Title: SCHOUTEN, Alfred E. "Fred" - b. March 22, 1906 - d. February 25, 2011

Alfred E. "Fred" Schouten of Piedmont died on Feb. 25, 2011 in El Dorado, Kansas at the age of 104. Fred was born on March 22, 1906 in Pratt, Kansas, the son of William Henry and Dora (Smith) Schouten.  

After his schooling Fred worked on the family farm. On June 11, 1926,  Fred was united in marriage to Lena Mae Newport in Garden City, Kansas. They then settled in Ravanna in Finney County, Kansas where they farmed for a year.  Fred then went to work for the Rock Island Railroad in the Yards.  He went back to Cimarron, Kansas where he teamed for the City.  Fred returned to farming from 1929 to 1933 near Engalls and Pierceville.  In the spring of 1933 they moved to Piedmont where they farmed and ranched.  Lena preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 1989.

He is survived by his children, Bill Schouten of Spring, Texas, Lee Schouten of Piedmont, Kansas,  Pauline Ferry of El Dorado, Kansas, and Louise Lassley of Andover, Kansas; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lena;  daughter, Barbara Dean; three brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Koup Family Funeral Home, 121 N. Oak Street,  Eureka, Kansas with Pastor Alan Hunter officiating. Interment will follow at Piedmont Cemetery in Piedmont. A memorial has been established with the Piedmont Community Association and may be left in care of the funeral home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045.

Sorry to learn of Fred's passing.  He was a nice gentleman and certainly lived a long life.  We extend our sympathy and prayers to the family.
