunset like.... (insert favorite western).

Welcome to Howard, no man's land afar from the basic city life...and we like it like that.
ready (and I don't live in Howard, however in this area)

What a description of a place I lived in for a long period of time... :o...And the bathroom report might have been a TMI moment... :o...

Anyway, Lisa...You have many options in the surrounding areas, whether you choose to brave the theatre down in Sedan (shows first run movies, with the local entertainment being provided-local kids running up and down the aisles with little supervision, unless things have changed considerably since I was there 5 years ago...) or go to Independence (the theatre is nice but the concessions are high priced) or go down to B-ville (average on both the theatre and the concession prices) or go to Wichita (a bit pricey on both the ticket price and the concessions, both).  It just depends upon what it is you are looking for and how long it is you are willing to drive to get there.  I used to combine a matinee movie in the afternoon with going out to eat and doing grocery shopping (these were pre-Julie days) in the evening...Made for a fun day.  ;)

El Dorado just re-opened the Star Vu Drive In. We had one in Parsons when I was growing up, but it closed in the mid 80's. I watch a lot of movies on my computer via Netflix. It comes in real handy if I am having trouble sleeping.

Thanks for the welcome! Lisa

It was mentioned here about the good old days when the Howard theatre existed. It was mentioned about how sexual situations etc were more prevalent now. One of the funniest stories in my family is when Babe let me and my little brother into the Howard movie theatre to see Lolly Madona and Slaughterhouse Five. My mom couldn't believe it because Babe would not have let her in to the same movie in her day.

Lisa, if I'm not mistaken, the Towne East mall in Wichita (at Rock and Kellogg) has a theater, but more importantly, there is a wonderful Chinese restaurant just to its west called Asian Super Buffet. I know they serve sushi, though I didn't try any. The restaurant is clean and attractive and the food is good quality. Plus, there's a Target across the street on Armour.

There also is a good buffet on East Harry near Hillside called Shanghai. Good food there too, and there's a Big Lots store close by. No movie theaters in that particular neighborhood, though.

When I go out to eat at a fine restaurant i.e. Red Lobster, Pete's Steak House, Burger King.... I always try and enjoy myself to no end.  Here's a few tips on what I do... use them if you want.  You will not believe the responses you'll get:

- - Strike up a conversation with the table next to you.  For instance, "Would you hold this messy wet kleenex for me?"... or... "Would you look at the size of the hair I just yanked out of my nose"

-- Play with your food; to add effect, act like it's a special performance for the people at the next table.

-- Turn around every thirty-seven seconds to the people at the next table and ask them if your seat is too close, if you're farting too loud, etc.

-- Whenever you see someone getting up and leaving, bolt to their table and take the tip before the wait-person returns.

-- Eat REALLY loud; make disgusting noises; slurp EVERY time you take a sip of your drink.

-- Constantly re-adjust the positions of absolutely EVERYTHING at your table; seats, silverware, dishes, the table itself; and make sure to make a big production out of it.

-- Order something on the menu, preferably something very specific, then when it comes, claim it's wrong and you ordered something simple.  Make a big production about the ineptitude of the help.

-- If shells are on the menu, order them and take them home.  Come in the next day and in a very loud voice say, "Those shells you sold me jammed up my butt hole!"  Then scream, "I want my money back!"

-- Whenever anyone leaves their seat at another table, put some particularly messy peice of food on their seat, like pork fat or spaghetti.

-- Poke the person next to you repeatedly with your fork.  If they try to retaliate, curl into a ball and start crying for your mother.

-- Tap your fingernails on the table top, ignoring any evil stares that come your way. (This works anywhere)

-- Hug yourself and rock backwards and forwards in your seat whilst muttering incoherantly.  This will not only completely embarrass those at your table, it is also extremely annoying.

-- Help yourself to other people's meals.  If they complain, pretend to stick your fingers down your throat and ask them if they'd like their food back
.

I hope these tips will be of some help to you connoisseurs of fine taste.

I went to the Asian restaurant i told ya about yesterday.  Absolutely delicious!  One way i tell if a restaurant is good eating. Look at theparking lot.  IF its full, its good eating.    I had to limit my intake of that fine food, my stomach wouldn't handle the hot n sour soup unfortunately.  But i managed to make up for it in shrimp. :D

We have a lot of oriental choices including French Viet Namese, real Thai and may others. Many of the Chinese places are very ordinary but a few are really special.
The Hong Kong King buffet is huge, has it all, very fresh and it's where the local Chinese eat. It's also on the Chinese bus tour circuit so when they are coming up from Washington or down from Philly or New York, they stop there. They seem to really enjoy it so it must be good. Last time we went I pigged out on just their seafood.  nigiris sushi, maki sushi, yukiwa maki sushi, mussels in bean sauce, cold salad mussels, mussels in spicy tomato sauce. 5 kinds of shrimp, tiny pickled octopus, baked fish, Clams in broth, Chinese "scallops"...good, but are really stamped round pieces of ray wings, crayfish, calamari several different ways and several crab dishes including crab rangoon, a crab casserole and more. I did also have some mushrooms in oyster sauce and some red pepper spicy green beans too. It's making me hungry all over again!

i love the mushrooms in that sauce.  One food i can't get here is hindu food.  I  Love it.  There was only 1 place back in atlanta that served up original cusine.    I used to frequent the russian market there.  The russian jews settled there and their delis with their sausages are like crack is to a addict.  I used to go in and get 5lbs of fresh slim jims and cheese sticks and eat those for lunch during the week.

oh and they made this turkey keilbasa that was out of this world!  2" diameter and about 2' long and man cook that up with some kraut, and your in heaven.
